This product is by far the best I have used, and is so close to being perfect. But there is one major flaw that makes it impossible for me to use. It seems the app likes to auto-capitalize the first letter typed. I haven't tested software keyboards but with a USB keyboard there is no way to not send a capital letter. This normally wouldn't be an issue, but in the case of typing a password to access my Cisco switch that now becomes impossible.
We are using this app to update control boards in the field. We have solar battery operated streetlights and we are excited to be able to use this app to talk to our poles. We are even more excited that we were able to buy a cheap tablet to have our maintenance crew use. The tablet may be cheap, but it works and it does everything we need it to do. Confirmed App works on Noria T2 7" Tablet by Chromo Inc. On a side note: The only complaint I have about the app is that it skips certain lines and we aren't able to edit that particular line. This happens with my Samsung Tablet, Lenovo Tablet, and the Noria tablet. Thank you for your contribution.
I tested it with my Arduino UNO and it works, but only to send data. 3 stars: pros: Good looking UI Lots of settings Very flexible Works with Arduino Cons: -It is not receiving most (around 95%) of the messages sent by the arduino. I made an Echo test to try this... Still useful but not perfect.
Very nice but I have the same issue as Matthew Miller in that the bluetooth keyboard interferes with the operation of the USB serial port connected to my OTG adapter. I saw this with another app also, so I suspect that there is something buggy in the underlying API in use that causes the issue to surface (both are technically serial devices), so may not be a lot the author can do. FYI: Samsung SM-T700 with a Samsung EJ-CT700 Bluetooth keyboard running stock Samsung Android 5.0. Seems to work without it but the keyboard popup scrolls the text on the screen away, making it hard to use.
works great on Nexus 7 to console Cisco devices! my only problem is that the dictionary input is always getting in the way. Just hope that the input is in real time so that when i press "space bar" the view will automatically scroll. Or maybe i just missed that option on the app. But still works great!
I'm amazed at how easy it was to connect to serial devices using this app! Setting up a USB-serial connection from a laptop is usually a painstaking ordeal (getting drivers to install, finding port numbers, etc)... This app worked first try, right out of the box!
Downloaded the free version to see if it would work on our network equipment at work which is all Cisco. Borrowed an USB to Serial adapter from my friend that he hadnt used for a while and connected to a Cisco 3524 switch with my Transformer Prime and worked great. Wanted to see if the App would pick the POST config on the switch to see if there were any bad ports etc. Behold it processed feedback on the app AWESOME!!! So to take another step further i tried to actually apply a configuration using the basic commands and the app responded well for a free version. I recommended this app to my senior technician and all my co workers in need. Great Job Slick Devs.
I also experienced the same issue as Chris on my Toshiba Thrive. In addition to no echo reply, most of the data returned from a Cisco router at 9600 is not displayed.
I was able to connect my Nexus 7 (2013) to my Arduino Uno with an OTG cable and communicate over the serial bus. Stock Android, no root required! I had to use the "Prolific" mode, not "FTDI" for some reason. Even at 9600 baud I seemed to be dropping a few characters every now and then, but it's certainly start!
I would prefer a simple terminal emulator, something like connectbot for serial connections. For example it is not interactive - you have to type out a command at the app command line and hit enter so when I am on a cisco device I cannot use tab completion or ? or the up arrow to repeat a command. The behavior is still bad even though I selected "send data every keystroke." I expected something that would just let me type and work and not try to manage me. It seems to be the only thing out there so I guess I'm stuck with it until something better comes along. I read all the rave reviews from people using this on their network devices and cannot believe they find this acceptable.
Currently writing this review while connected to a Riverbed Steelhead device and my Transformer Prime. Quite simple and literally plug and play. Using a Trendnet TU-S9 USB to Serial adapter.
Confirmed works with galaxy nexus and prolific usb to serial cable with Juniper network equipment as well as the Texas Instruments Stellaris boards (115k baud and prolific driver).
Takes a few minutes to recognise the USB serial cable, but once it does it works well. Was able to load a config file onto a Cisco router using this app.
Will not work with Samsung S4. I can connect with prolific but only get The hour prompt. Trying to connect to cisco device. Using same cables I can connect by way of pc and putty. I tried a Google nexus 7 and Motorola Droid Maxx HD and the devices can't even see the adapter unlike the Samsung s4. Any ideas. This would be a 4+ if it worked.
I have just tried out this little app and it works great with the Asus TF101 running Android 4 ICS.
Works fine on a Nexus 5 phone, input field somewhat cramped but only to be expected on a phone! Still, gives enough emergency access to a switch that needs a very quick fix when you haven't got a laptop!
Working in marine electronics this is a real useful tool to read NMEA 183 and other marine equipment. Another nail in the MS coffin! Asus EEE Transformer Prime.
Bought a generic OTG cable. Connected it>usb-serial adapter>cisco console cable>c3560, c3750, c3750x and 3850. It also works with OTG cable>usb to macro usb for newer cisco switchs.
Shows connected with Prolific (Belkin USB Serial) but does not return any text from the serial device. Any suggestions? would love to get this to work on my droid maxx 4.0.4.
Reports that no usb adapter is connected
Not a proper serial terminal emulation. However it is the best of a bad bunch on the android market. So much so that I may even take up the SDK myself and start programming...
Plugged into a GPS chip receiving GSA sentences and after several minutes the application grinds to a hault with 22MB (!!!) RAM usage. Consider culling some of the text output after a while.
Works fine when using soft-keyboard (but then I have no D-pad to use arrows) but then breaks and can't find the adapter when I connect a bluetooth keyboard.
This app is extremely useful for any admins out there. I was able to console into devices very well!
I'm running ICS 4.0.4 official firmware on galaxy tab 10.1 GT-P7500. Tested it with Cisco devices and its working great.
I send some mail to developer company different times in 2 weeks there is no response.
Does its job. Works fine for connecting into servers. NetApp, Cisco, IBM, etc
Works okay with the original Nexus 7 but not with the new. Entering byte codes is clunky. If the keyboard is open it limits your ability to scroll up, this prevents you from reaching upper byte code buttons. So you close the keyboard and them poke at the entry to get the keyboard back. As I said clunky.
