This is a very good app for learning how to read Japanese. Some of the best features are it's ability to analyze words from a story and letting you save those words for later review. Such a well done app and its free. Update: One feature I wish it has is the ability to look up individual kanji when I look up a word/term. For example, when I look up 選手, I see that it means player. But I can't break down the individual kanji for their own meanings. I think adding that will be very helpful.

Overall, the redesign is great. However, I also would like to see the vocabulary review option returned to the app. I use it way more than Anki. So the export feature, while neat, isn't something I will use much. It was helpful to read the article and then use the quick flashcard review tab to see what vocab I remembered. I loved how it tagged the vocabulary so that I could see which words I had gotten right or wrong before. This was very useful. If possible, please bring it back.

This is probably the best japanese reading app available. The app has some pretty great features including JLPT level marked words, vocabulary building lists, book marks to your favorite articles, and an amazing dark mode option. But as great as the app is, it isn't without its faults. The app is fairly buggy and some features (though nice to have) the way they're implemented isn't very intuitive. Ive even had one instance where an article wouldn't even open. It's a bit buggy, but also the best.

Generally it's been a good app since I downloaded it. Plenty of articles to read and the furigana was mostly correct. The only complaint I really had was having to reset the word settings every time I opened the app. Unfortunately, the app hasn't been working for days. I just get a blank screen. I tried reinstalling the app and that didn't fix anything.

The app has been built very well, but there are a few problems as follows: There's a big problem in this app. Even on negative inflections of adjectives or verbs, it shows the positive meaning. Could be very misleading. Sometimes the app randomly crashes. It appears to not save the language settings to disk meaning that I get meanings of words in different languages even after I've disabled the rest. and also it does not save bookmarked articles to disk. Also, in the dark theme the kana representstion of the words is not bright enough to read.

This is a really great resource for learning Japanese. I think it could be even better if users could import or choose their own Japanese documents/texts/websites to be used with the features of being able to view definitions. It would also be nice to see more entertainment based content such as short stories/light novels etc. Overall, this is a very well designed app!

The app is very useful to improve your Japanese, but it has quite a few glitches and shortcomings. The bookmarking option doesn't work, there's no search option, and often the app crashes if you scroll down to find articles from a few days ago. If the developers fixed these issues, it would be a 5 stars, very handy app

Every update it runs worse. I send them emails to fix it and they said I just needed to reinstall so I did and it still crashes within 10 seconds. I'm on Samsung galaxy 9 too so this shouldn't be a problem. I've had problems on my android tablet and Apple tablet as well. So they really need to fix this app. I like the app but I haven't been able to use it in months. And I paid for it.

Tangoristo is a wonderful app for reading and learning. I highly recommend it. I'm currently using an old version (2.3.1) as I dislike the new redesign and noticed some mistakes in vocab in 3.0.1 (mistaking おおぜい and たいせい, both use the same Kanji but the mistake was not present in 2.3.1). The redesign compared to 2.3.1 feels tacky and less intuitive. I'd love to give this app 5 stars, but until the mistake issue is fixed, I cannot. Perhaps an option to return to the old design as well.

This is a really great app. I wish the audio skip/rewind/forward buttons skipped a shorter period of time, though (perhaps four seconds or so), because when I try to use it for shadowing I end up wasting a lot of time when I try to repeat problem sections. The only way I can rewind goes back too far.

This is the perfect Japanese study app for me. I find it hard to study vocabulary or kanji in isolation, but this app allows me to use the language in a realistic setting and see words in context. It is really well done. It's nice that it classifies words by JLPT level, and the review is just awesome. It lets me memorize the words it actually come up and practice, rather than arbitrary words. I highly recommend!

I really like the app but this new update not so much.. Some features I liked and found useful are gone and settings seem more limited. I liked how there was a way to tap on words to make furigana appear, then tap again to see meaning. The voice feature where text would be read was also nice. Design was also a bit better before. I still really like the app, it's helpful. But it was better before in my opinion.

I'm having the same issue as Raptor M, below. Nothing within the app loads. No articles, text analysis is down, it's just empty. The app is great when it works. Good selection of reading material for all levels; the custom text analysis is a dream... but until this bug is fixed it's useless.

Would really appreciate if the developer could update users on the app's current status, longer term viability or the difficulties that he is having. If he's not able to allocate the resources to maintain it, he should explore ways to get it up and running by other parties who are able to offer a helping hand. Otherwise his useful creation is likely to go to waste. Surely someone out there will be kind enough to carry on with his work. Hope you're doing well Javier !

The app is great for reading practice and overall not a bad product. The functions to show or hide furigana are awesome and pressing the words will bring up a definition and reading. The readings however, need some work. I often find the words' intonation to be completely off, like unreasonably so, which could be confusing learners.

Great app for learning japanese but the bookmark section lacks features. 1) Removing bookmarked vocabs is really annoying since you have to click on each one individually to delete it. I usually just clear the app data in the android settings to remove all bookmarks but thats not very convenient. 2) I can export bookmarks as a text file but not as an Anki deck. It would be really nice to see that feature get added in the near future.

There is so much to this app! It uses short news stories, gives the list of words used in a story with explanations and translations to multiple languages. You can quiz yourself on those words. You can also translate the whole story in google translate by pushing on a single button. It's a great app to learn to read in Japanese.

The last update cleared the existing vocabulary list I'd already built up. It was also disappointing to have the audio play back removed in the built in dictionary so I can no longer check pronunciation through the vocabulary list. Edit: thanks for the response Javier. Although I can live with an empty vocabulary list, I do hope you'll reintroduce the audio play back words from the dictionary page in the future.

This is the single best app to learn and read some real japanese. Not the mostly over simplified "foreigner" japanese other apps provide. Real articles, great translations in demand, voice to read everything out to you, review for your vocabulary and regular updates on new articles. You can even export vocabulary to Anki. 10/10 wish i found it sooner!

This app is good but needs a little work before I give it 5 stars. It constantly says text to speech engine stopped working and some of the translations are incorrect. I'm reading an article about universities and it says いるか which it translates to Dolphin but that makes absolutely no sense in the context of the sentence or the article. Fix these things and I'll give it 5 stars.

I really like and use this app literally everyday to study Japanese, but with this new update I find myself having to adjust the preferences everytime I happen to close and open the app again. I hope it could be fixed. Not sure if others are experiencing the same issue. Edit: Actually read the suggestion to reinstall the app and my issue is fixed. Thanks!

Great app but first problem is I can't seem to import my own articles (I was trying to add some articles about otome games ) but it didn't work also some of the letters don't appear like it would say "まし" and when I click it the voice says "ました" and the た is missing and other letters and words are missing..makes for very difficult and distracting reading please fix this .

I actually dreamed of this application when I became interested in Japanese. I am fond of the "get in the water" approach for learning languages, this application is largely about that. I am keen on learning the culture for seriously learning a language, this application is largely about that too. It looks and feels beautiful, rich, engaging. As with every such good application, it leaves you longing for improvements and more features.

Love the app, and love the sleek update. I don't know what I'd do without it. If you guys are open to suggestions, it'd be great to have custom colors for JLPT levels (and colors for non-JLPT and proper nouns). It would also be nice to be able to recategorize words, or exempt common words from underline/furigana, though I don't know if that would be feasible. Also the ability to mark articles as read for easy parsing would be fantastic. All in all, 5/5 stars.

Mil. B. Jul 12, 2019

The app was great before the update, its still good now but I lost the ability to do flashcards and quizzes, which is a big loss for me. Also, some of the translations seem a little questionable, and i can't click every word like i could before.

A. G. u. Oct 27, 2018

pretty good, but some texts are analyzed erroneously so some words are split up, affecting the dictionary functionality. also heats up my phone quite a lot, uses a lot of power for seemingly no reason. could be ads, could be poor programming.

Ala. W. Jul 20, 2019

I love this app. I get to practice reading Japanese without the stress of having to go to another app to look up words I don't understand. I like the vocab bookmark feature although I haven't made much use of it. Sometimes names aren't recognized and I do have to search Google. I wish I could get a notification when new articles are added because I feel I am wasting time check back frequently. Also, I'd love to be able to mark articles as read.

Man. P. Jan 8, 2022

The app is completely inoperative. No articles can be displayed, no updates are released. The developer should remove the app from the store, since it has ZERO use. Use Easy Japanese, similar app, but still gets supported and first and foremost WORKS.
