SMS Sent Time

Background infos on this app: http://goo.gl/7jW8rz
#####IMPORTANT for Android 4.4 (KitKat):

On Android 4.4 apps cannot write the system SMS database anymore. This is a major change by Google. To re-enable this again you need to go to Android's hidden settings page "App Ops" and enable the permission "Write SMS/MMS" for this app. (You can open this hiden settings page easily with Apps like "App ops Starter"). #####

However, this method does not work on every phone, on some models "App Ops" settings only exist until Android 4.4.1. If so
- then there is no way to use my app anymore on Android 4.4.2. Sorry. :-(

Adds the time when an SMS was ACTUALLY SENT to your messages (only useful for devices which just show the receive time of SMS, eg. Galaxy S).

-------IMPORTANT NOTE FOR USERS OF "Handcent SMS" (version 4.0.0 or greater):Please check the following option in the settings of Handcent SMS (otherwise this app won't work): In menu under "Settings"->"Application settings"->Default Messaging application" and make sure that it is set to "Disable"!Otherwise Handcent SMS wil block any other SMS app!

-------IMPORTANT NOTE FOR USERS OF "Go SMS":Do not disable stock's notifications from Go SMS ("Receive Settings"->"Disable other message notification") other wise Go SMS will block any other SMS app!-------

It appends the sent time to the message text (the original timestamp will be kept untouched). Should work with all SMS Apps (Handcent SMS, chompSMS, Go SMS, etc..). Depends on SMS implementation details and your provider, so maybe doesn't work everywhere. Some SMS apps also may be confused if another app appends something to the message text in background. So please leave a comment whether it's working with your device/provider/app or not. Thanks! :-)

DETAILS:--------------------Many Android devices only display the timestamp when a message was received (not sent). This is a problem when you receive messages while your phone is turned off (or has no network coverage). In this case you don't know when the message was really sent (as you only see the received time when you turn on the phone again).

Also allows to add the SMSC (sms service centre) number from where the message was sent (technical stuff for people who are interested).

ABOUT:--------------------Ad-free! Resource-efficient: does not run as a background service, only gets started by Android when a SMS is received.Another thing: I develop this only in my spare time, so please understand if it's not perfect (and give me feedback). :-)

TECHNICAL:--------------------Tested successfully with Austrian providers. Theoretically it may be possible that the added sent time may be incorrect (different tiomezone) if the SMS service centre of the sender is located in a different timezone.

EXPLANATION OF PERMISSIONS:------------------------------------------------
• "RECEIVE SMS": necessary for reading the sent time out of the received SMS data package from the mobile provider

• "EDIT SMS OR MMS": necessary for adding the sent time to the message in the device's SMS database

• "READ SMS OR MMS": necessary for looking up the message to edit in the sms database

• "MODIFY/DELETE SD CARD CONTENTS": necessary for writing logfile to SD (when logging is enabled)

Have fun while texting! :-)

Doesn't work on Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime.

Thank you so much for this work around. Ever since I switched to android in 2011 this has bothered me. I am more frustrated that the android devs don't seem to see this even as a problem. However, this app still works, but needs a rooted phone and app ops, where you set write permission for SMS/MMS. Unfortunately it resets itself from time to time :-(

I had this on my Samsung Galaxy S3 and it was great I loved being able to see what time people had sent a text. However I have just got a Samsung Galaxy S5 and I have downloaded the app onto this new phone but it doesn't work. I wondered if this is because my new phone is 4G and the old one was 3G. Has anyone any ideas.

Samsung S4. Poor reception at work. Often SMS won't download to my phone for hours after they were sent. Now I know when the SMS was sent and not received - the distinction can be important. The interface is very clean and easy to use. It's a pity it is no longer supported because I would have loved and option to add the time to the body text to SMS that I send. Apparently the source code is available - so if there are any developers out there interested in expanding the original.......

Works as advertised. However, I don't like having this information added to every message so I found another solution. Install GO SMS, settings, advanced, important tips, enable "stock SMS uninstalled?". Now freeze or uninstall stock messaging app to avoid duplicate messages. Now GO SMS will handle the message retrieval and you can see both sent and received times in message details. The stock messaging app deletes this info when receiving messages so as the developer says there is no way to get this info for messages already received.

W/rooted phone + "App Ops [root]" installed to grant SMS Sent Time write permission to SMS database. Don't know why the sent time of messages is not available without 3rd party work arounds. I recall it was in Message Details in earlier android versions.

This has solved a problem that's been bothering me since I got my sgs2 2 yrs ago. I'm now due an upgrade. With I had this sooner. It's great but this kind of thing shouldn't happen on a handset like this. Thanks again dev's

Stand by what I originally said but wish I had known that allowing the upgrade on my S4 would stop this app from working 😢 Gutted that I have lost this and nobody else has developed a similar app. (Originally said) Now and again there is no time stamp but its rare and I can cope with a tiny blip. Its 99% accurate... There has only been one occasion where the time was out by about 4hrs but the text had been sent from an area notorious for poor signal.

Works almost flawlessly on Nexus. Only gets 4 stars because the time stamp isn't always added to a message. So far this has only happened during the rare occasions when an sms is received in the first few seconds during the on-cycle after the phone has been turned off, so I'm happy! Great app ;-)

...it does not play nice with SMS Popup. I use SMS popup and have notifications disabled for the stock messaging app. When I press "close" on SMS popup it is supposed to clear the notification from the bar, however since installing SMS Sent Time Fix, the notification remains.

This works perfect for embedding the timestamp of the time a message was sent to my phone for everyday when I have my phone on airplane mode and I turn it on and don't know when my friends texted me because they used to all come in at the same time and say the time that I turned airplane mode off. Other apps only adjust manually by an offset of hours or minutes but this app really shows you when the text was sent. Works perfect with my HTC Amaze, ice cream sandwich version.

Johannes, you are my superman and 'Hero of the years' that you made such workaround! Thank you so much. Thank you for absolute freedom in settings, for detailed app description+background issues and freedom to play with source code (I'd like to start with another bug-fixing for 2 SIM's phone and broken headphones plug-in detection.... long list).

Worked perfectly on my Galaxy S2 and S4, helpful during flight mode and does exactly as described. Guessing it needs an update (which I've heard the developer no longer works on this app as he receives no income from it) as it doesn't work on my S6 or a friends' S5

A. G. u. Aug 2, 2012

I sometimes put my phone on airplane mode and afterwards when I get texts, its important for me to know when was the SMS actually sent. App works as advertised. I haven't gone through all the reviews. Is this possible to provide another option - "Embed sent time into SMS itself". Is that possible to add the "Sent time" into SMS itself so that other SMS apps can read that as well?

Win. S. P. Jan 27, 2016

It was driving me crazy not knowing the sent time of my texts and this little app solved the problem. It works brilliantly. Puts Google to shame for not implementing this themselves. Thanks so much Johannes, you're a legend! EDIT: A real shame this no longer works on Android 5 and above :(

This worked great until android updated a few weeks ago and now it doesn't work. Hope this gets updated very soon.

This app used to work well but the 3 UK mobile network has changed something so all received messages go through their message centre number. This causes the sent time to be always the same as the received time. The centre number on all received messages is also now all the same number. This app is now useless on the 3 network

Sorry to say doesn't work on Sammy s5 in UK on EE. Shame Edit. Downloaded app ops and got it working following the procedure mentioed under the what's new column.

Looks like it hasn't been updated since last year so won't work on newer phones

My greenify app kept hibernating this one so I thought there was a problem. As soon as I fixed it everything has been smooth. I'm loving it.

Works great !! PLEASE MAKE THE APP COMPATIBLE WITH AVIRA ANTI THEFT. Will the sms commands for avira anti theft work with the time stamp ? I hope it wont. So please exclude those sms'es from being time stamp'ed and filters may be added to exclude/include a particular contact. Just a Request and not to blame the developer. Great Work !!!

When my wife turned on her phone this morning she had a text saying see you tomorrow at 3.30. She could not tell if the message had been sent today or last night so she had contact the sender to find out. This app should prevent a similar problem in the future. We have both installed it on our Galaxy S3s and it seems to be working fine. This information should have been incorporated by Samsung rather than us having to download a separate app.

Randomly just stopped working altogether. I've switched SMS default apps and switched carriers (from Verizon to AT&T)and and it doesn't work with either.

This is awesome! Didn't work at first but went into menu using app opps starter and turned on to write messages and works now! To the person that developed this......thank you thank you thank you! Networks should do this anyway but you are a genius for this!! Big thumbs up! 😊 EDIT...Doesn't work 85% of the time now? Checked settings. Very disappointing because nothing else out there I can find that does this! 😔

Got a new phone (same kind) and it will no longer work. I have all my settings the exact same. I love this app, it's a huge annoyance not knowing when something was sent especially if the message is urgent and this app typically solves that problem. I just need it to work again

A. G. u. Oct 29, 2012

Wish it worked on texts received before install but i understand the possible impossibility of that. after it works great, no complaints

This is a great app, I hate it how google has made it harder for this to work. And thanks for the permission work around

Ayt. A. Aug 4, 2016

Unfortunately, i couldn't get needed info from this app. Mainly i needed it for technical issues, but after filling of needed info in settings i didn't see results. May be there is other way to get it. Please advice
