SMS Backup +

Automatically backup SMS, MMS and call log entries using a separate label in Gmail / Google Calendar. It is also possible to restore SMS and call log entries back to the phone (MMS not supported yet).
Remember to enable IMAP in Gmail.

Please note that auto backup might not work reliably when SMS Backup+ is installed on the SD card. Future version will hopefully fix this, in the meantime please move it back to phone memory if possible.

For those of you worried about app permissions: there is a detailed explanation in the FAQ section of the website.

Also, please consult the FAQ on the website before sending me an email.

I got a pop-up message the other day but clicked too fast and didn't absorb what it said. So I didn't do whatever it suggested. The message hasn't shown again. Now my backup is spotty... some messages being backed up, others not when I click on Manual backup. So frustrating!! Oh heck, I just noticed that SOME incoming messages are being saved BUT NONE OF MY OUTGOING MESSAGES SINCE THE END OF JANUARY!!! I've uninstalled and reinstalled through app TWICE, carefully following the instructions.

I've been using this app since my Note 5 (a looong time) and generally it works as intended. I've been able to continue backing up to Gmail mostly without issues. Occasionally it will backup weird and doesn't keep messages properly organized (mainly happens with MMS). Lately, the app has been repeatedly flagged by device manager as using high battery and is one of my top battery users. Don't know if this is a bug, but the only way my phone doesn't freak out is if I put the app into deep sleep.

I came for this, when I noticed a mail folder Call Log - SMS Backup+. I'd love this 2 be perfect solution 4 backups of call log & messages, being FOSS; would've given only ⭐⭐ otherwise. Why so low, if it works as said? AFAIK the issue isn't that it won't do what it says. It's what it says: It backs up SMS messages, but not MMS! Kind of odd thing to be lacking; Still! The backups were from 2014, there must be easy way to implement this today, many alternatives likely do! Keep on trucking!

Like many other of the recent reviewers, I loved this app and swore by it for years. It would reliably backup messages a few minutes after I got them (which can be configured) added them all to my Gmail under a configurable folder name, and never failed - until recently. The auto backup feature doesn't seem to work reliably anymore, even after a full reinstall. It stops randomly, and hasn't been updated in over a year. If your OS is older, will probably work great. Otherwise, need a new app :(

This WAS a really good app for backing up sms & mms. But since the beginning of the month (August) it doesn't work. All I get is an error message saying to enable Imaps which, when I check, already has a tick to show it is enabled. I think, as the last update was well over a year ago, and google has changed it's policies recently, this app is due a new update. Otherwise, I shall have to remove this app and use a different one - one that IS maintained and updated!

I've used this app for YEARS on multiple Galaxy phones (an s3, s6, and s7) but recently it doesn't automatically updated despite being set to do so. I have to remember to go in and update manually. Bummer. If you're out there, Jan, it sounds like the app needs updating. I don't mind paying for a great app that works as well as this one does (and I can't remember if I have paid in the past before) but reading other comments it sounds like it's not being supported anymore. Hoping this changes and sending my appreciation for my past appreciation of how this app has saved me in the past!

The battery in my phone was not working properly, so looking for SMS backup apps, I saw that this one was highly rated. When I restored the messages on my phone, it only restored about 2 month's worth, even though I set up the backup and restore for "all". Disappointing. I ended up using a backup and restore app to get the majority of my messages, although it didn't even do 100%.

a very useful app. been using it since the days of android 1.6. The automatic thing doesn't seem to work any more, but manual backups still work fine. I recently received an email from Google saying that they are blocking access to my gmail account for this app on 15th July 2019 unless it gets updated to comply with recent changes at Google... whatever that means. Hope this happens as this is far too useful a facility to lose... I've not found anything else that does quite what this does.

Good for SMS and call logs. Needed to transfer things from my old to my new phone, transferred both well. Two major problems: Doesn't restore MMS, not even an option to restore it. Also gave me some duplicate messages when I restored the SMS messages which is annoying. Because of those reasons I needed to download a different app that works better. Overall, a decent app.

I've been using it for 5 years on 3 different Samsung phones. It backs up In and Out cell calls, SMS, and MMS. The restore to a new phone is a pleasure to watch. Occasionally I find that a little trouble shooting is required. Today I needed to remove the app from deep sleep power reduction list and I think I had to adjust an IMAP setting one time, but day to day backup is flawless. You can see the back ups on a browser looking at your gmail, but I prefer an email client. I use Thunderbird as my POP and IMAP client for about 10 different emails and one of them is my gmail that has all my phone communications nicely backed up and sorted. The app does a reasonable job at configuring IMAP settings, but if you are very uncomfortable with making IMAP adjustments or are not sure what IMAP is, you will be frustrated if something goes wrong.

Because of this app, I have years and years of saved texts in a Gmail folder. Many of those texts are from 2 people I love dearly who are no longer alive. I love this app. my only issue is that at some point over the years, it started having issues with automatically backing up my texts. For a while now, I've had to manually back up texts. I wish they'd find the problem and fix it.

Changing my rating. This app no longer works, but not because of the developer. This was by far the best backup app I've ever had, and I agree with other reviewers - this absolutely should be part of the operating system. Automatically backing up my SMS and MMS to my Gmail was a brilliant idea. It was the easiest way for me to go back and look at messages I'd had with someone in the past, retrieve pics I maybe forgot to back up, etc. No other backup app I find that even comes close to this one

Nice idea! I like that it goes to G-Mail and has it's own labels. I also like that you can put labels on certain people and just back up that person or group. This app has potential! The big thing for me is that it only does 1 way conversations except if a photo was included in the text. My text was available, but not the responses. I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, but I failed.

I just want to echo what others have said. The Firefox workaround for the recent connection issue works 100%. It is quick and easy. BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! I run two phones, a note 5 and a note 8. I use this app on both and have it set to backup to separate folders in my Gmail. CHECK THIS OUT: After I did the Firefox fix on my 5 first and got ready to do it on my 8, I discovered that the problem had fixed itself automatically, I assume just by me installing Firefox there. I'm impressed.

But for the authentication issue I would give this 5 stars. It's hard to knock an app that has been invaluable to me for years, did exactly what it says it would and is available for "free". I too have not been able to backup since August 2019, until today. I was reading some of the reviews and fortunately stumbled upon the Edge workaround. So I now have 4,406 messages left to backup from what started as 9,417. The backup fails after a few hundred so be prepared to babysit the app (i.e. don't think that it will work continuously once you finally get it going). I wish it didn't take me so long to find the workaround but I am certainly happy I did not give up trying.

August 7. I tried a manual backup but get an error message: XOAuthorzation fail. I went to the app and turned off the connection button. After acknowledging that I would have to reauthorize the app I clicked in the affirm. Then I clicked the same button to reconnect to my Google account. When it gave error, an option came up to connect and verify by browser. When I did this action the program works flawlessly. There is nothing wrong with the app. It is Google reverifying the connection.

I have an LG G6 phone. I've been using this app for several months without any issues, but the texts from one contact (my mom) stopped backing up over 2 weeks ago. I keep trying to manually back up and it just won't recognize her anymore. All my texts need to backup for legal purposes. I've emailed Jan twice pleading for help with no response. Will have to switch to a better performing app. Such a hassle.

This used to be a great app. Silently backing up my sms on a regular basis. After a recent change in Google's security policy the app seems to be unable to connect to the email severs. I had received a notification from Google that this may be happening in a few weeks, so I assumed the app would be fixed in time. It's unfortunate because until now the app was a good solution for backing up my sms.

When this app broke I looked for an alternative but I couldn't find anything that simply does what it's supposed to do: backup SMS to my gmail account. It makes it so easy to find old messages, and half the time I can't remember if it was an email or text anyway. The issue with connecting can be easily remedied through the IMAP settings as described on AndroidPolice. Find their workaround on the page "SMS Backup+ is now broken due to Gmail's API changes, but there's a workaround". So happy it's back!

I have had many phones. A few were alcatel, some were htc(before they stopped retail in the US) and I have my first Samsung now. Each had this backup. Very easy to use. I do not care about backing up pics or apps like other SMS backups can do. At one point I did see a backup that one can choose what SMS to back up. All I had to do was check it. I think that would be useful with this one because I get messages from doctors, etc. reminding me of appointments and other things that I do not want backed up. Good app, but we should be able to choose what SMS to backup.

Great app; I've used it for years. it stopped connecting to GMail around the beginning of Aug. 2019. I fixed it per Phil Mitchell's 9 Aug. 2019 review - I had to use Firefox; his fixed didn't work in Chrome. When you reconnect you'll be given the choice of backing up all messages on your device (most of which had already been previously backed up in my case) or skip backing up them. I chose the latter to prevent duplication of the older messages and lost backups during the disconnected period.

I wish users would stop blaming the app developer for it no longer working. I do believe the developer should work to get the authentication fixed, however IMAP works just fine for the time. Its super simple to set up too, all you need is the imap server, your username and password. I'm only knocking a star because while this workaround works, this really needs to be changed for convenience sake. This is the best non-root backup method on the market, and I would love to see it flourish once more! IF google won't cooperate, then possibly look into another backup option, like dropbox, or a file transfer or something of the sorts.

Soh. H. Feb 22, 2019

For some reason the backup cancels by itself. I have added the app in the list of "don't close for battery optimization'. It doesn't close, but it cancels the backup operation after about 10% into it. I have 11000+ sms/mms messages, the max it has reached is around 6000 before it cancelled itself. Its a shame because otherwise the application looks very promising. If someone from the development team could shed some light on it, I can give it another try, but until then 1 star.

I've been using this app since 2012. I've never had issues with it and has always backed up texts reliably. Yes, there are many permissions, but I've trusted this app for a long time and the only permission I cant reason is the Google Pay billing, but I dont use it. It's easy to set up and all your conversations are saved into you gmail.

So like everyone else, it stopped working. However, if you search for "Android Police SMS Backup+", they have a great work around that will enable you to use it again! I tried other SMS Backup apps, but they are not the same or as good! This app is significantly better (in my opinion). There are 14 simple steps that allow it to work as it did before Google broke it. Just follow the steps (very simple how-to) and you will be backing up your 4,000+ text messages that are backlogged from August! (Edit: I had to add the address for Gmail in the server like it suggested that some people have had to.)

One Sided Conversation I've used this app for years with no problems and loved it. Now all I have is problems! Once I upgraded my phones to Samsung Galaxy 8+ and now 10 it doesn't work like it used to. I read their instructions and followed them and I still only get incoming texts from my contacts that are in my gmail emails. My outgoing texts do not show up in my gmail emails. Very, very disappointed! I won't recommend. I need to find a new app, because this one isn't working like it used to.
