The Breathing App

The Breathing App is inspired by resonance, the scientific name that describes what happens when our heart rate, heart rate variability, blood pressure, and brainwave function come into a coherent frequency. It occurs spontaneously when we breathe at a rate of five to seven breaths per minute (instead of our usual 15-18). It results in a calm, restful alertness and many other benefits.

About Resonance

The effects of resonance supports the innate ability of our body, nervous system, and emotions to restore themselves through the balancing of the complementary branches of our autonomic nervous system, which control our heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, respiration, and many other automatic functions of the body.

There have been hundreds of scientific studies performed on resonant breathing, which show a wide array of benefits, including reduction of inflammation, reduction of stress, improved sleep, improved resiliency, and strengthening of cardiovascular function.

How is it possible for one breathing technique to do so much? The answer lies within our nervous system. By breathing at resonance, we enter into an even balance between the two branches of our autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic (which moves us towards activity) and the parasympathetic, which moves us towards rest.

The sympathetic branch is our accelerator, and speeds us up. The parasympathetic is our braking system, which slows us down. We alternate between these two every second of the day, with each breath we take.

However, in our fact paced, information heavy world, we often lean towards acceleration. Spending just a few minutes consciously breathing sends signals of balance to our brain, telling us that we are ok, and brings us out from the part of our brain that makes us feel overwhelmed, into a state of calm. With resonant breathing, you learn how to apply your brake at will, rather than being sidelined by anxiety, distractedness, or excess stress.

Our world is very much in sympathetic overdrive: we are overly active, overly plugged in, and live in a world of both heated politics and climate. It’s important to learn to cool down, so that we can be as effective in our lives as possible, and conscious breathing is one of the best ways to do that. The Breathing App, by virtue of toning the vagus nerve, reduces inflammation, and induces a state of restful alertness and mental clarity.

Resonant breathing is like a stress reset button.

About the creators of the Breathing App

There is a brief pause after every 4 breaths. Only 1 count but it throws me off my rhythm every time. If you can get past that it's great. It does one thing well. Several speeds to choose from, guided by monotone sound or visual circle. No distracting music like other apps. No bell at the end to wake you up if that's why you use it. Unfortunately I am distracted by the pause every 4th breath so it doesn't work for me.

I've been using the app since September 2019 and it worked perfectly fine at first. In the last few months, a few minutes after I start the exercise the sound changes and there are two inhale/exhale sound playing but they are not synced together and I can't tell when to inhale and exhale. It's really bothersome. Also when I try to pause the exercise it doesn't work. Is there a fix that can be done? Edit: it worked! Changed my rating from 3 to 5 because this is the best app of its kind!

I use this app for one year now and I absolutely love the fact that I can regulate my central nervous system in just a few minutes, from wherever I am. I downloaded it after reading Eddie Stern's book "One Simple thing". I gave it only 4 stars because it has a bug, the timer does not work if the phone display shuts down. Because of this I always need to put a timer on my phone. Please fix this!

Brilliant! Quick to set up and no personal questions! I use it 3 times a day for vagus nerve stimulation. One touch starts the app: 5 seconds inhaling, then 5 seconds exhaling, for 5 minutes. I chose a silent, grey ball as my breath timer so that I can do it any time, anywhere (bus/park/hall). It's very relaxing. I set my phone to screen out after 10 mins, or I tap the screen as it fades . A great, free app!

Simple resonant breathing app. It is bare bones but effective at its goal of teaching resonant breathing. Watch the how to videos for adjusting the very few settings, basically the time and ratio of your inhale and exhale. It offers different audio cues. There are many other breathing or meditation apps for different results, this one is strictly for resonant breathing. No ads , not much else going on, just press play and off you go. I love the simplicity.

I found this app through Schuyler Grants 21 day yoga challenges. I totally love the app, simple, easy to use, ad free and doesn't overwhelm with options to choose from. Totally the biggest fan! One thing I've noticed, I'm using a Samsung Galaxy A70 and the set up guide didn't work for me - when I clicked on it nothing happened. the link to the quick start video didn't work for me either - youtube said video not found. Regardless, the app is simple enough to figure it out!

I was not able to find the sound as many other users. I had installed it and then removed few weeks ago. But I knew that a great sound has to be here! Today I've found it again, wrote to the developer, but then have decided to read reviews. I've discovered that the issue is common for many users and also thanks to those who wrote the solution: to swipe the screen. It could be very helpful if it was written on the 'info' page of the application. I'm happy with the App! Thank you very much!!!

This is a great app! I also suggest including the 4-7-8 breathing exercise (I found this through Andrew Weil, understand it is an ancient technique). Also I would like combining the sound tones with all of the visual options (some of us like the combination of visual and audible guidance - fluttering eyelids). Thank you for a wonderful app.

I watched the youtube video on how to use this app and either you've completely changed what the app does or somethings wrong because there is no welcome page, no choices as described in the video. I just realized I do not have the three screens on my app that allow to choose the amount of time, the ratio and the menu. Can anyone tell me why that is? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app and that didn't work. i have a galaxy s7. Never mind, I figured it out. You have to be smarter than the app. You obviously changed the app and you made it more difficult to figure out. Ok I'm done. :)

nice and simple app, easy to use and helpful. it would be better if it would keep the display of the phone on. for ex: if i want to do a 10 minute breathing i need to set up the display timeout of my phone to 10 minutes.

Brilliant app, for those who have no sound, you need to swipe left to until you get the picture of the night sky to get sound then it works perfect !! Gets you in the zone πŸ‘πŸ‘

Absolutely love this app. BUT, since switching to new phone I find that it sometimes stops randomly and secondly I used to be able to play continuously (beyond 30 minutes) but now that functionality no longer seems to work.

It is simple and effective. Those who are not getting sound swipe the screen to the left several time and you will come to a screen with some music for measuring the breath. Also, look up Eddie Stern breathing app on youtube and there is a lot of guidance there too.

You need to read the about section and then all becomes clear. Just swipe to the side to choose whether to have numbers, sounds or an expanding orb. Adjust time and lengths of inhales and exhales. No ads. Really relaxing and lovely. Recommended by a friend and now recommending to more friends! 5*

Not customizable whatsoever, besides the back drop. No menus or anything. It just counts to 4. I need a breathing exercise that has longer exhales for my anxiety, and this doesn't help. It gets a bonus star for simple design, though.

Ste. E. Oct 28, 2019

Should have been 5. Simple and does exactly what it should. However, the six second cycle on the sound screen skips 3 seconds every 5 cycles. 5 second cycle is fine. Apart from that I'd be more than happy to give 5 stars.

Chi. C. Oct 18, 2018

I love the idea of this and it is beautifully done. What I am seeking is the ability to add a 1 or 2 second pause in between inhaling and exhaling and to have a longer breathe setting. I feel even at the longest setting that I am pressured to inhale and exhale. Thank you for your efforts.

This app does exactly what it is meant to do. It is very simple and straightforward, no complicated stuff, exactly what I need. There's no adds, no notifications, nothing annoying or stressful. I love it.

I'm unable to get the audio cues to work. I can't use this app unless the audio works. galaxy s10 with android 10 i've tried with and without headphones bluetooth on/off i've swiped through all of the screens

Nice barebones app for coherent breathing. One big downside is that the breathing sound clicks around every 10 breaths or so, it should just be a non stop revolving of the same sound without clicks and resetting

I enjoy the calming, focusing role of the app. The music is very good. The ball, however does not gradually grow or shrink, it just pops to the big or small size. Moto X4.

And. T. May 17, 2020

It's a pretty bare bones app but it's extremely functional! It's a great way to teach yourself harmonic breathing and the skills are usable even if you don't want to fire up the app later on

Sur. P. May 20, 2022

I like this app alot. I have a hiatal hernia and erosive gastritis due to living in a stressful environment. The breathing exercises in this app helps me calm down, and actuvates the vagus nerve.

Bre. N. Dec 29, 2019

Very nice, calm visual to aid breathing. But it doesnt overide screen timeout so you cant just focus on breath because you need to tap the screen every few seconds to stop it going to screensaver.

Oks. B. Apr 2, 2022

The sound disappeared completely. I tried to reinstall the app and there is still no sound in the app

This is a great app. I did 4 mins of the breathing and lowered my lower BP from high 80s to 72. We just need to take the time to focus on our breathing and quiet our minds, listening to what our body is telling us. Overall a great app.

Developers attention. No sound on android. Tried it as a team activity for meditation but sound is not available for android but yes for iphone

I love this app!!! I have anxiety, so when I need to relax I just turn on the breathing app. My yoga teacher introduced me to this and I have loved it ever since. If you have anxiety or serious stress levels, I would totally recommend this!!!

Kai. H. Jan 13, 2019

simply amazing however, Would be a lot more beneficial if the total number of minutes are counted for accountability. I have students whom I would like to recommend once it counts the minutes like Lumosity app does.

Ild. R. Mar 17, 2019

Works brilliantly. The only suggestion I would have is to have an option of breathing ball and sound cue together for audio visual users.
