Ted (Text Editor)

Ted is an Open Source, Ad-free, lightweight text editor, meant as a Notepad application, and not meant to edit big files.
You can create new text file, open existing files and of course save them. You can also display line numbers and open recent files. You can also search for text inside the opened file.

The application source code can be found and forked on GitHub (https://github.com/xgouchet/Ted)

I like this. It has good support for unicode characters. My only issue is that when transferring txt files I've made on here to my Windows PC, line breaks don't show up, and have to be added manually, which is a real pain for long documents. I changed the end-of-line setting to Windows, but the problem still persists.

GREAT text editor. I don't do anything complex with this app, but i don't need to on a daily basis. This app loads quickly, saves quickly, and has everything I need for note-taking. I can import PDF files, modify them, then save them, all without any complications. There's no bloat, ads, or unnecessary permissions, and security? No fears there either.

Ad free. Simple text editor. My issues, doesn't always open a saved file... yet recent file will open if it was a resent file. Weird. And I've lost files after lengthy typing. (Auto save... ACK. Not done. ) But with those issues, it's free and fairly reliable. Just remember to save your work... ooh yeah.. no SD access. No ridiculous permissions. No bloat. Have used this app quiet a while. Overall still useful.

For some reason my Android 5.1 has no problem with the app. However, on my new Android 11 phone the app doesn't even show up in Play Store. I tried sharing the app my text message, but Android 11 give me a "Try Again" error. Tried to "send" the app and it doesn't show up on the send list.

App used to be a superior text editor back when I was using Gingerbread to recover contact info from a file nothing else could open (worked perfectly for opening overly large files and search for specific test wothout having to scroll thri the whole file to find it!), but app has not been updated since 2012 and is not supported on Android Pie (it will load, but only gives a single line window to look at text with).

It's 2019 and it's still hard to find a decent text editor on Android that doesn't nickel and dime you and lets you load/save directly to folders you can access from your desktop. Just stumbled upon this old app, and despite a few issues here and there I am very pleased with it.

It's simply designed and easy to use. I like the default file feature. It hasn't been updated in years but it still works correctly mostly. The only problem is I can't navigate to my microSD, just the onboard drive.

Excellent, straightforward text editor. Can save files in txt format so it's great for stuff I need to move from phone to PC or vice versa. It's also a super tiny install, barely a blip in my phone's storage.

The absolute last word in Txt document apps in Google's Play Store... Feature rich (yet simple - as every Txt editor should be) free, and if that wasn't good enough, it contains no ads either! And yes, it handles Txt format documents correctly (this really should go without saying, but you'd be surprised!). Will Xavier Gouchet please stand up so he can receive a round of applause!

Failed exit on power failure. I expected to lose current work, I did not expect for it to zero the file and write over the existing, saved file (eliminating it). Last update 2012, probably won't get looked at. Need to find a current fork, or lightweight alternative. Doesn't handle carriage return / new lines for cut-n-paste into SSH corrextly (nor can I find an option to change it). Recent files are limited, and old options fall off, ymmv/minor nit/choices have to be made.

I like it! It is simple, with no frills or distractions. I can take notes which are stored on my phone -- no complication of 'the cloud'. No logins, no passwords, fewer privacy concerns.

Used to be fantastic. Unfortunately when my phone (S10+) updated to Android 10 copy and pasting broke almost entirely. I can copy and paste single words but can't do the selection drag to select paragraphs it just moves the choice prompt

Handle wrapping in settings + choice of themes, font type and size... Seems free of trackers. Would be nice to add a feature to enable cutting words for wrapping. Still, a big thank you for this app.

I just wanted simple app to occasionally write some text notes. And all went fine, but today I opened my file and found that all words in my native language were replaced with useless abracadabra. It's the matter of encoding I suppose, but my notes are lost now. So never rely on this if you have to write down some important things. It's just a toy, not useful app.

This doesn't auto wrap text, therefore it's impossible to see a text file on screen unless each line is very short. Also, it won't open some TXT files.

Can't write anything in this app, can only scroll up and down. It starts with the keyboard open but once removed it can't be brought back. But with or without the keyboard can't write anything. Not very useful.

Perhaps I'm being unreasonable, but I do expect a text editor to be able to open a text file. This text editor does not open text files - at least on on my Samsung tablets. It's of no use to me.

Perfect no-balony text editor. Works perfectly, no bloat, no advertising or promotions.

Good editor, limited theme choice but Matrix theme looks really nice. Recent file list is handy. Can't save to SD card. Works with a full keyboard but not many shortcuts.

This is EXACTLY the quick, simple, and clean text editor I was looking for! Thank you. I know it's old, but I've only been using it for a few weeks, and I'd happily give you the price of a coffee for this.

Useful, the biggest flaws are: - autosave not enabled by default (crucial with android not holding memory of suspended tasks) - textbox in landscape mode (different font, lines not numbered)

I've loved this for years, but why is that I type: ted text editor xavier gouchet into the search query in Play Store and it can't find it, but instead I have to follow a link on GitHub?

Joe. K. Mar 17, 2019

Line numbers should not count wrapped lines as more than one line. Only increment the line number when a "\n" (new line) character is found. Please fix this; it's unacceptable.

Bil. L. Mar 20, 2020

Simple editor on my android so I don't expect major features. My biggest problem is finding a simple Help that describes such things as Find and Replace.

Kev. E. Mar 13, 2019

Simple and easy to use. Does what I need without the bloatware and is reliable.

Pra. U. Mar 3, 2019

It cannot open files from the SD card. If developers add this functionality it will be a great App. 03Mar19.

Pau. E. Dec 13, 2018

Good little text editor. Only gripe is that it doesn't allow use of sd card.

Dam. W. Jan 18, 2019

Nice and elegant but doesn't accept tabs from my physical keyboard, making it useless for programming. So sadly I had to uninstall.

I like this editor. It has no special permissions and just does what it's meant to do: edit documents.
