StartPage Private Search

Use it on my desktop, but mobile is brutal. App is not styled well, but I can look past that for it's functionality. The results are surprisingly terse, the web searches move at a snail's pace, redirects are worse. The mobile results page continues to take a 3rd of the results page real estate w/ a reminder to install the mobile app (which is what I am using) & doesn't go away. I even used the banner's 'create a shortcut' button to create another in hopes it would toggle it off, but it doesn't.

Well, after many years of using only this app as an alternative to Google search, I am finally deleting it. I am very sad to have to do so, but it really just isn't useful any more. For years, it has worked perfectly, other than the super long start up time. The last few months though, the results have gone all weird. Half the time the results have nothing to do with the search terms I have entered, and will almost show a whole page of duplicate results. It simply doesn't work any more.

Good search engine and it has some decent features. The graphics are odd looking though, they look like JavaFx/Swing. It doesn't match the flat look of modern Android . Also I was disappointed, as I couldn't find a way to make it a widget very easily that could replace the search bar on the Microsoft Launcher. :( If you guys can do something about that, I'll gladly use this exclusively.

Strangely, once I downloaded & opened the app, a message appeared, advising me that the web site version is much better and more advanced than the app. They are correct. I uninstalled, and will continue to use the website, as I was previously using. I only downloaded the app because I had hoped it had a voice search option.

Obviously the biggest thing to love about startpage is the privacy. I am really thankful to have sp on my phone for that purpose, and because it is my primary reason for choosing sp, I'm happy with it. The one little con is that often when I type in a search and click "go", nothing happens. The page goes blank. It is always solved by minimizing the app and going back in, slightly annoying but not a big deal. Also, as a side note, I have used the desktop site for years and prefer it to the app.

The best. This is a search engine that does something radical on today's ad-cluttered internet. It actually follows the search parameters you type in and gives you the information you're looking for without a lot of ads and assorted garbage results. It's refreshing to find what I need without being steered in directions I don't want to go. Congratulations.

It's been almost a month since that this browser works on just the images search mode!!! this Browser has some problems but not worse than other Apps, as well as STARTPAGE has unique advantages that none of the other Browsers have. (Anonymous Search, ghostly visit of websites, without Ads & Cookies, finds the stuffs that Google filters & also other apps never show &...ect). That's why I loved it. Thanks so much 🤘🏻👍🏻✌🏼

I use this occasionally, but it really isn't that good. Everytime you open the app it tells you to use a shortcut of the website because it works better. The sad thing is that it does. No matter what I change in the settings, everything I search ends up 70% in another language or totally unrelated. This doesn't happen with the website. If your app doesn't work that well, doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of having one? I hate having to dig to find anything useful.

Startpage started out as a much more usable alternative to Google. However each revision that Startpage makes causes it to lose some of its workability. Startpage used to offer 100 search results. Then "powers that be" at Startpage decided to limit the search results to 20. Now with this new revision I can't find access to Advanced Search or to Image Search. It may be there somewhere. However, the difficulty in finding those options begs the question, "Why the revision in the first place?"

Once was better and safer than google but changes in 2019 have fouled the text search. Maybe changes in google"s engine haven't been responded to by start page's app engineers. Startpage is still useful as a browser but the workaround is to go to wikipedia and use their links at the bottom of topic pages, or click startpage search result links to out of date things and narrow the search from there. I am now trying Duckduckgo.

I'm just going through the settings and privacy/security and well, um you guys are, simply put, badass! You've done to the basics of this browser what takes the rest of the browsers control settings an inordinate amount of time in relation to the task. Thank you & keep up the above-par work!

Just OK, Worth the Trouble??? Can't set to open in Advanced Search: won't save settings consistently. Also, search, select a result, back out of the first result and are taken all the way out to blank search page, where you get to enter your search criteria all over again.

worthless. half the screen gets taken up by an ad for their mobile app(which is what im using), and wont close. try searching an image...once you figure out how. poor selection, many of which dont match your parameters. then trying to enlarge one. it may or may not open, and often as not, is not the image you clicked on

new update is screwed up. App has own built-in browser & search bar , however , when you switch to mobile version as it suggests you try , all of a sudden you'll have another search bar (Chrome browser in my case) & all of a sudden everything your doing is an open book..2&3 days later I've found my search results visable in chromes recent tabs..I've even found my search in chrome History..Couldn't seem to explain myself to their support very well. GOT TO UNINSTALL.

This review is based on my experience trying to access Startmail through the Startpage app. There isn't a Startmail app so I installed the Startpage app for that purpose. In this regard it's useless. One would think that Startmail would be accessible via Startpage, it's parent. It does bring up the Startmail log in screen but when I log in it will not accept or access the account. FYI I have a paid Startmail subscription but I have to use another app (Firefox in my case) to access Startmail. Throughout this I've discovered that Proton does have it's own very usable secure mail app. When my Startmail subscription expires I shall let it expire and purchase a Proton subscription. Bottom line - The Startpage app is halfway useless, and Startmail in general is very user unfriendly.

By calling itself a start page, one might reasonably assume there would be things to start from, as in beyond a search function. Meaning, ability to add links to favorite sites on the, ehem, home page. If actually available, I was unable to find after looking around and going thru settings. Uninstalled.

Why did you omit dark mode? (white text on black background. It's in the browser version!) Why is there no option to replace default search with this? Also, I can't Screenshot results to share. And you can't specify as many settings as in the online browser version. This app is handicapped in many ways.

ive had this app for years and it worked perfectly. About a month ago my search results were no longer relevant and now the filter is stuck on. im really disappointed in this app. i guess i have to find another one. if you fix the update let me know.

This is the slowest browser I have ever used; it provides very limited search results (most of which are in foreign langauges), and it has very poor on site navagation. I am rating Start Page with two stars for the following reasons: it does work (however crudely), and it does download (better and faster than it cascades web pages, though not very quickly overall - as compared to other browsers). This version should either be completely over-hauled, or be presented as a beta.

I want to say I remember this app being decent about a year ago. Everytime I've used it this year, it's basically been worthless Results are either slim to none or they are totally unrelated to my search. That being said, I have a major issue with the app as of today. It simply won't search. No matter the keywords I cannot get the app to actually search rendering it entirely useless. Why? I got Tor/Onion which is what I'll stick to. I'll wait a month for a fix, otherwise I'll be uninstalling

I get the app, only for the app to tell me it's no good?! I like startpage in the browser, but with this, for some reason, after the first result or two everything is always in Russian... On top of that, the app has a pop up that claims it does not give as good results as the website version, and offers to create a shortcut to this on my home screen. What's the point? I could have done that myself.

I have used this app (and site) for years happily, getting good search results backed by Google. But a few weeks back the app has begun returning very different results, definitely not from Google - reminds me of how bad ixquick was/is. Their blog is silent on this change.

Doesn't find anything anymore. It used to be good but now the search results are very poor. Many search phrases that I used in the past (and I did get useful results) now just return "nothing found" or with irrelevant results at best. Useless app. Uninstalling and switching to other providers.

Something happened around mid-March and it messed up the search results on the app. They are no longer relevant. The browser version is fine though. This app has now been relegated to junk. Duckduckgo, here I come!

Had high hopes after seeing Startpage being compared to DuckDuckGo so many times, often by a large percentile margin. Nonetheless, my experience was nothing near what I had expected. You're greeted right from the start with a text box is loosely translated to "Create a shortcut, our website is much better than the app" Well established company, I hope you can improve the app in the future; as I would love to try it again. Usage Time: 7~ Hours Searches: 27 Successful: 4/27 Irrelevant: 23/27

This app is completely useless, despite it using a great service. It's just a very simple browser that defaults to the startpage website. Right on their home page they say a bookmark to the mobile version of their website is better than the app itself.

This was better when I first installed some months ago. Recently the search results have been pretty useless, whereas, going back to Google it gives you the right results immediately. so, it's unfortunately back to Google.
