Near perfection educationally yet fun. Very easy to navigate and get right into. Simple yet challenging. Only complaint thus far is the "Th" sound is incorrect. Unsure if there are any others like this but some aren't super clear and this makes the learning experience confusing. Please look into this and keep creating 🙏 add more mini games as well 💯
Getting my 5 year old, reception class child to do any reading has been an up hill struggle. In 6 months she has learned 2 sets of keywords. In just one day of playing (pretty much non stop) with this app, she has learned her 3rd set of key words. Luck to an extent that it happened to focus on those key words, but up until today she steadfastly refused to read any sentences. Today I heard her reading several sentences. Love it. So many different kinds of games it just keeps her attention.
3 of my kids have used Teach Your Monster to Read and LOVED it. It is so fun and just the right amount of challenging to help them learn their letters and practice what we're learning at home. Sometimes the English accent throws them off a bit, but all the beginning sounds are clear and easy for them to understand. The rest they just catch onto after a while. My youngest is now using Teach Your Monster Numbers and it is amazing! So great for young learners and is as fun as always. I recommend this to everyone I know.
My children (age 4 and 7) love this and ask to play it! Which is great. They are certainly learning as they do. I don't like that, after paying for it, I can't transfer the app to another device. If my child uninstalls it (one did), that's another $5 I must pay to put it back (I didn't/won't). It's not account based, it's per download
Reinforces bad habits. Our 6 year old is trilingual but struggles mightily with reading English. We were hoping this app would help. But there's no negative consequences for getting wrong answers, so she's not reading or sounding anything out. She just guesses until she finds the right word. I highly recommend playing the game together with your child to make sure they're getting out of it what they're supposed to. Which, unfortunately, defeats the purpose of self-guided study apps.
Love the idea of this game/app however I have 2 big complaints. (Issue 1.) I keep changing my child's level back to 1, yet after a few minutes of playing the game automatically resets back into level 2 where she left off and is too difficult. Reset over 5 times and now I've given up. (Issue 2.) There isn't a "repeat" button. My child doesn't catch the directions perfectly every time and there isn't a button to have it repeat what it wants her to do so she ends up guessing or asking for help on EVERY SINGLE ACTIVITY.
This app is amazing. After some abortive attempts at teaching my 5 year old to read at home, she started this game and is now playing it obsessively. It's exactly at the right level for her. She knew letter sounds and was beginning to be able to recognise them in words, but only very occasionally tried reading an unfamiliar word. Now she's had a huge boost in confidence and ability, and recently wrote by herself a 'shopping list' of all her favourite items, completely bonkers spelling but absolutely phonetic (so she hadn't copied the words). She finds reading the longer sentences hard (actually doesn't do it, to be honest), but the app is really forgiving with this and there is always enough positive reinforcement to keep going even when you don't get words right first time. The only comment I have is that we'd like a Scottish version! Some 2-letter sounds only work with an English accent, and I found some of the 'er, ir' sounds really hard to distinguish, so I'm not sure what she's learning there!
A great game to teach and learn to read in English. Absolutely engaging and fun for kids. A little too much talking of the narrator and too long and repetetive instructions, especially in the second and third games. Kids sometimes get tired and want to skip the instructions (because they learn them by heart in the first game), but it's impossible. On average the game is brilliant!
Don't recommend app for US readers!!!!! This app is phenomenal, however it makes for an incredibly frustrated kindergartener from the US. The accent/ word/ letter sounds don't match up with US articulation. For example, "the" is pronounced "zuh" on the app. There are many other sounds and words that don't match up to how we pronounce in the states.
All three of my children absolutely love this app! They're used to playing it on a laptop at home. This makes it more convenient to be played anywhere we go. My oldest has eye teaming issues that make traditional learning to read programs difficult, my middle child has sensory issues that make traditional learning settings stressful, and my youngest can't sit still at all LOL. This game and app have made learning to read easier and enjoyable for all my children. They have a blast with it!
I downloaded this when it was free and have recommended it to friends. The first level was basic sounds and was too easy for my 4 year old. The second level moves very quickly through the different sound groups. I think the amount of words in the sentence increases too quickly as my daughter could sound out the words but got scared at sentences of more than 4 words. She loves monsters, so when she got to a sticking point we restarted. Learning without realising. th sound is NOT clear though,
this app started out great but it keeps freezing with a rainbow across the screen half the time. I've kept all apps cleared off when using this like suggested in another review, I've also restarted my phone twice. the only way to keep playing is to clear the app and reopen it, the music keeps playing if you don't. my four year old loves the game but is frustrated with the freezing.
Hi guys, I'm having a similar problem with the freezing of the game. On the basic setting, second monster in 3rd letter the game freezes after second lot of ducks rounded up. Also on the flower jump game this happens on the same point (monster 2, 3rd level, second successful letter). Can't progress although haven't tried the rocket game. Game freezes with the rainbow across the screen but before the celebrating monster appears. Please could you help? Updated: Many thanks all resolved for us. 👍
It's very difficult for my little to navigate on her own. She usually understands what she needs to do but the game logistics make it bet difficult for her to select the correct letter or sound. I think the games and activities within the game are too complicated for the age range. It needs to be simplified in order for the littles to be able to work it all by themselves.
My daughter enjoys the monsters and go thru the rehlms that are there. She is learning her site words, I in a way wish that as much as they move forward, they could also go back and redo some of the lessons. We want to reinforce those lessons. She is getting her sight words which is very helpful. I would like to also see how we can improve the sounding out of words. sometimes the words aren't clear and it even confuses me. But overall, i would recommend this greatly for any parent. Its fun for both boys and girls and she still asks to play it. i try to get her to play at least once a week but some days she will spend 2 hours on it playing.
Bit samey. It's a good app but it's the same games over and over with the same dialogue. There are other reading apps that emphasise blending more and others which change with the skill of the player. This latter option would be useful because some of the games are too difficult for a really young child to work out but the options remain static so I have to assist if she chooses the building block game for instance.
We started it with my granddaughter when she was 5 yrs old to actually help with her speech. We found because of the British/English accent (we are in western Canada) there were challenges at times to understand but it worked better with headphones to cut any outside noise. We use it both the computer version and the app version and have never had any problem with it freezing or not working. She is enjoying it more now than when we first started, her favourite part is choosing the outfits for her monster and catching trickies
It's a really great app, but although my child can read a lot, he's only 3 and doesn't have the dexterity with using a tablet to be able to time his taps to jump to get stars and chase Trickys etc, but he'll get better. He's also begun to find it quite repetitive, even though he's collected loads of 'Trickys', so we haven't used it for a few months. We love the narrator and the graphics, buying our Monster new clothes and do really like the game. I think there should be more side-games.
Experience, and Graphics are Good! But I found a glitch, I don't remember what to do while it happened so can you fix anything that is weird on controlling the app? But as always I like playing it and the "th" sound scares me, and even on high volume. Can you fix those? And while I play when I get the treasure on the edge of the map, it floats randomly, PLEASE FIX!
My four year old loves this game. I assume she must be more than half way through it at this point and it is definitely improving her reading skills. It gives her confidence. my only complaints are: the narrator is not loud enough even when my phone is on high and an option for a narrator with an American accent would be good as she sometimes doesn't know what word they're saying. Overall VERY engaging and worth the $5 one time fee. Better than ABC Mouse in my opinion.
Kids LOVE it! It's so fun to play my kids don't realize they're learning. It's very kid friendly with easy controls and great graphics. They really like earning prizes for their monster. The mini games keep them engaged without burnout. It progresses smoothly so no big jumps in ability which helps keep the kids from getting frustrated. It's not timed so kids can work at their own pace until they've mastered a sound. Overall we LOVE Teach Your Monster to Read!
My son has just started on his reading journey. We've tried a few other apps to spark interest but they were a bit of a flop for him. Teach your monster to read is a hit. He's even opened some of his picture books to have a flip through himself. I would recommend this app to anyone in the same boat. Once he realises he can read for himself I don't think there will be any stopping him!
We've just finished the journey after 18~ months of play. Started when she was 4 and a half, and we love playing through a planet every 2nd or 3rd evening. She has really grown with this and she's ahead in her class. Her "monster needs feeding" every day or two, so it's easy to get back into. Earning stars through learning to purchase little outfits is a great motivator. One minor complaint however, the font is very small inside the little blue books - can it be made larger somehow?
It's great to come across a game that's British and my daughter (4) finds engaging. I love the idea of a monster on the mission, selecting prizes, the illustrations and personalising the monster... However I find it a little fast paced, 1 letter you select 1 game that they consolidate 3x (twice for the same letter and once for another) and then that level is complete. I'd love for 1 letter, 2 games so consolidated 6x. I also don't like the font used, my daughter thought a G was a C.
My son loves this game, however, it freezes quite frequently after completing the duck game and the rocket game, which causes him to throw the tablet across the room out of frustration. Also, the flower game speed is way too fast for him to follow and he gets upset when he cannot get the monster to travel up the path when necessary. NOT GOOD! He is not coordinated enough to use a mouse on a computer yet, so that is not an option.
Exceptional app!! My son is on the spectrum and is mostly nonverbal. He loves this. He repeats the sounds, is able to associate the letters to the sounds. Has a little difficulty on getting the ducks in the lake (using a mouse on Android box). He almost has the order of letters to drop on the spaceship board. Repetition and a little help work great. Very pleased with his improvement over a short time. Impressed that backing out of the app doesn't lose progress. He gets extremely excited playing.
