Test Your Hearing

Test different aspects of your hearing with this application. Two easy and precise tests are presented to test frequency range and frequency differentiation.
A frequency range test presents 25 tones, and asks whether you can hear them. From this, it tells you your highest and lowest audible frequencies, your "hearing age", and a fun animal that represents your hearing abilities.

A frequency differentiation test presents 25 tone pairs, and asks if you can hear a difference. The results tell you what frequencies you can differentiate over the hearing spectrum and suggests an instrument based on your answers.

Please take care with this application by reading instructions as they are presented. When the test is done, read about the results, and try each ear individually!

I would give this app 0 stars if I could. I downloaded it for my sister because she was having trouble hearing but we dont have enough money to go to the doctor to get her checked out. This stinking app said that she could here like a mouse. She can barley here the TV when it's volume is at its highest. This app is ridiculous. I would advise you not 2 get it.

Seems to work fine. The test results appear to be about the same as the one that I had done 4 days ago by a professional testing center. I do have hearing loss and knowing where I was already helped with evaluating this app. It would be nice if the app could generate a graph that I can send to the printer.

Make sure you have a decent pair of headphones that reproduce the sounds for more accurate results. I had to turn up the volume on several in order to hear the tone. My range was 17.5Hz to just above 15kHz. I'm sure the lowest of tones was more feel but my ear buds were able to put something out so that was cool.

I used my bose noise canceling headphones, and this app worked great. The external speaker cannot produce the low tones for that. I had to redo the test because I said I was hearing the tones, but really I was hearing a popping sound at the beginning and end of the tone. You may want to redo the low tones to fix that. Also, it would be nice to test individual ears. I know my left hears better than the right.

I have mild hearing loss and have been tested at doc with basically the same results as this test. Heard from experts that untreated hearing loss can result in early onset dementia and in some cases even Alzheimers, so if you get poor results here, be sure to get to doc for a proper checkup.

Tried this app first without headphones in normal room and results were disappointing. Then put in ear buds and retook in quiet room. Results consistent with my own professional medical assessment. Hearing of a ferret, very sensitive to noise. Recommend this app, but usual caveats apply: YMMV, and this is for fun, not clinical findings. If concerned about hearing, get professional testing.

I have been tested by an ENT and I have moderate hearing loss on high frequencies. This test says my hearing is equivalent to an 18 year old. I DJ'ed for 10 plus years, I did use better headphones for this test Sony MDR-V700 maybe if I was using skull candy ear buds my test results would be worse.

It's important to remember that the test can only validate that you can hear within the constraints of the frequency range of your hardware. When I used a good set of ear buds, I was able to hear better than when I used a cheap set. The results were quite consistent when I did the test at different times, with the same earbuds. Thanks for letting me determine where my hearing is faulty without going to a doctor!

For a long while I have wondered how my hearing had been affected by years of Rock&Roll concerts, and spacing-out in my basement listening to albums. This let me know that since my kids don't speak in frequencies a dog can't hear it IS them.

Surprisingly thorough test app. I was impressed that my first go round with the tests were quite accurate. In fact, it said that my hearing age was 60-70, I just turned 59 and I have seen that some frequencies are now harder to pick up on. The tests reflected this quite correctly! As for my instrument... it said keyboard. I am, in fact, an organist. Pretty darned good, I'd say!

First of all I am completely deaf in my left ear and have limited hearing in my right ear. This test, which I got for a laugh and just to see if they could pick up my deafness, said my hearing is as good as an ox, I've got no idea what that means. It does not do the test in each ear separately so the results are based on both ears. If your worried about your hearing then go to the doctors and ask for a proper hearing test

It tests the frequency range of your hearing with a decent test protocol, but you're allowed to turn up the volume. It would be nice to see an audiogram, i.e., the threshold of hearing compared to an 'average' person. I understand that differences between headphones make it hard to do this with 3 dB accuracy, but since the normal threshold varies by 60 dB at the low end and 25 dB at the high end of the spectrum, it some indication would still be possible. Likewise, with the frequency differentiation test, it would be nice to see some statistics to compare against others, rather than "drummer, keyboard, singer".

I figured my hearing was off, but I didn't think it was quite so poor as that! Granted I won't take this as a professional result, but it does seem to be a clear indication that a check-up is due. I really like the way this app is designed; I've had a provincial hearing test done many years ago and the procedure was very similar. An excellent app and great place to start if you think your hearing is impaired.

Well if you are just looking to waste 5 min on a novelty then by all means try this app out. The app didn't even come close to anything accurate. According to the results I have "the hearing of a (30-35) year old, great hearing, I can hear like an elephant ." Well let's see I'm 45 have 65% loss in 1 ear and 45% in the other. I have been wearing hearing aids for 10 years. I took the test without my hearing aids so the results are WAY off. Don't waste your time.

Seemed like a pretty sophisticated test for a phone/tablet app, but I have not (yet) had my ears professionally tested, so I have nothing to compare this to. I do have a scientific background, so I can imagine what a hearing test should entail, and this seemed to be better than I expected.

Good app. Rating 4 stars so developer has will to do it even better. Test is good, just results I found difficult to read. Its hard to sort sentences with word "not" or without. Could do results with less text. Keep on.

Its a cool app but often when a tone is played I can very clearly hear static and can't hear the tone that should be playing. I need to find out the operating range of my earbuds (which are good quality) but if the static could be drastically reduced then that would make this app much better.

Not as good as a Hearing booth ,Good indicator when you need. The prose. With my hearing aids I hear like a Chicken may be time for me to go get fitted for new ones Bennett three years.

While this app cannot replace a diagnosis by a trained professional, it does a great job of estimating your hearing frequency range and frequency differentiation. Use a good headphone/earphone and in a quiet place for better accuracy. Also test each ear separately.

I suffer from tinnitus and sometimes need subtitles on tv as the dr/ear specialist says I have nothing wrong with hearing and to just "live with it".. I am 24... This each time always says I have the hearing of a 60 year old in my bad ear. And 24-30 year old on good ear. I belive this more then my Dr.

A. G. u. Aug 27, 2012

I used this to test my sound system in my car to make sure i had it fully tuned from 20hz to 17khz. The only thing that would make it perfect is the ability to play the tones on demand, rather than a randomized test. PS-this is almost identical to the test they use for military enlistment at meps.thx!

A. G. u. Jul 28, 2012

With what I trend to realize about my hearing. I was able to test both and each each ear individually, I knew my left ear didn't hear to well and this app verified and gave specific results, frequencies and such. Recommended, you'll know if you need to see your Doc.

Bro. P. Jun 7, 2013

Playback volume can be changed during test which is ok but not accounted for in results. Also, results page, while detailed, cannot be saved for review or analysis. Results shown in (random) frequency order so assessing your loss pattern is difficult.

Har. H. A. Mar 25, 2015

The audio test works well, once you get past unclear request about repeating the sound ("yes", if you did not hear it. The sound is repeated with increased volume), and continuing with the test ("yes"). It is not clear if the volume can (or should be) adjusted, once the mid-range test tone at the start of the test is heard. There probably should be a mid-range frequency test tone to set the volume before the start of the test. The results of the test and "equivalent age were consistent with what I know from professional hearing tests. For the difference tone test, the tone is played from 2 seconds, then for an additional 2 seconds where the pitch may be increased (answer yes) or may not be increased (answer no). Occasionally no sound is played. The correct answer is "no sound heard". If the test subject answers "yes", then it is a false detection. Too many false detections invalidate the test. The test does not appear to measure the volume required to make a detection. Given the price ($0) this is a very interesting illustration of a real hearing test, but no substitute. hha

I think this is an interesting idea but this app is ridiculous. Humans hear between 20 and 20,000 Hz with absolutely perfect hearing. The high frequencies drop as we age. It is extremely doubtful that many of us beyond the age of 16 or so can still hear this way. It would be more appropriate to test 250-8000 Hz. Also, to whomever posted that he had his hearing tested by an ENT, I seriously doubt that. The reimbursement is too poor for a physician to do that.

Sha. S. Nov 16, 2016

I push the button to start and no sound comes out and all the other buttons become disabled. Very disappointing.

Gil. O. Nov 23, 2013

This is a nice app that works great with the excellent headphones supplied with the phone. It got my hearing age pretty well. It would be great if this app after some sort of calibration could supply a graph indicating the hearing level in db as a function of the frequency.

I work at a chicken farm and it's very loud there. I recently came home with a ringing in my left ear and sometimes it sounds like I have water in it. This test reassured my hearing isn't shot in that ear. Thank you
