Sign Short Message Service

Sign Short Message Service (SSMS) is a communication and educational mobile application that is based on the sign language alphabet. It provides the ability to communicate through messages in both fingerspelling and plain text. While at the same time it is also an educational tool that can be used to learn a sign language alphabet.
The application currently includes 5 sign language alphabets. These are the American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), French Sign Language (LSF), Greek Sign Language (GSL) and South African Sign Language (SASL).

Despite the fact that there are various mobile service packages for Deaf people, these can still prove to be costly. SSMS main aim is to provide are more cost effective method of communication. SSMS makes use of graphical messages (hand shapes, signs) that are charged at normal SMS rates instead of MMS rates. The rates for sending an SSMS depend on the standard SMS rates of your cellular provider.

The application also aims to bridge the gap between Deaf and Hearing cultures. By allowing Deaf and Hard-of Hearing users to send and receive messages in their mother tongue, communicating can be more effective and pleasant. The translation feature allows hearing users to convert sign language messages into plain text.

Application Features:

• On-screen sign language alphabet keyboard.

• Receive and send messages in plain text and sign language.

• Translate sign language messages into plain text messages and vice versa.

• Message in Motion (MiM) to view sign language messages in motion. The speed of the motion can be set to improve viewing experience.

• Two different background themes. Based on research, the high-contrast black and yellow background theme should be more appealing to Deaf users. The second theme is a low-contrast grey background theme.

• Learning mode to view both sign language and plain text simultaneously in a message.

• Learn a sign language alphabet

• Set the size of the sign language and plain text characters

Please let us know if you find any bug in the application. We appreciate all the feedback that you have to offer and hope you enjoy the application.

I enjoy the app, because not many will send the sign in asl instead of letters. I agree qwerty style would help....also having the ability to see what I have sent would be great. There is an option in settings to stop the auto launch that ppl seem to have problems with.

I love, love, LOVE this app!!! I've been using it for a few months and (luckily) haven't experienced the problems others are having. Like others have said, a QWERTY board would improve it. Also when I'm reading (watching) a message, if I get another text it goes straight to that, even though I haven't finished reading the first one. Would be so much better if could carry on reading before the next one comes up. Thanks!!

Its wonderful and all but it would be great if the letters didnt show up in all caps in normal messenger. Other than that i love it. Ive always had a hard time following finger spelling and this helps alot

I appreciate the effort and I am sure that a new sign language student would appreciate the application, but it's just not my thing.

I just love this; it helps me but not when I have to remember every letter of the alphabet in order to spell word I don't know a sign for. Thanks so much for an app that really works. ;^)

I do like this idea but I don't like that when I get text message it interrupts every single thing I am doing! It is making apps I am using freeze up and stop every time I receive a text message. Just had to uninstall because of the interruptions.

It's good but when I send someone a text through sign language it just shows up as capital letters

I live this app, but I have a few issues with it. First of all, it is it a QWERTY keyboard. Second, you cannot use it as a keyboard to use anywhere else, like regular keyboard. I would like to use it in Snapchat, Instagram and Kik. Unfortunately I cannot. All in all a good app though.

I like the app overall. I don't like that it pops up whenever I get a text but I'll deal with it for now. Also, if the keyboard could be set up like standard qwerty that'd be excellent.

Hopefully you can upgrade it to use actual signs instead of just finger-spelling, but great work thus far!

Too bad it shows the letters. Wish only the hands for REAL asl practice!

Can you type ASL alphabet to a person in a text message? I tried to text a hearing person in ASL and it was sent in English. Hard to use app. How it works is hard to understand.

App crashes upon opening. Doesn't fully load.

Ali. F. Jul 15, 2015

This is an really good app but if the qwerty keyboard was available, that would be excellent! Also, if the letters were emoji's. Will these things possible in the future??
