Storm Hunter WX

Developed in partnership with former KCCI-TV (Des Moines, IA) meteorologist John McLaughlin to provide a simplified display of advanced radar data and Safety Net Alerting to multiple locations with user-definable thresholds. McLaughlin pioneered the use of Doppler radar for severe storm tracking on Iowa television, working with Bob Baron of Baron Weather to develop and install the nation's first High Definition Doppler radar (VHDD) in 1995. Storm Hunter allows you the option to select notification as storms begin to produce lighting, hail, or rotation so you can be alerted even before official warnings are issued. Up to eight locations can be specified so you can make sure your loved ones know when dangerous weather approaches.

Storm Hunter includes five high resolution NWS radars covering Iowa. Select from radar intensity and velocity, plus one click threat delineation with the "Baron Button" breaking down storm cells into rain, hail and wind threats.

Storm Hunter's Future Scan product extrapolates storm cells from their current radar locations out to one hour including predicted decay or growth.

Detailed national radar will cover you across the United States, plus our "U.S. Severe Wind" product shows the areas of greatest wind shear as detected across the network of National Weather Service Doppler Radars. This tool is useful for quickly identifying rotation and damaging wind areas.

In addition to custom alerts, you can save multiple location for specific computer generated weather forecasts from the national weather prediction models. Forecast radar and rain/snow accumulations out to 24 hours and radar estimated rain totals are great features in the Storm Hunter app.

The Storm Hunter app is linked to the Iowa Storm Chasing Network for live streaming of severe weather events from the Storm Hunter Ford Escape chase vehicle and live radar analysis for significant tornado days.

Storm Hunter Weather is sponsored by the McLaughlin Family companies in Iowa, Including New Way Ford, New Way Auto Group, McLaughlin Imprint and Apparel and Hurricane Motorsports. Advertisement links include exclusive discounts on new and used automobiles and apparel for Storm Hunter users.

Meteorologist John McLaughlin says "The Storm Hunter app is a way for me to continue to share my passion for weather, even after my 31 year career on Iowa television ended due to a medical condition. Best of all, thanks to my family members financial support, the app is free to download and use. For that I am very grateful."

Has been pretty good overall, but lately it's randomly been way off. For instance, the temperature it's telling me is currently off by more than 10 degrees!!! Not the forecast, just the current weather. The forecast is actually more accurate. I tried to find a place to report issues, but couldn't find one so here I am. I hope this gets fixed cause I'm about to look for another app.

i really want to like this but its not easy to use. for starters, i don't care about the local weather for the week, i want it on radar first. i shouldn't have to click an extra button to get there. if you click on a storm it will list the cities. and if you click on the box it will show you what city will get hit first, pretty neat.... but, if i click a city that is affected on the map, it doesn't show when the storm will hit there. instead it brings me back to the main list, and its sorted by time and not alphabetically, there should be a second option. there is a menu item that takes you back to the program i'm using, why is that there? it does show you lightning which is good, but that map needs work. if the city goes to that list, that list should at least show the city i clicked on as the first thing. the thought of having to scroll down a long list while a storm is coming is crazy. more so that should be at the top of the screen, and the stats below that. things like the word HAIL should be in bold and in its own section listed with wind gusts, which i don't see. i like the idea of velocity maps, but its useless if its only a few areas.

I like the app. I was getting frustrated because it just started putting the temp in the notification bar. After several days I finally found where you can turn that feature off, yea! In the drop down menu on the upper left corner, select home. Then select the 3 dots in the upper right corner and select Status Bar Temp. Sorry, I don't know the technical terms.

I loved this app to begin with. But more recently I have had so many problems with it. I am now having to install a new app. Every time i try to open this one, it freezes and the app "stops working". I have updated it when needed, also tried uninstalling and reinstalling but didnt help. hopefully the issue will be fixed soon and i can return to this app!

It's.... Ok... Just ok... The temp in my status bar only updates to current temp if I open the app. I have figured out how to remove the status bar temp tho. I already have one that updates every hour, so I don't need this one anyways. Half the time, the app won't open (KYOCERA Duraforce Pro2 phone). When it does, the temp is accurate, I like the map functions, tho there's a learning curve to that. Overall, the app is ok. I'll keep it to use along with my AccuWeather app.

This was my go to Wx app. I've used this app to get a more in depth look at the storms. The refresh rate compared to the weather channel, along with the velocity and baron button were key features I loved to use. I was even able to predict tornado warnings ahead of time with this app! Idk what happened, but now the app won't load. Guess I'll just go pay someone else for a better app! Hope someone figures this issue out...

6-18-21 Update! I still have this app installed and it's still amazing for predicting storms and warning me before they hit. My only complaint is that I can't figure out where the settings are for the notification bar and it gets stuck on evening data. 9-1-20 I LOVE this app. Thank you devs!!! I was so surprised when this app warned me of a storm nearby and lightening 15 miles away. I have 2 other weather apps installed and received no other notices. This is a keeper!

Very disappointed, whenever I open the keyboard and do anything it immediately closes the keyboard. I came from active self protection and I figured it would be a good app but that was not the case. And talk about a circle jerk, why do you need to advertise storm hunter wx in your own app.

I enjoy the features of the app. But I'm always having to open the app up to get the current temp to update in the status bar of my phone. I've tried to email the developer with the email provided. But it was rejected/returned. Can you offer a solution to this issue? Thank you

Edit: All of these issues have been fixed. Thanks! I loved this app, but all of a sudden the 18hr future radar would not load. Now, after the update, the app will not load all together. It crashes as soon as I try to open it.

The temp, wind and precip forecast slider freezes quite often. The wind chill calculator doesn't work. Getting those items fixed and you'll have a great app

Disappointed by the radar's failure to show anything but a basic storm map. Any time I tried to use other map features, the app quit.

Joh. S. Mar 26, 2019

Had to revert to an older version because the Temperature now shows in my notification bar and CANNOT BE REMOVED. There are NO SETTINGS to TURN OFF temperature showing in the notification bar! FIX THIS, guys!

By far the best and most up to date radar app with relevant data on the marketplace, outside of Radarscope. I love being able to view traditional high and low pressure lines as well.

Jac. B. Jun 25, 2021

This app has one of the best implementations of storm path casting that I have seen to date. Very accurate, and functional interface for storm cell information.

This app is designed by a professional for professionals. Amateurs can also quickly make use of this app with intuitive and pictographic icons. Essential tool for those interested in multiple aslects of coming weather.

I loved this app, but something changed and it keeps force closing. Does not function correctly. Tried to email dev and got no response. Really hope this app starts receiving some support again!

Weather alerts are on point, but need a second weather app for a widget and the temp in the notification bar. If this had a widget and a notification bar temp, it would be perfect.

Car. b. Jul 30, 2019

It's pretty good... the widget works 50% of the time... and sometimes the time lapse does not work. I love all the features and we have to use them down here in tornado alley!

This is a very accurate weather app similar to the local weather app and within minutes of the real-time data that local weather app provides. I like it a little more because of some additional information this provides that my local weather app does not.

It won't open on a Galaxy Note S10 I'm very disappointed I downloaded this as an advertisement from active self protection I was very excited but the app won't even open it's ridiculous. Deleting it now

This used to be the best weather app I've found, but it quit working a month ago and no updating or reinstalling has helped. Please fix it, I really miss it
