StorySign

StorySign helps to open the world of books to deaf children. It translates children’s books into sign language, to help deaf children learn how to read.

There are 32 million deaf children in the world, many of whom struggle to learn to read. One of the main reasons being that deaf children can struggle to match printed words with the concepts they represent. With StorySign, we help change that.

HOW DOES STORYSIGN WORK?

Please make sure you have a physical copy of the book for StorySign to scan and bring to life.

STEP 1 - Download the app and click on the selected book from the StorySign Library

STEP 2 - Hold your smartphone over the words on the page of the book’s physical copy, and our friendly signing avatar, Star, signs the story as the printed words are highlighted

StorySign is a free app, that translates children’s books into 14 different sign languages: American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), Australian Sign Language (Auslan), French Sign Language (LSF), German Sign Language (DSG), Italian Sign Language (LSI), Spanish Sign Language (LSE), Portuguese Sign Language (LGP), Dutch Sign Language (NGT), Irish Sign Language (ISL), Belgian Flemish Sign Language (VGT), Belgian French Sign Language (LSFB), Swiss French Sign Language (LSF) and Swiss German Sign Language (DSGS).

So far, the app offers five popular children’s books for each local sign language, including much-loved best-selling titles from Eric Hill’s Spot series.

StorySign, a Huawei initiative, has been developed in close partnership with local deaf associations, deaf schools and the European Union of the Deaf, designed by Aardman Animations, and developed with classic children’s titles from Penguin Books.

This app has so much potential and I really wanted to like it however it's extremely confusing. On looking into things further it seems you need the physical book but when you search for help or information on the app you are presented with 3 pictures which do not really explain anything. There needs to be an option to use the physical book or purchase it within the app. I really hope that some improvements and clarifications are made, definitely would love to use.

This app could be great it has the potential and great goals in mind but one book is not enough! I would also say that it does seem pointless doing the camera scan if you only support certain books and cant use any book the owner has, you may as well just sell digital books with the animations attached! If this could read any of my kids books then i would give it 5 stars. I know it is a challenge but great start so far and with the introduction of more books maybe digital versions then deffo 5*

So, there are several clear problems with the app that need addressing. The only instructions or help are three unclear, unuseable icons.. It seems one must own the book and this is mentioned in a small (i) icon once a "book" is downloaded, but no mention is made of what to do to make it work. Another user mentions that the app only works for huawei which would be fair if that was mentioned by the developer. User-testing is tricky, but the app is currently unuseable. Best of luck, fixing it.

thank you for the start you have made with this app, it is perfect way of showing how technology can make anybodys life easier especially if they have any sort of disability. but this is perfect for being able to read books with people who are deaf i know that there is so many different types of sign languages around the world so it will take time for others to be added so i would never deducte stars because a certain sign language isn't included.

I love the concept as an educator of the Deaf, but I remember trying this app over a year ago and it has yet to improve. For ASL there are only three books and I tried one, but only got a blank screen after the title page. Great potential, but poorly executed.

Does not work. After downloading the book in LSE, the first page works okay, but then when you hit next, the screen goes black and does not change.

This app is nearly a year old and only has one book to read? Not only that, but you need to physically have the book as well and it doesn't even work. Why not just have something like a database of words that it can translate from the camera similar to Google Translate? Then you could read ANY book with your child.

Very disappointing! The commercials made it look like an incredible app finally helpful for Auslan and is nothing like it! Very very sad as I hoped to use it with the children in my childcare centre and obviously no can do!

1 book an we don't have the physical copy so pointless. I thought there was meant to be a scan option so u could scan barcode of books which would be amazing but either it doesn't have 1 or I can't find it. this would be amazing for my deaf daughter if it actually worked why market something that doesn't work????

To the people who are giving bad reviews and saying the app doesn't work properly. If your phone isn't huawei, that's why. The app can work with other phones but its made for huawei phones. Instead of complaining about the app, think about getting a better phone.

and there was me thinking this would be an app which would let me take any book and the app would translate it into sign language. The advert on tv makes it look like a breakthrough but this app really doesn't do anything unless you have the one book featured in the app

Wow is this impressive. And while the library is super small so far it's really cool this allows for so many different sign languages.

It's ok obvious they need to add more books. I was surprised this app was free I'm guessing it will eventually become in-app purchased to read other books, I just hope it not overly priced . For all those disappointed with not having Makaton . Deaf children rarely use that, (B)SL is their language and is the official way of communicating, makaton is used for children learning to talk with visual gestures without replacing words, where as SL is deaf community's language.

Just a PR stunt. 1 book is all you get. Very disappointed with the app. You don't scan and read. You use the 1 book. Did I say there is just 1 book. Deaf people are going to be bored really quickly. Don't download this.

I don't get it. After the opening titles of The Lonely Penguin there is a page of book type signs and pressing them results in a blank page. Brilliant.

Incredible app! What an innovative and genuinely lovely move by Huawei. This is why technology continues to be an amazing global movement.

Amazing idea, really hope this takes off as it could be ground breaking and make such a difference to so many children. Extremely impressed!

Have book with me and camera open is fine but will not read texts anymore. Strange because before works fine and now not more. Delete app and install again nothing helped 🤔

Emma wiggle told us to download it and it's the best app ever It doesn't wanna communicate with my books I cannot get it to work with my book despite doing it how it shows with the phone

Gei. K. Dec 5, 2018

Looks very interesting, but it makes no sense you need the physical book to use it...

Jod. F. Dec 18, 2018

good app. need the books though to change to Sign so useless if you don't have the hardcopy book.

This is clearly a PR stunt. What a shame that this offers such a great idea, but delivers so little.
