Syrinscape: Tabletop RPG Sound

Syrinscape creates immersive sound design and a movie-like Soundtrack for tabletop games.
For Android Tablets and phones!

Syrinscape will transform your next role-playing or tabletop gaming session. Syrinscape is a revolutionary sound design app created in Australia by tabletop role-playing aficionados. The app conjures every aural landscape imaginable, from ethereal forests or dank, vermin-filled dungeons to the spooky depths of the underworld. Try it out for FREE and then Register at www.syrinscape.com to buy more content.

Unlike other soundboard-style apps, Syrinscape uses editable and adaptable libraries of sound files – SoundSets – to 'improvise' soundscapes, allowing users a great degree of control over what they are hearing, while requiring almost no interaction while the app runs.

The Syrinscape Fantasy Player app is optimized for Android Tablets, giving users the ability to playback Syrinscape SoundSets with a beautiful, easy-to-use interface. The Syrinscape Fantasy Player comes with two free SoundSets ready to download, then you can purchase additional SoundSets as you need. All the fantasy SoundSets you buy from the Google Play Store or the Syrinscape Store will be available across all devices you own, so you can pick up whichever device is to hand and immerse yourself in whatever sound world you desire.

Great music and soundsets. Unfortunately they take up alot of space and you are unable to make the app store them on an SD in the expenasion slot it all goes on to built in memory. Additionally the layout in app can be frustrating as you scroll down to adjust a specific sound you often grab another sounds slider and turn it way up or down.

Horrible UI, average sounds. The UI is so horrendously bad it's almost laughable, I don't mean to be cruel, but it's nigh unusable in some places on even a decently sized screen. The sounds are okay at best. I want this one to do well, I really do, but I can only rate the app as it is presented to be right now, and it's not good, I can justifiably pay a subscription for this, I'll try again in 12 months, I'll sent a reminder for myself to check back.

The app is fine, though the UI could be optimized more. I like being able to change the levels and elements in each scene, and the pre-made scenes for campaigns are pretty good. What really keeps me from giving this app any more than two stars, however, is that this app crashes once every 30 mins. It just stops and closes with no warning. Please fix this.

Love the idea, hate the execution. If you are putting the time in beforehand and have a dedicated tablet-device just for running this during the actual play sessions, then you might be ok. Reasons for this are mainly the unresponsive and finnicky UI, the fact that it stops when you leave the app and the high percentage of low quality and rather tacky sound files. With just an UI update (seriously) and a little more customizability this could easily be 5 stars.

I tried for 30 minutes to log into my account, this is the worst in app experience there is, just the worst.....

It's a fantastic idea, just not suited for phones at the moment. There are so many soundsets which is great, but it's very hard to navigate through them all as they're not grouped by any particular settings or anything (ie. Creatures, Cities, etc.). Maybe some tags to search through all of the soundsets would be good. The screen rotates regardless of whether or not the phone setting for rotation is on or not. There is something off with the resolution so everything looks a tad blurry, and upon initial launch there doesn't seem to be any help tutorial or tips to help you figure things out. These however are minor gripes. All in all great idea, but needs more polish.

Sounds are not bad, and that you can create your own soundscape is a good idea. That's where the positive part of this review ends. Looks like a website from the early 2000's and interfacing with it feels like it too. pulling the bar from the side to pick your soundscape makes 2/3's of the screen useless for half of the experience. You have to register from the website, takes a long time to work in app. And you have to download all the sounds after installing the app?! Good idea bad execution.

The soundsets are great, but this review is about the app that delivers the soundsets. Overall, the app isn't terrible. Graphically, I can see what they were going for, and if done well, it could be pulled off. However, as it is, the app feels clunky and bloated with needless graphics. It is slow at times and sometimes bugs out so that you cannot see parts of the UI necessary to play the sounds. The design would be fine for a Windows app, for example, but it fails as an Android app.

In theory, this could be a good app that I would use. In practice, the UI looks like it was created in 2008 or so and hasn't aged well. The audio compression seems pretty rough and it's a little hinky that it needs to download to your device to use, should be an offline mode like Spotify. It has potential, but that's about it. Maybe they should move the resources from Facebook advertising where I found it and use those funds to create a better app experience.

Fantastic range of premade RPG ambiences, music and sound effects, perfect for my in person D&D games. It's better on a tablet or laptop, easier to use and the sound is better quality, but works perfectly fine on my android phone. I recommend using it in landscape rather than portrait for easier access to the menu. If you have any problems using it, their customer support team are really friendly and knowledgeable.

Positives: Beautiful music, which is exactly why somebody would want this app. Easy to use and understand. Negatives: Interface is not nearly as beautiful as the music. I don't have enough space on my phone to download all the soundscapes. Syrinscape really isn't optimized for an app at this point, but get it downloaded to a computer asap because it's worth it!

Had a bad experience trying to use this before. Came back to see if it's been improved. Nope. Poor UI design, doesn't play in the background, sound downloads still lockup at ~90%. I had really high hopes for this app. The sounds you can get working are phenomenal. It's just not reliable enough to be worth it.

Essentially unusable. The app UI is so bad that it takes multiple tries to get where you want to go in the app. Each sound pack has to be downloaded separately with no option to sample the sounds. I honestly can't say whether or not the actual sounds we're good because between the UI and having to download additional files for an app I didn't like using, I uninstalled the app before I could get that far. Maybe this service is better on other platforms, but this app isn't worth it.

A fantastic soundboard and mixer... when it works, and if it wasn't for a slew of bugs and poorly implemented features dragging it down. I use it on both my phone (S20+) and Galaxy Tab S5e, and the experience (when it works), gets my party very immersed. However, I've given up on Syrinscape after 4 sessions of trialling sound-mixing as a player. Simply put, the bugs make it too difficult, the clunkiness of some "features" and the general navigation of the app (especially when you're diving deep into the many soundpacks) becomes too slow to make effective use out of.. If the following issues were addressed, it'd be a straight 5/5 no brainer for me. 1. The sound cuts the moment you switch out of the app. This is awful. Every other app plays sound in the background, why does Syrinscape pause when it's tabbed? I even tried split-screening my apps to no avail, makes DJing on the tablet with the big screen annoying since I also use it for my character sheet. I also will sometimes layer some ambience from YouTube if the need arises, having the sound jarringly cut really ruins the atmosphere. 2. The "custom moods" section is terrible... The fact that I can save a "mood" and it activates sounds in a handful of different sound packs, with no clear indication of what's playing in what pack, which I then have to locate each soundpack and each sound, just to either mute or modify one minor sound, that's horrible. As with all other "soundpacks", it should show whatever saved loops are associated with the "custom mood". Honestly, custom soundpacks made out of already-downloaded packs would be an incredible gain. 3. I get that having battle sounds on the drawer is helpful, but it should be customise-able. We have an animal in our party that I have to find a specific pack every time it makes a noise, all for 1 button that I could have on hand. It would be extremely useful to have the "quick sound" drawer IF I could actually choose what's there - I don't need 10 combat sounds I won't use and 2 I will, only to go spell searching through 30 spells for the 1 spell my team-mate has - also takes too long, and the moment is ruined. 4. Depending how many sounds are layered, some outright won't play sometimes, other times, they won't play at all regardless of anything else playing. It's disappointing because I paid for the subscription because it seemed so promising, but the app completely ruined the experience for me and I've cancelled my subscription unfortunately. Hopefully with some new features implemented I can start adding it back to my sessions!

The app doesnt play in the background which is a big con for when I play my games on the go. The PC app plays in the background, so this seems like a bug instead of a feature. The Syrinscape experience is a delight and I would rate higher just for how well the soundscapes are constructed. They give you a few sound scapes for free which I found were really handy, but I'm not quite sold on the monthly subscription or the cost for each sound scape, but it's worth checking out.

this should be a5 Star review, but to have landscape sounds with any scifi/laser/mech/zombie sounds you have to install 2 different programs that are not compatible and can't run at the same time. it requires 2 different devices to do so. the custom sound sets also need a huge overhaul. it allows you to turn on sounds and save them to a set, but gives no control after that. it needs to create a list of what you have playing so you can adjust volume and control just like the prebuilt sets.

The UI is bad on phones and tablets, and you have to download music files locally.. as opposed to streaming. For the amount of marketing I see for this app on a lot of VODs and Podcasts from groups that use it, I was surprised tbh. As far as the free content that is usable once you figure it out via the awkward UI, it works as advertised. Not sure if it there was a way to organize sound effects but I guess that is a product of the unusual UI. Good ambience. Terrible usability. **---

Terrible UI, wouldn't let me play a pack I got on the website with a voucher (it doesn't show up in the list, even after restarting and reloading). I didn't bother to find out how well the rest worked, because it wasn't what I was there for and the UI is, again, terrible.

Definitely one of my favourite apps. The soundscapes are great for accompanying board games just as much as they are role-playing campaigns. There is a huge variety of soundtracks and a lot of customisation within that. Cracking this app out at a party has been met with a lot of 'ooooo's and laughter. I hope you recommend you give this little app a go!

This app tries to do some cool things, but it is built in an incredibly amateurish way and lacks some basic necessities. Its interface uses horrible, slow, difficult custom components that make it look like a cheap port of an ancient Windows app instead of being built with sleek modern Android stylings. But the biggest problem, the thing that takes it from awkard and unwieldy but useful to utterly unusable, is that it has no Chromecast support. If I can't use on my Home, this serves no purpose.

Tried 3 times to use this. On the first attempt I skipped the registration part just so that I could access the bones of the app to see if it was any good. Non of the free content seemed to download. So I tried to sign in. Which I can't do because I need to register. But there is now no option I can find to register. So I uninstall and reinstall to try get the Registration option to reappear. Nope. So I tried again. Nope. Really bad UI in my opinion based on this small attempt. Shame.

The interface looks like its a 2006 flash game. It's so low-quality graphics-wise. The audio is compressed/lossy and the audio on my phone barely plays and you have to boost the gain by using an external speaker which lowers the audio quality even more. Love the idea but not the execution.

E. C. Jan 27, 2020

I find this very useful for Online Tabletop gaming. It has voice acting for Pathfinder adventure paths as well as hundreds of sounds to chose and mix to create your own scenes for homebrew. The only downside is software to make this play through my mic is impossible to set up so I have to use a second computer. It works for local games too but have some decent speakers or it'll sound like trash on your mobile phone.

Dav. Oct 25, 2019

Really quiet, bland samples. From the content I've seen, it's not worth paying for any of the add on packs. You're better off with a soundboard and Dndify at least you can run them both in the background. Shame because I was really excited for this app, but it's just not as good as my current setup which is free.

Panel on the right hard to close for access to list on left. App worked exactly one time for me then would not play any other sounds or settings when selected. Closing and opening again did nothing. Uninstalling setting and trying again did nothing. Has potential and I'd like to try this app again with some work done to it.

Would not recommend. So far I have been told that I had purchased the app, despite no indication that I was making a purchase beforehand. Additionally, nothing downloads until an account is created. I certainly would not recommend based on personal experience. I do have a friend who is enjoying the experience and has had no real issues so far. I felt I need to mention this, because I believe that providing a balanced review allows people to make informed decisions. Wish you better luck.

Last year, you were able to sample app and now, you need to register. The app does not prompt a link or give any directions on where to register, like the website. I checked the About The App link here and found email link to register. Untill I can sample or purchase anything, rating will stay at 1 Star. Dragon+ gives a good rating so I expect good sounds.
