TalkingPlaces

Talking Places is an accessible Android application developed by Zdeněk Papež as a diploma thesis at Czech Technical University in Prague in 2011. The application was designed for visually impaired people, providing them with information in surroundings. The application was successfully tested on blind users.

The application is fully functional for sighted users as well.

Features
* uses Android accessibility to provide feedback for visually impaired people (works best with TalkBack, KickBack and SoundBack accessible services installed)
* provides localized (GPS) about points of interest in the surrounding
* communicates with OpenStreetMap, Google Maps, Wikipedia and Panoramio to retrieve data
* enables filtering, sorting
* filtering by current street
* includes virtually tactile map of places in an accessible MapView?
* search by name
* easy to ask for walking directions (uses Gmaps)

If this worked as in the video it would be brilliant but it does not. Places around me are found but distance and direction are not talked. A sighted friend says that the info is on the screen but I am blind so that is no good to me. I tried it on three different phones with the same result. a great shane.

I'm doing for my husband. We're near EBT food stamp office, school bus stn, major restaurants & stores, gas stations, mfg plants etc. It didn't pick up any of them. McDonald's, Family Dollar, Save-A-Lot, BP Gas, Subway, car lots, bus stop, Major tax place, beauty shop & barber salon, etc. This is horrible. I turned GPS to help locate places. Nothing. This is horrible!!!!

Five starts just for the idea and the effort, I am an Android Developer thinking in a project to help visually impaired people and I saw this project to help them in their mobility needs. Thank you for doing this type of job, all efforts in this area are welcomed.

personally I think it would be a lot better if people would actually show and squirtle how to use applications service
