►► SuperBetter is Living Gamefully

“At the heart of SUPERBETTER is a simple and potentially transformative idea: We can use the same psychological strengths we display when we play games to confront real-life challenges, whether it’s illness, injury, or just changing our habits for the better.”– Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

Living gamefully means bringing the same psychological strengths you naturally display when you play games – such as optimism, creativity, courage, and determination – to your real life. It means having the courage and openness to try out different strategies to discover what works best. It means collaborating with allies, and building up the resilience to tackle tougher and tougher challenges with greater and greater success.

►► The Science Behind SuperBetter

Powered by the science of games, positive psychology and behavior change.

SuperBetter is validated in two clinical studies:

• A randomized controlled study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania found that playing SuperBetter for 30 days significantly reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, and increases optimism, social support, and player’s belief in their own ability to succeed and achieve their goals. They also found that SuperBetter users were significantly happier and more satisfied with their lives.

• A clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health and conducted at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital found that using SuperBetter improves mood, decreases anxiety and suffering, and strengthens family relationships during rehabilitation and recovery.

I read the book Superbetter and installed the app to support my gameful process. It makes keeping score so much fun. Thanks a lot! Giving it 4 stars because I would love to see a few more functions to make it more game-like: create conditional quests - quests that only become available after certain quests are accomplished (I see that in the ready-made packs but cannot create it myself); create quests that take multiple times to finish (like, do something 3 times) so that I can follow progress.

Confusing as hell! Links ain't working, can't find my HQ, needs a straightforward path to moving through each day. If you are depressed, confused, anxious, this only frustrates. Too much text. I understand this was a personal project to wellness but now I'm left getting reminders of an app I want to use but can't figure out.

I'm really trying to get into it, but it's not intuitive. The interface suffers from cryptic titles for tasks; these are to make it more playful, but I find it simply confusing. I also have no control over items to declutter and organize what I need to focus on. Looking forward to updates in the interface and maybe an introductory tutorial to show how to get set up.

It's great, but there are some things that would be awesome if could be changed, improved. 1. Would be great if i could delete some power ups. 2. And it would be awesome if we could with quests and experience and power up design and customize our own character! Like get outfits, see him change in size or looks, depending on what we do. Or build our own sanctuary, our safe place, a beatiful enviroment for us. I'll keep using this app, it's great!

Would be great if it stopped bugging me to rate it every few actions (should do that no more than once daily); I haven't yet used it enough to get an idea of the details & utility. Wish it had a little more customization, like showing visually which trait a quest or powerup affects, and letting me group quests into small sub-groups so I could feel less overwhelmed. But it helps me balance tasks, challenges, and self-care, and gives useful advice and inspiration, and it improves my mood.

I love this app and concept! Very cool and encouraging. However, a bit frustrating to use. I have an android phone and turns out some of the very crucial buttons needed to access information (ie buttons at bottom of screen including HQ) don't exist for Android. My friend has an iPhone and her app looks completely different. Where my power ups look way more engaging (not the topics but the styles) than hers and hers seem awkward to use. On the flip side I have no access to so called science cards

I enjoy the concept a lot, but the app is need of updates. For example a lot of links to articles do not work (you have hit edit, find the URL, and then copy and paste it into a browser window to learn what it says). Also, it seems that some of the topics presented could use a refresh. Despite that, I still"play" with it because it's fun.

Awesome concept. Recommend to all my friends. Feedback: (1)Be able to edit/remove power-ups. For example: "playing with my cat that is no longer alive for 10mins" is triggering to see. (2)Allow multiple resilience slots for quests and power-ups. Example: "having a hard conversation" is both good for emotional & mental. (3)More variety of completion music. The fanfare is annoying. (4)More artwork & personalized avatars. It helps our imagination and reward centre when we see our imaginary selves.

App needs to improve the early experience. As a new user, I find the app too confusing and frustrating to use. I am giving up. My big complaint: the early quest instructions don't match the UI so it's difficult to figure out how to complete them or learn the basics of the app. E.g., one says "Go to HQ" but there is nothing called "HQ" anywhere. I think that means the main popout menu but unsure. Another says "click on your name at the top of this page" and that doesnt exist on the page. :(

I had writer's block for over a year. I read different ways to overcome it but nothing worked for me. It was really a mental block, I was holding myself back. I couldn't write much down for my novel. I've tried another app for task management, it's a great app but didn't help me. A friend from church told me about SuperBetter and I thought 'sure why not give it a try'. I used it for a few days and did the quests, power ups, and defeat bad guys. This app helped defeat my writer's block and I was able to write three pages in my notebook without self criticism. I watched the Ted Talk and I'm a gamer so that pushed me over the edge to really be diligent in using the app. It does have errors and the app crashes. This app really helped me so I can give the crashes a pass.

For whatever reason the registration process within the app didn't work. Both the username and password were flagged. I changed them both and they were flagged again. The warning on the username said, "Your username might be OK, but." It cut off there. The password just had a flag with no explanation. Tried to log in with facebook (even though I'd rather not link the two programs). That didn't work either.

Good concept but no instructions. "Help" doesn't contain help. Found a video tutorial on YouTube but it referenced content that doesn't seem to exist in the app. I poked around, activated a power up to see what it did, then app insisted I type in some content about that, poked around the app some more, was annoyed that hitting back key knocked me out of the app completely. Gave up and uninstalled. 2 points for a great concept. Next step, make it usable for everyone, not just digital natives.

I was really won over by the website, especially as someone with mental illnesses who struggles with executive function and motivation. It was so disappointing to see the app hasn't been updated in so long and barely loads on my phone. I wanted to give it an honest try but it's not really feasible currently. I hope the company is able to dedicate work for this app again in the future.

I just downloaded this app, so I'm not too familiar with it yet. But I already noticed & am disappointed that it requires going through email or fb/twitter to connect with user support system. This app needs to include connecting through texts. My support people would see texts right away, & not notice emails for days/weeks. We don't email, with texting being so convenient for quick, informal contact. And I do not use social media for my personal issues. Please consider all of this & update app.

Just downloaded, day 2 playing. I like the concept, it's all little easy steps, links in to my therapy. It would be so much better if the links worked from within the app, they work on the website, but I would have thought a game designer would put effort into the app, maybe just a PC gamer 😆. Will come back to update.

Blu. L. Jan 15, 2020

Honestly better than therapy, it also incorporates a lot of powerful ideas from eastern philosophy in a fun package and with science to back it up. It works so well because it "tricks" the brain into focusing on what's already great about life or what can we do to make it even better (solutions to challenges), with this "feel-good" filter the brain literally rewires itself to acknowledge the endless opportunities for growth and well-being that are available to us at all times.

It's a great idea, and I think it's good this app is inspiring other apps now. There is zero support or help for users of the app. The game definitely pulled me in, which made it kind of rough when features didn't work properly. There's no in-app help. I tried the developer e-mail, it bounced. I tried tweeting at the app's page, and got nothing. It's confounding to me how hard this app is promoted without ANY energy or effort put into helping users on the ground. I can't recommend it.

Lar. W. Jan 18, 2021

I like the idea behind the app, and is one of the only trackers actually optimized for what I'm looking for. However, I dislike that it doesn't work offline, and the appearance feels unpolished. The tutorial is limited in the app, with everything on their webpage or blog.

I really like the premise of this app. I've been using it to stay on task as I try to finish my degree. I do find that I forget about it a lot though. I kind of wish that there were more structured goals and it did more celebrating when you met those goals than it does. It's nice to give myself a thumbs up but there's something to it when an app celebrates back that makes you want to keep at it. I'm still learning and trying to figure out all the features though...

I checked out supperbetter after an episode of Extra Credits I watched writen by its creator. The suggested quests and activities are useful in thinking of ways to manage my depression, recovery and health. I am using it along side habitica and they seem to reinforce eachother pretty well when it comes to getting tasks done and building new healthier habits. It would be nice to be able to add allies more easily either through linking Facebook or searching a list of current users for contacts

Great app. Very intuitive and engaging. I'd give it 5 stars if the links within the various quests worked. Update: the various sections of the app are a bit slow to update. I wonder if it's better to ditch this app and go to the website instead...

Ale. R. Mar 25, 2022

It's starting to get my brain working. Ive tried everything even marriage. To keep my brain motivated and working to get things done but with ADHD and agoraphobia I'm working in a positive way to get the things most people do everyday with some form of positivity and get it done. Hopefully.. I'd like to thank the person out there for helping others challenge ourselves and think from a different perspective on how a task can be done🥰! Thank you!

Dan. M. Aug 21, 2019

The idea is nice. The app is terrible. It always gives back errors when trying creating new quests for example. Some features are not even available (deleting items from the list) while they are possible on the website. It's a pity...

Cal. F. Nov 30, 2019

So far, I really like Super Better. I wish I could make nested quests so I could focus on the first steps of a project, and unlock more steps as they were done. I'd also like to have more control over repeats (only weekdays, every other week, every 4th Thursday, that sort of thing) I recommend you set it up from a computer.

Tao. O. B. Mar 1, 2020

I love this app and try to get all my friends on it. A great way to use structure and science to over come so many things. The only problem is that it doesn't keep up my score properly and I think it might need some maintenance. It's been out for 8+ year, so that is understandable.

sar. n. May 11, 2022

i like how straight forward this game it. it doesn't trivialize how hard life can be by cutesy-ing it up. there also aren't any pay walls which is nice. life is hard enough and getting help is expensive enough. i shouldn't have to pay a tax on everything because my brain doesn't work right.

Ste. H. Dec 2, 2019

Been using this app on & off for years. It's great. There are a bunch of new power packs that don't seem as helpful as the older ones bc they just give you articles to read instead of actions to perform. I actually scour the app store for similar apps a few times a year but have never found anything that works as well.

m. p. Nov 2, 2018

Problems getting the app to load, have to connect WiFi,then open app which will work for a little while until I try to comment, then it gets stuck loading so have to close app, disconnect from WiFi & re-open it.The website is better & has more features, but the app is good for on the go. I recommend both.

The. M. Jun 15, 2019

Alright, my life is not better due to the application, I've downloaded the app to compliment my journey. In this sense, I find it works very well. Sometimes the loud happy sounds of hitting a mini-goal brings attention to me in public places for which at times I must apologise, but overall I find it stimulating. After all, it's not about what the people think of me but what I think of the people. That's a healthy Queen Victoria sentence for you right there!
