Downloaded for free yesterday. Learning curve, for sure. Tutorial could be improved. Been playing the single player campaign, but had to exit out of a level a few times now because I can't bring the "town" back into his street zooming out. So while I'm sure it's fun if you understand what's happening, the zooming issue is really annoying. And I think the overall UI could be better implemented.
The game itself is fun to play and the different levels and goals keep it challenging. However, this game can be quite buggy - a few times it has told me I've won and reached all the goals even when i didn't, and vice versa when i have reached all the goals it uses statistics completely different to the ones in my city and says i lost. Fix this issue and I'd give it 5* no doubt.
The instructions are spotty and incomplete. For example, some tiles have liabilities that are not explained in the rules or tutorial. The tutorial is cursory and short. It desperately needs a late game move or two to show players how to think about that. The strategy section is laughable and there is no explanation of how red lines work. The interface works great and is easy to use and understand. Obviously I could enjoy this game if I could learn it, but that is not possible with it currently.
'Suburbia' is a port of the board game. If you liked 'Castles of Mad King Ludwig' you'll like this as it's by the same people and made to the same high standards. —PROS: The game works well on any hardware. Gameplay makes a reasonable amount of sense. Nice graphics and music. Fairly quick. Doesn't cost a lot. —CONS: No Google Play Games achievements or game save backup, if that matters to you. 'Castles' has Google Play Games integration, but it's broken, which is worse than not having it at all.
Great Game...but a few suggestions: 1) need a campaign save progress function across different devices. 2) needs a zoom out function to get a COMPLETE VIEW of the played tiles; it is crazy having to drag the screen around so much. This is especially true in Campaign mode as the tiles are spread so widely. (More specifically, the zoom in function works fine, the zoom out function doesn't go far enough in my opinion.)
Game seems to randomly decide whether or not tiles are connected in campaign mode. I've won games I should have lost and lost games that I should have won. Also, the game play itself is much more a game of luck than strategy. It really depends on who gets access to what tiles and which tiles were actually included in the deck each game. I was hoping for more of a strategy game. Also, navigation and readability leave a lot to be desired.
controls are pretty bad. as mentioned by others, if you drag the board and lose sight of any tiles, you cannot drag the playable area back into view. you are forced to quit the app and restart from scratch! since there hasnt been any updates for a long time, I don't think the app is worth playing in this state.
Fun time, but UI needs overhaul. The market covers up half (or more) of the screen for 90% of the game, making it impossible to watch other players' moves or get a feel for what your city looks like from a large scale. However, besides that issue the adaptation is lovingly done with great attention to detail.
The underlying game itself is good. But this rating is purely for the app. Mechanics of the app seem to work fine. The instructions for the single player game are very bad. The first level says "Connect schools to the university". I've lost twice for not doing this. I'm assuming now that at least one school has to be directly adjacent to the university? I shouldn't have to guess what the win condition is! Improve the grammar so players don't have to guess how to win
Good game, but plenty of bugs! I found the tutorial under hints. It wouldve been better if the tutorial popped up as skippable when you first open the game. Second, zooming in means potentially losing position and lose the display of tiles all together, in other words it has happened multiple times where i zoom in and the tiles vanish. Then I'd have to exit and lose. A tile says "for every adjacent (whatever), +1 population" it also counts every single connected green tile. Fix the bugs please.
This looked like an interesting strategy game. Unfortunately the design of this digital version is abysmal. It's slow and the interface is clumsy, but honestly I could look past all that. But then I scrolled too far from the board and now I'm "lost" in a white void! And this is a premium game? Immediately uninstalled.
Good game, fine adaptation but annoyingly buggy. Besides the zoom problem, I can't finish Atlanta. Objectives say connect all tiles, which I do, earn more than 10, same, and 30 Max inhabitants, and despite being either above or over, the connect all tiles and under 30 are both a fail every time... So you can't finish the campaign that way.
Grest game, but screen size issue is annoying, stops me playing the "local play" games on my new phone altogether as I can't see the button to start the game! I hope it gets fixed. I'd love to be able to play in portrait rather than landscape, there's nothing in the game that would prevent it.
Won't let me long press to decrease volume. Leave the app for a while and the sounds and music are on. Just let me long press to decrease or increase volume, come on. I should not have to click click click. That's nuts. Why on Earth would you change how volume works? Maybe it's a bug? Fix for 4 stars. It's a fine app otherwise. Glad I can play with classic art, which I vastly prefer.
Good game, poor version of it. Up coming KS funds will hopefully improve the app, but currently way too many issues. So game breaking, many small issues, mostly with UI. Others it is easier to restart then resolve, like if you scroll the city off the screen, it is very time consuming to try and find it again.
No tutorial makes this one impossible for a new player to learn. I've played Castles of Mad King Ludwig extensively so I could muddle through it but it was frustrating and not fun. Add a tutorial and I could see this being a 5 star game. Unless you already know how to play the tabletop version, I would stay away from this one.
I got this game free with the purchase of the CE Kickstarter boardgame. It has rapidly become one of my favourite games on my phone and lets me play through various strategies before receiving the final product. The only downside I can find is that there are still some AI improvements that need to be done. Like buying a tile that is available for +6 when the same tile is available for +0 and there isn't the goal of least money... Broken now on Sansung Galaxy Tab (2022)
Adequate for a short play, the difficulty levels are way off though. Games are way too short, interface is far from intuitive, and there's nothing to really capture the players interest in terms of rewards.
Great game and I've enjoyed the app, but after the latest update not only were all of my old saved games lost, but the only game I've saved since the update I could open. I could delete it accidentally trying to open it, but I couldn't actually open it no matter how many times I tapped.
Great port of the boardgame. The automatic calculations are great and the special edition tiles design make it much more interesting visually. The campaign mode is a great addition and will keep you busy for a while.
Vaguely worded win conditions mean you have to play levels repeatedly to guess-and-check what's wanted. If you zoom or pan, about half the time it leaves the game stuck in an unplayable view. This game is broken and in no way worth any charge.
The UI is clearly meant for a tablet as it is very nearly unplayable on phone (and I mean that literally and without embellishment). Possibly the worst app implementation of a board game that I have encountered.
it's OK but the single player needs work. it is boring, overly difficult even on easy, and you can't unlock additional sets of cards without beating it. Fun at times but also frustrating.
there was a reason this app was free. The zoom bug will get every single one of your games and you will be unable to finish any of your games. You can accidentally zoom out so far your play area dissappears off the screen with no way to recover or even zoom back you will be forced to restart and lose everything.
Cannot install game on a pixel 2. After pending over an hour downloading, it always errors out and tells you to try again. Which takes just as long. On my Samsung tablet, on which I was able to install it, I cannot play it almost anywhere because there is no way to turn off extremely loud music. Can turn off "effects" but not completely silence the app, and music ignores Do Not Disturb too. This means I can't use the app ANYWHERE other people are who might be disturbed. This is unacceptable. Game is unusable if you can't silence it.
saw the game on sale for free... started it up, read a bit. placed the tile and couldn't do anything after. The controls/layout needs reworked. The game hasn't been updated in 2.5 years...
The rules of this game are poorly explained and I was never able to figure out why certain values changed with certain moves. Ive heard good things about the board game, but this app is not a friendly introduction to it.
True to its physical version. Barebone gfx/sfx. No online MP, only AI and Local P&P. UI is clunky, not ideal for cellphones. Tiles in the Market Area are too big and cover half screen, making it difficult to have a clear overview of what's going on. Tutorial is lacking but Rulebook and Tiles Overview are provided. Campaign mode is fun and unlocks expansions. Can switch between Collector's Ed tiles and Classic. To solve the zoom-out bug: tap the Cog icon topleft > Recenter. Good but buy on sale.
