This first game might be disappointing for some people. You only go through like 5-10 areas, each with little to do. It's very short and not worth $8 on its own. However, it's worth it as a springboard for the other Sorcery games, which offer much more variation, planning and length and give you more complicated goals. Also, the game will introduce you to the fun spell, combat, inventory and rewind mechanics that expand the experience beyond a visual novel.
The 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books made into a game. I can't imagine how difficult and expensive this game was to create and maintain. Every action creates a different path to reach the end. The consequences of your actions carry on through the next 3 games in the series, and beyond - to replay sorcery 1-4 again with increased difficulty because of the choices you made the first time through...
A very good textual but visual RPG. However I was let down by the length of this game. It feels as if an entire world is waiting for me, but I haven't scratched the surface. They say V2, 3 and 4 are much longer, so I'll go and check number 2. In other words: the ge is immersive and fun enough to just head out and spend another €5,- for some interactive story reading RPG goodness.
Such a great concept and execution. The mechanics are pretty great, though I personally wish the spellbook was easier to navigate and the spellcasting ui a bit more concise. The only major turn-off, like others have said, is the length being short, but given the detail and breadth the game has, it is still possibly worth it (and a necessary get if you have Play Pass). I also wish you could maybe do some kind of character customization, or there were character stats you could reflect upon.
I just finished all 4 parts after a few weeks of playing. Yes, the games get very extensive even though you can finish this first part in around 3 hours. The other parts are way longer especially if you're a gamer like me that knows that it's about the journey, not the destination and you like to explore and read everything. I think that this is the best choose your own adventure rpg series that I've ever played even compared to any AAA big budget game. There are soooo many choices and endings!
Can't believe the price of this game compared to how much playtime there is. I played casually for 2 days and now it wants me to buy part 2! Unbelievable. Not even a full game with an ending, for £4.99. No real challenges either. It's not even half a game. Feel like I've been robbed. Such a shame as the graphics are really nice and fighting mechanic is interesting. The story is somewhat engaging but nothing incredible. Love the illustrations.
The game is very unique and a good time, but it ends quickly and abruptly, with no real resolution. At $4.99, I can't recommend this game due to this. It feels more like it should be a free demo, introducing the world and gameplay before paying for the rest of the game. It is definitely worth a try if you have Google Play Pass however. 2* at list price, 4* on Play Pass.
An incredibly short and not at all challenging journey. It's also not a complete experience without the other games in the series. With that said, it's an enjoyable adventure and worth experiencing at least once. The artwork is beautiful, the magic system is simple yet rewarding, and when you finish this one you'll probably want to jump right into the second game.
Brilliant. This takes me back to my childhood in the 80s, playing the original books. But actually, thanks to things like the 3D map, music, and the more tactical battle system (rather than just randomly rolling dice) this is better. I'm now in the middle of "Khare: Cityport of traps" which is even better!
Long ago, I picked up this book and read it many times over. Now, I remember those wonderful times and don't have to page endlessly through a book to enjoy them. A faithful, beautiful adaptation with an enjoyable combat system and a thoroughly useful interface. Superbly done.
This stupid thing tricked me into reading! It is kind of like a choose your own adventure interactive story, except you also have an extensive list of spells that you can use to smooth out your path. It's also a bit like a one player board game mixed with an adventure/puzzle game. Whatever you call it, I love it
Perfect mobile adaptation of the classic Gamebooks from Steve Jackson (for the uninformed). I used to read tons of Gamebooks as teenagers. Sorcery and Lone Wolf from Joe Dever was my favourite series. The Inkle adaptation of Sorcery is absolutely brilliant, kudos to the team! The first volume is a bit short and easy, just like the book. Disclaimer: you have to read 😉
Ok so here's the thing: this app is good, but when we weigh in the price along with its quality, it renders the game fun experience almost obsolete. I get it, you laboured hours and pored over the computers months on end. And I know, this game can be played, technically more than one time in order to explore the different possibilities and plots you might have missed. But, this sort of branching descision-making games are enjoyable to a certain amount when played for first time, after it erodes
I will be leaving reviews on each of these games as I beat them. As of writing this, I am playing sorcery 3 for the first time. Anyway, I love this app. The world is great, the artwork is fantastic, it's very exciting to find out what could be around any corner. I was really not expecting this game or series to be this good. Although this game is not my favorite so far (it is very short and linear compared to others), still an amazing start. One of my new favorite app series.
First playthrough seemed short and bland. I rushed through to complete the game and survive. As I work through my 7th time, i learned how much the game has despite being the start and purposely bland and empty. Once you reach the second part, you will wish you took your time and got everything possible. Amazing story and interactive game. Not many story interactives are out there and this in depth.
Short experience (or maybe I rushed it). I honestly don't know. Sorcery! Is an introduction that gets your journey started. I don't recommend playing this if you don't plan on continuing on to Sorcery! 2. I found this game as a fun little playthrough to start gearing up for your adventure through Khare in Sorcery! 2. You can save character to cloud at the end and continue with your gear onto the next game.
Pros- Good artwork. Good writing. Cons- Bit boring, short and overpriced. No real threat of failure as you can rewind at any point. Bit misleading labelling them Sorcery 1, 2, 3 and 4 as they're 4 short chapters of the same game. Conclusion- Not terrible but at £20 for the full experience you get more for your money elsewhere. For example you could get Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 for the same price.
Literally the best game I've played on my phone, worth buying the whole series. The developers have put a lot of time and effort into the sorcery series & that is reflected by how well done the mechanics, art & story are in the game. (I can already tell I'm going to be craving more sorcery or something similar) 10/10 😊
So... Difficult this as it is extremely good; polished, fluid, clearly made with a lot of skill and care. But, unlike the superb 80 Days from the same studio, I'm not sure about replayability. I played it, enjoyed it, probably spent 90 minutes on it and I think I'm done. So it's fiver for 90 minutes of quality entertainment. If that's for you then dive in, if not then get 80 Days instead.
Graphics and gameplay aren't very impressive but the choices and how they affect what happens is very fun for me. I played this multiple times and got different goods each time! I very much look forward to playing them all.
Excellent story line. Hours of entertainment. Should I go this way or go that??? Characters are amazing. I really like sorcery 3 the beat so far. But this one you need to start with and its really good also!! Just sorcery 3 throws in a time element also that layers the story even more
The game itself harkens back to choose your own adventure D&D books of my youth. Though more advanced, and involved. The game is fun, however, the price tag got the content you get is very poor. I played all 4 titles for free with a Google Play pass trial, so I cannot complain, though giving if i had actually paid for this, I'd feel sorely cheated. Good game, bad price model.
This whole series is fantastic. The story is engrossing, and decisions you make have real and lasting impacts throughout. Plus the mechanics are varied enough so that it's not just a choose your own adventure game.
Reminded me of the choose your adventure books I read as a teenager. Felt trapped into keeping the sidekick who didn't help but probably stopped me from enjoying the story more. Don't see myself going through the story again, ok story but not the greatest IMO. I honestly doubt I would have paid for this if it wasn't part of the Google play arcade.
Choose your own adventure game with tons of choices. My playthrough was a bit short though, and although there are more choices I could rewind to do, I just don't feel like rerunning it, although I could. However, the second game fixes all this and practically makes you rerun it a few times for extra loot and lore. Start with this one, if you're hooked, play the next games. They build upon the same concept, with even better story mechanics.
