Spelling Bee (NY Times style)

NY Times publishes a daily word game called 'Spelling Bee' available for subscribers here: https://www.nytimes.com/puzzles/spelling-bee

You can play similar games here and as many in a day as you like. And it's free, and ad-free.

Please note that the developer is not responsible for the open-source reference dictionary (2of12inf from 12Dicts) used to create the app. However, if you do have suggestions for good open-source dictionaries that can be downloaded in plain text form, feel free to email the developer with your suggestions.

Also, thanks to contributions from https://github.com/rajkar86/flutter_spelling_bee/graphs/contributors for making the app better.

Great app - exactly what I was looking for - where you create words from available letters with the middle one as mandatory. Really challenging. What I would eventually add is: a hint section with information how many words there are starting with different letters and having different letters combinations; a word list locked on where I scrolled to after moving back to the game board, instead of always resetting to the top. Anyway, a great, relaxing experience.

Really addictive game with a well-done user interface. The ability to choose between a large and small dictionary is nice. Ad-free as well, which is lovely and unexpected. However, it would be nice if there was a tiered point system ala the NYT, as another reviewer mentioned. Additionally, sometimes the words accepted or not accepted seem arbitrary. That said, overall very good.

Solid game. Doesn't recognize some legitimate words, but I understand they are using a particular list. A wishlist would be some way to see how you are doing compared to others. (I'm far from the best, but it would be nice to see improvements in learning or use competition to retain interest.) Maybe a little more acknowledgement when you get a panagram and / or the ability to see past results / replay puzzles. But I'm enjoying playing and expanding my vocabulary / recalling rare words. Thanks!

When this first came out it was a reasonable and more flexible alternative to the NYTimes game (which has only 1 puzzle per day). Unfortunately, the game must have switched dictionaries, as it now includes an outrageous number of words to find, many of which are not part of the English language. It now is not only impossible to attain all of the words, but it is no longer enjoyable. --- To his credit, developer responded to review &reverted back to old list. THANKS! Game is back to excellent!

The updated app is very much like the one in NY Times. The buttons or hives for the letters are larger now and so it is easier to play. It is great that it gives you an idea of the total number of words and points possible which the NY Times one does not gove. Great app for passing your time on a flight. A recent thought is if it's possible to to make the pangrams of a different colour In the word list?

Very nice. Simple layout, simple functionality, non-intrusive. It's literally just the game and no other bloat which is fantastic for a bout of time killing word puzzling fun. The dictionary can be a tad whack at times, with words that I've never heard of before or missing some simple ones. All in all though, for a free game with apparently no monetization routes this is excellent. Nice work! Only recommendation is to rework the stars system, I rarely get above 3.

Fun but frustrating. Pluses: free and ad free is wonderful. What a treat. Easy to set up and run. BUT...Should have levels, like NYTimes, to encourage, since perfection is virtually impossible. Should allow sharing with friends and numbered games to identify them (or just the letters). (E.G.:"Help me with game 66 Atirlsh. I'm stuck at 42 words.") Would also be nice if game board and word list could be viewed simultaneously.

Fun game but the word list seems very arbitrary. It includes a lot of Italian and French words that I've never heard before, but there are a lot of common loanwords that are apparently not on the list. Also inconsistencies eg. "mayan" is acceptable but "incan" and "aztec" aren't. Can be quite frustrating!

I love the NYTimes version but don't want to pay for it. My suggestion would be to decrease the number of words a player has to find, even with the smaller dictionary. Anything over 25 is too many, particularly with the conjugations. Also sometimes I have put in correct words that the game rejects and then they come up as missed words

Would be nice, but it's got some work to do. The first puzzle I played I spent almost an hour trying to find the pangram before I gave up and checked a solver: no solutions available. There's no way to find out what the game thinks the valid words are for each board, like a "give up" option. I don't want to keep playing but always be thinking a puzzle is unsolvable.

Great app. Works really well. Lovely clean design. Two little improvements I'd love to see: 1) the possibility to exclude 's'. Having to add plurals of everything gets really long. 2) the possibility to save one game and start another.

Addictive. Occasionally doesn't accept words - most recently "tyrannic" which I spelled right and was in the list.....anyway, the best sleep medicine ever. Agree with reviewer who pointed out absurdly long lists. I never solve anything over 30 +/- words. Seems silly.

Incredibly poorly designed for Android! You can't see your score, you can't see the tabs at the bottom that allow you change to another puzzle, so have inadvertently pressed these buttons when solving a given puzzle and lost the puzzle, with no way to get it back. So frustrating! Redesign please!!!

Excellent game. I'm a fan of the NY Times puzzle and wanted another to play. What I really like about this version is that it tells you how many words total it is possible to create - something that the Times version does not do.

I'm a huge fan of the NYT spelling bee game, but got bored with this one. So many of the puzzles have the letter S, or the letters ING which make wordfinding dull and repetitive, reducing the challenge to data entry on a tiny keyboard.

I love this app. No bright colours and flashing lights, no 'prizes' or silly characters. Just simple design, easy to use, and doesn't treat you like a 4 year old. Love it!

Good word game. I enjoy the puzzle in the newspaper - this is quite similar, and delivers what it says ... I have only played the English version (dunno if there are others)... I would suggest turning off the extended dictionary option - and it's pretty fun. My whole family enjoys doing these

Love the take on the NY times games but have to wonder what dictionary they are using for the words. Not many modern usage words and many words I've never ever encountered. Many words appear to be from non-english languages but some commonly used ones in the US at least are not included.

Great job. But minus 1 star for using a strange English dictionary, where quite a few solid English words are unrecognized while allowing some really weird versions of slang, for example.

Lis. B. Feb 23, 2020

This is a great game though wish you could move along more than one puzzle at a time. Sometimes I want to start a new puzzle and still work on one I'm stuck on.

Great game! Offering some suggestions - other layout colors & games played history & leaderboard or more detailed scoring . The + sign brings up missed words. An enjoyable word game. No ads is a plus!

Fun & mentally stimulating. Would like to see a total list of all words from the letters supplied as an option, for more educational information.

I like this game. Would love to see some improvements/changes like others have mentioned. But for the free and add free game it is more than solid.
