TaoteChing Chinese & English

The Tao Te Ching original text with translation by modern Chinese and English translation. The Tao Te Ching, Daodejing or Dao De Jing (道德經: 道 dào "way"; 德 dé "virtue"; 經 jīng "classic" or "text"), also simply referred to as the Laozi, is a Chinese classic text. According to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the sage Laozi (or Lao Tzu, "Old Master"), a record-keeper at the Zhou dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. The text's true authorship and date of composition or compilation are still debated,[3] although the oldest excavated text dates back to the late 4th century BC.The text is fundamental to both philosophical and religious Taoism (Daojia, Chinese: 道家, Pinyin: Dàojiā; Daojiao, Chinese: 道教, Pinyin: Dàojiào) and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, and is amongst the most translated works in world literature. The Wade–Giles romanization "Tao Te Ching" dates back to early English transliterations in the late 19th century; its influence can be seen in words and phrases that have become well-established in English. "Daodejing" is the pinyin romanization.

One star because I would not recommend this translation. To preface, I translated the Tao Te Ching in 2009-11, using the six ancient manuscripts, the MDBG Chinese-English dictionary and Zhongwen's character-by-character Tao Te Ching. I do periodic revisions: 2013, 2017, 2020. A translation is only as good as the paradigm of the translator. Doing your own translation is a profound meditative exercise. I recommend it. Then you'll know what each poem actually says. You may be surprised!

Forced you to do a rating and even after I did it, it forced me to do it again and wouldn't let me go on. Don't bother with this app.

Simple, what I'd hoped to find

I love the in-depth translation of the Mandarin, it's much better than the "dumbed down" versions commonly available. If it had share or highlight text options, this would easily be a "5" review.

This app was great until the audio stopped working. Can you please fix it? I'd appreciate it very much.

Lin Yutang's translation gives the richest meaning of the many translations I've read. Very nice app too. I would like a paid version, so that I don't have to look at the distracting adds. It would also be nice to have the bottom navigation part and the table of contents turn grey like the rest in night mode. Thanks for offering such an important translation! BTW, there are misprints in #4-line10, 7.3, 8.8, 23.6, 33.6. & 39.18. I've read through #40.

Very good job guys ! I like the introduction and how the text in Chinese Language is there as well as a very good translation into Enlish Language! I like the random chapter button too. I learn a lot from the ancient Chinese classic Tao Te Ching. Thank you Lao Tzu!

This app is truly excellent. It's well organized easy to search through. The English translation is great and it has the Chinese and pinyin for Chinese language learners, too! Love it!

Very usable, readable and functional. A little more artsy (drawings, photos) and I think it would make 5 stars.

though the fact that the index is only in Chinese is very limiting. Likewise the fact that pages open in Chinese by default and the display - after an additional click - is of bilingual texts is also limiting. Not a keeper for me, which is a pity as, as I say, the design is good and the translation is one of the best. With some preferences to change viewing options this would be excellent.
