The Birthday (IceBlink RPG)

The Birthday (an IceBlink Engine RPG)
This is an adventure module originally written (by Zach Holbrook) for Obsidian’s first Neverwinter Nights 2 contest (theme: “Grimm’s Fairy Tales”). Converted to the Android version of the IceBlink RPG Engine.

Zach has won numerous awards and accolades for his NWN2 modules (The Birthday and Harp & Chrysanthemum) including Module of the Year 2007, Reviewers Award, Obsidian Contest Winner (2nd), Golden Dragon Award, and two Hall of Fame awards.

This is the fourth adventure module converted for the IceBlink Engine Android Version (The Raventhal, Lanterna and Red Carnival are also available on Google Play).

Story, music and some artwork by Zach HolbrookCoding and some artwork by slowdive_fanIceBlink Engine and port to Android by slowdive_fan (me)

Features:
- designed for phones, but scales well on tablets
- FREE, NO ads and NO in-app purchase stuff.
- turn-based combat similar in style to the SSI Gold Box games.
- great RPG story telling conversation system.
- multiple very different endings.
- single player RPG (you control all party members) game.
- solo adventure, no companions in this module.
- three races, four classes and many spells to choose from.
- multiple saves available (save often).
- lots of items to find and wield with unique names and awesome descriptions (back stories).
- this is a short story (1-3 hours) so, yes, it is short. It was designed for the NWN2 contest and was required to be short.

Progress Reporting Feature:A fun new way to share your play through experience with others. There is a toggle button on the main map screen labeled "PR" (bottom right toggle button). Pressing this button will turn Progress Reporting on and off. If you do not wish to share your play through experience, no problem, just turn off Progress Reporting. If you do wish to share, leave the "PR" button on. If Progress Reporting is on, then at a number of milestone events, it will send your party's current stats to our Google Analytics Dashboard. I will post the listings of Progress Reports to our forums (see our website link below) for others to share in the experience. No personally identifiable information is collected, just information about your party. The tag that will separate your Progress Report from others is your main PC's name. We are excited to see how others are enjoying our adventure stories so we hope you enjoy this new feature as well.

The Birthday Adventure Module Description by Zach Holbrook:"OVERVIEW: This is a mod written for Obsidian’s first NWN2 contest (theme: “Grimm’s Fairy Tales”). It is a medium-magic, high-wonder adventure, as befits a story adapted from a fairy tale. But which one? You'll have to find out!

SYNOPSIS (no spoilers): Today is a festive day in the small village called Schafberg. A talented foundling, raised by a shepherd and his wife on a nearby farm, has come of age, and now the young paragon's adoptive parents have brought their ward to town to speak to the Matron. Before Schafberg can rightly celebrate the birthday, a coming-of-age tradition known as "the birthday errand" must be honored, and the Matron reveals what that errand is to be."

The Birthday was originally Created by Zach Holbrook for the Neverwinter Nights 2 Obsidian "Grimm's Fairy Tales" Module Contest. I converted the module (with Zach's permission) to the Android version of the IceBlink Engine (IB). I ported the IB engine (original engine and toolset I created for the PC) to Android and converted The Raventhal, Lanterna
- The Exile, Red Carnival and now The Birthday adventure modules from the PC versions to Android. The IceBlink Engine is inspired by some of my favorite cRPGs (many being old retro style RPGs) such as the SSI Gold Box Games, original Bard's Tale, Ultima, and the Infinity Engine games (like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale) and my 6+ years of experience with building adventure modules in Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2.

This one's a little more demanding though no less pleasant. I suggest having played another of these before attempting (as you need to be comfortable managing resources and class strengths/weaknesses). A good game with a nice storyline

There's a fine line between nostalgia and disgust, and this installment crossed it, doubled back, and then puked like a fire hydrant. Everything is absolutely horrible. And I mean EVERY SINGLE THING. This app was hashed in a weekend as an easy cash cow. Absolutely terrible. Download it at your peril, or if you want to see how NOT to do it.

Great game. It would be awesome if it were longer, but it is was still really great despite how short it was. Amazing storyline, with an unexpected twist toward the end. The combat wasn't too easy, nor was it overly difficult. It also had a nice amount of things to do that weren't for the main storyline especially considering how short it was. I really loved how many different choices you could make with every significant dialogue. I would recommend it if you like rpgs at all.

A lot of time devoted to storytelling with classic RPG gameplay, as has been the case with all Bree Arts games so far. The story is heavily influenced by Romanian and European fairy tales, for an even older-school feel.

This scenario is short and can be completed in an hour or two. One of our favorite aspects is that it starts your character (and you only get the one) with 1,000 XP, enough to level up a few times. This lets you experiment with the different character classes, which is great if you haven't played an IceBlink game before.

Loved the story! Especially that the ending changes with the decisions we make, in such a thrilling way. Very happy with the game, only wish it was longer, like I do for all of these games. This is the first time I've actually felt the need to rate a game. Worthy of 5 stars, imo. But I wish there were longer stories and that you could carry on your character into a second game, with the choices you made in the first. That would be AMAZING. Great work!

Changes must have been made since some of these reviews. I only died once and quickly beat the game.

Nice story, but when playing as a thief, tends to freeze in combat when stealthy, while some npc apparently can't figure out how to react during its turn. This forced me to finish the game in debugmode.

The game was too easy and too short with only two maps. But fun none the less. Thank you

Nice game. Typical old school RPG. Short but that was expected, the description explains why. The movement and battle system could use some improvement but it is not bad.

Shorter than Raventhal, but no less amazing. Fantastic and well written story.

Enjoyed the game. I like the storyline. I also like that this game provided a place to rest. I don't know if the game could be won using a spell caster but haven't tried it. Didn't experience any bugs or problems when I played. Overall a nice retro playing experience for me.

At least this one gives you a chance, but could be better.. more enemies to level from, enemies with gold (my arrows went quite fast), music is cutting out between maps, and more chars would be fun :)

This is my second Iceblink RPG. Writing was good, combat was okay, just one character this time around. A little short.

when you play as a thief and you use his stealth trait in battle, some Unseelie Cavaliers stop doing anything and won't pass his turn to the next enemy like it usually does and the battle won't go any further, I helped you guys find a bug so could you please reply to my hearkenwold review P.S. big fan of your games

I personally loved it although the game's a bit unforgiving for wizards.Loved the story and that tiny twist in it along with the extensive dialogues.Although a bit small, everything has its end. :D

I love rpgs and there are very few with good story lines as well as entertaining game play however I have noticed that when stealthing as thief the enemies can't decide how to play their turn and it prevents the fights from progressing you could fix this by giving the AI a setting to skip their turn when they can't decide to move other than that I thoroughly enjoyed this game

The three little quests involved in this game would make an awesome add on to any game built on the Iceblink engine. Way to short as a stand alone unfortunately. Still gets 5 stars as I know the effort that goes into coding something like this.

I enjoyef Raventhal very much. Despite multiple times of trying to build the right character, it wad fun. Only issue is that all of them freeze, making some unplayable.

A little too easy though, but I liked the story. It was different.

It was great, the only downside is that there was not enough of it! Great game, kudos to the creators!

Gameplay is only worth an hour or so but it was a fun mini game with a good ending.
