Smartify

SMARTIFY is your personal digital curator. It is a mobile app that allows users to scan artworks and gain access to rich commentary left by friends, curators and the artists themselves. It transforms museums and galleries into a place for dialogue and shared experiences.
Ever been to a museum and struggled for more information about the artwork? Had to forfeit your retina display and Hi-Fi noise cancelling headphones in favour of a second-hand audio guide and a pre-selected tour? SMARTIFY’s team of art lovers/tech nerds are launching a new app that empowers visitors to follow their own preferences, allowing museum-goers to scan any artwork and get access to inspiring audio and video commentary.

***How it works***Just point your device with SMARTIFY running at an artwork; you will be presented with museum commentary and access to new voices, curators or friends. No more squeezing through crowds to read that little label. All the information you need is at your fingertips. You saw an artwork that you liked? Simple; save your favourite art by the press of a button and start building your own personal collection.

If you love art, then you will love this app. An A-Z of information about individual artists, 1000's of art images, video tours around some of the world's most famous museums, and access to the online shop are amongst a few of the features available. The app has worked absolutely fine for me, with no glitches so from my personal experience, i would highly recommend.

Fab! Love all the easily digestible tours and intros to art. Would definitely recommend for the art enthusiast, or even budding student. Not sure where the downloads go though! 🤔

Quite like it, but frustrating that even while playing videos the screen goes goes off even when sound is still continues. Surely smartify should "know" to tell my phone that it is still operational and the screen is required to stay ON while it is tramsitting a video! This seems like a major flaw!

It can NOT identify works of art unless they already exist in its data base, which is limited at best......lol.....use for entertainment as this app has no FUNCTIONAL use in any other capacity.

Was told about this app when visiting the famous Bowes Museum in County Durham today and immediately downloaded it and tried it out. It's brilliant. Worked perfectly (after It's scanned you have to swipe down and left to get the info about that picture). I'm amazed at all the poor reviews but this seems mainly because of wrong expectations. It's intended to work as an info guide for the paintings in that particular museum/gallery. It tells you loads about each painting, including pictures of other paintings by the same artist in that particular gallery. Suddenly going to an art gallery got really interesting for me! Please rate it for what it sets out to do, not what you'd thought it might do.

Nice app if you're interested in art and artists. I was really disappointed however because it will only try to identify artworks that you take a picture of thru the app and not of any you have saved. Tried it on a painting of ours but all it did was say "scanning" but nothing else. There are NO instructions about how to use the scanning feature. Tried scanning our Renoir and Van Gogh prints without success.

Disappointed. I was hoping to recommend it to my students for art history, so I thought I'd test it. I don't think the app is ready for use because it doesn't have data on a wide range of subjects. Sadly the app is yet to add a huge spectrum of artworks outside the Phenomenon of Western art. I tried to scan images from books and prints to test it and the app couldn't find matches. The idea of scanning artworks only at museums with actual specimens is very surfacial and caters to consumers who are probably techies or techno-geeks who want another feature on their gadgets. If at all it does help, then it probably focuses on users in the Europe and the US where most of the artworks featured on the app are housed. Scanning an artwork at a museum hardly helps because most of the artworks at a museum would have a clear identity at a museum and one can easily find data about those on the net. Will not be recommending the app until it doesn't improve and expand its content. Once achieved the would enable the app to become a crucial source for studying art.

Fantastic app - like attending a gallery from your armchair. Now allows you to do a text search to find what you are interested in. Good quality representations of beautiful art. It would be even better if you could look at a gallery or artist's collection in slide show mode or by simply swiping sideways, rather than having to go in and out of each picture from the thumbnail overview. Currently swiping left brings up artist info. Also an optional home screen other than scanner, for 5 stars.

I downloaded it looking to find a painting. I tried scanning it but it would take ours so I closed and reopened the app. When I tried using the scanner again tho it was lagging so hard it became annoying so I closed and reopened it to find oud it wouldn't work at all, just show me a full black screen saying it was scanning lol. Anyway overall the layout was pretty, it had some interesting/famous painting in display for easy access to 'the popular ones'

informative and interesting. Gives an overview of pieces from around the world.

This app is quite limited in its ability to recognize artwork. Seems to only recognize famous museum pieces, and not much else. Those it does, happens in just seconds so no need to hold your phone for any length of time, it won't help. Very disappointed in this app. Don't bother if you're trying to identify a painting.

I recently changed my Echo Show wallpaper to fine art. The Echo's range is extraordinary - it's an almost 5-star experience - with one glaring exception: it doesn't tell you who painted what you're looking at. So the loveliest paintings flicking through my wallpaper rotation went undocumented until this wonderful thing happened: SMARTIFY! It doesn't recognize everything, even some pieces that are quite old, but they're building their database. In the meantime, when it works, it works a dream!

No instructions as well as the scanner gets stuck scanning.

Used the app for the Ray Harryhausen Exhibition at Edinburgh's Modern Two gallery. It did not disappoint and provided a great deal of information to compliment the exhibits. The audio could do with a wee tweak as John Landis' introduction was barely audible. Scanning was quick and easy with tons of info on hand. I'll definitely be using the app again when I visit another exhibition

I don't likd leaving negative reviews as someone has invested time and effort in developing the app. That said, it is a bit poor, shuts down randomly and really is not much use at present. Android diagnoses a bug and suggests clearing the application's cache. Did that but no real improvement. A shame as I had hoped to use it in a few exhibitions over the coming weekend.

Only found audio description on one painting. Couldn't scan some paintings App keeps crashing.

I originally installed this app when visiting an art gallery where Smartify was able to provide information on pictures, by pointing the smartphone's camera at them. However, at home, I discovered that Smartify features information on nearly all nearby galleries, as well as providing a wealth of knowledge about significant artists and a vast number of beautiful photographs, with (translatable) captions of their works, obtained from the electronic resources of the major galleries.

I've downloaded Smartify a few times but whenever I try using it all other apps on stop working and the phone crashes. Too heavy for phones that are either old or not top of the range. A shame.

Clc. M. Oct 9, 2020

Download was simple So far nothing I've scanned has been found to identify And I've scanned some well known images I gave the app a two because if the no result scans The rest of the app is great and I hope the more I scan the more in the apps library of images . I'm going to stick with this app as I like the concept and it's easy to use And I cant seem to find my library of scanned items.

Ged. K. Jul 30, 2021

Amazing project. I didn't give you a 5-star just because there should be a way to scan it through images stored on your phone, too. When your app will come out with this resource, surely I'll come back here and you will have gained the missing star from me plus lots of recommendations to lots of art enthusiasts I know and talk frequently.

What an impressive collection of historical, recognition and celebration of unique perspectives of the most brilliant artists throughout history from all over our world. To be able to open your eyes and hear as, they tell stories of our history in such a beautiful silence. Masterpieces of sculptures, sketches and paintings from different cultures, countries, and creed documenting the details without cameras taking pictuso that those in the future, could travel through time.

Ste. H. Sep 26, 2020

Terrible, terrible, terrible. Scanning function isnt a function at all because it simply doesnt work. And why cant a picture suffice. Why must I laboriously hold my phone rock steady for a long time to manually scan a painting. Cant the program scan a photo taken by a phone camera? Not to mention there are no instructions whatsoever to guide you so for the first thirty minutes youre scratching your head wondering if its you that's the problem then the next 30 realizing what a sham it really is.Junk

Only been using this a few days but so far it seems excellent as regards information and astonishingly quick at finding paintings. I like the way it links up to, for example, the National Gallery site.

Yvo. K. Feb 20, 2020

Very disappointed. I downloaded the app as it was supposedly the best way to recognise paintings. Unfortunately it did not recognise one. Any google image upload renders 100 times more accuracy. Waste of time if you want to reverse search a painting.

Rup. H. Jul 27, 2021

Very good art recognition software, it's fast and intuitive. Unfortunately, the less famous paintings don't tend to have any information associated with them. perhaps linking them to a generic wiki type of info (if such info exists) would be a nice touch where tailored info isn't available.

It's a great way to take note of some great pieces of art you may want to learn about later...just point, scan and info comes up...a bit limited at times, but great nonetheless.
