Before the new layout, the app worked well and gave me everything I needed. Now, the app takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute to even load. I get push notifications for breaking news, but the app just loads to the main page and the article is nowhere to be found. Old version worked way better. They needed to test this new one more before releasing it.
I like the new app overall but app seems to download the e-edition to internal memory. When the memory on the device fills up, the app stops loading, have to delete app and download again periodically. There needs to be an option to use a device's SD card and also to clear the memory of prior issues. Was taking up 900 MB of memory on phone, causing other apps to slow down as well.
I like to read the eEdition of the paper as I find the "regular" app and website content way too repetitive - same articles show up under multiple sections. It's buggy, however, depending on device. OK on my Pixel phone; lousy on Samsung Galaxy tablet - freezing up; not including the Xtra content normally included with the eEdition.
I get notifications for various news stories throughout the day. However, it is irritating when I click on the notification for a story I want to read, I am not taken to that story. Instead I'm taken to the app with no context. I have to scroll through to find the story I wanted to read. I'm about ready to turn off all notifications.
The old app was great; the update constantly crashes. I've reinstalled it twice but it still hangs on launch 90% of the time and when it does work, soon crashes mid article. I recommend the developers go back to the old app until they can properly beta test this app. Subscribers are not beta testers.
Extremely slow to load. Has much to be desired. Just installed on two different Android devices and app takes forever to load on both.
I've had a wonderful experience with this app. The stories are up-to-date, the e-edition allows you to tap the article and have it open up for easier reading, and the games are all playable. My only wish is that they implement a search feature that is on the desktop and mobile website for The Observer.
I'm grateful to have a local paper and happy to support it. However, ever since the update sharing articles is totally broken. Rather than share a link to the article, it just shares the article's associated image. I have to assume this isn't intended functionality, particularly as I'm sure the Observer is looking to grow its base of subscribers. This is definitely a buy that should be addressed, though, and one that I'd think would've been caught in testing/QA.
Your crop replacing double tap to isolate a puzzle is a horrible idea. Doesnt work properly on my ipod touch and not at all on my Android tablet and have no idea how to print crop on my windows 10 laptop. Make puzzles like articles. One tap isolation.
7-Sep-2019: Screen Blanks on every new page and every image resize. 13-Sep: fixed. ~14-Sep: major revisions. 23-Sep: App can't load digital Observer. 27-Jan-2020: faulty again, replica edition will not load. Publisher never tells us when they have updated the software, so we never know when we need to uninstall and reinstall again.
Terrible app. Frequently doesn't display the text of an article. The same articles appear in different sections. Sometimes articles stick around for days.
If I click on an article from a notification, most news apps would take me to that article. Thisjone doesn't seem to think that's necessary. So I read LESS articles than I would browilsing because I know I won't be able to find what I want.
Never loads, will try reinstalling. Old app was better. Reinstalled is working better. Will add stars as it improves. Thanks for getting the bugs fixed. You are my news home! 10/01/21 App still working good, added another star! Keep up the good work. This is very much appreciated.
Used the updated app and still slow to download and delete 25 seconds. Downside is you have to log into app to read downloaded paper, and of course have internet access. Miss the ability to read paper anywhere
You have managed to create an app that is both difficult to navigate and slow. Very difficult to determine what is a mistake and what is a feature.
App wasn't opening past title screen, so I uninstalled and tried to reinstall only for a pop-up to say it couldn't get in touch with the server.
App can't connect to internet when all other apps/browsers on my phone have no issue. Third time.of occurrence. Great app when working 5 stars.
Notifications for articles don't link to the articles ... clicking an article notification simply opens the app.
Extremely slow, poorly organized, unintuitive, some features do not work, forgets I'd/PW every time it updates.
Nice improvement to app Story headlines on left make it easy to scan through while being able to look at story content on right Good job!
A good newspaper Android app, most especially for the Charlotte-Mecklinburg urban and subrban area! Keep adding features and improving this The Charlotte Observer Android app, McClatchy! Itz as good as any paper's app for Android in the entire country! -------------Aethelwulf A.W. Stark.
Instead of signing up, just Google the story, a million sites you don't have to sign up for will give you the story. There's also several other news apps that don't bother you with singing up for a subscription.
Ever since the last update on August 16 the app will not open. All I get is a white page with the blue words "the Charlotte observer ". Your single robotic response to all complaints is no help at all. Fix the damn app.
I can't find search anywhere! I click on a link and I'm asked to sign in with Google, but not sign in to my account. Why doesn't the link open in the app? I just want to read an article
I can't print the puzzles so i can use them. I get half of the crossword on 2 different pages.
Great journalism, but the app is nearly unusable and displays ads despite being a paying subscriber.
The app was always slow but now doesn't open at all. I pay monthly for on line access to the Observer but still can't use this app.
No doubt this is the best local newspaper source in the country, if not the best in the world. I love to know what's going on Charlotte and surrounding areas. Not just covering the Panthers, Hornets, and so many others.
I like the design of the recent upgrade with one exception. When I receive a push notification on my phone and I tap on the notice, it just opens the app to the home page and not the article. Please fix this! It is frustrating to click on the article and if it posted awile ago it is no longer on the home page and you can't search for it. All other news app do this, why not this one?
