I would give more stars but this app on android devices does not support a dark theme. This means that my eyes get tired and it's hard to read for long with all that white background. Although a dark theme is supported on iOS version of the app, and also that I raised a ticket to globe and mail about it, I was told that there are no plans to support a dark mode anytime in the near future. This is unfortunate as the app on android is the same fee as on iOS but does not support same features.
Content is good. I see some improvements to the app finally yay so bumping up my rating to 4 from previous 2 stars! Original review: As a paying subscriber for over a year I've asked globe and mail to make it easier to not see error pages when tapping a stock ticker on the app. Support was responsive but basically replied that there was no eta for this fix . Been a year or more..still broken . I think for over $10 a month, there should be a way of prioritizing feedback.
Despite being a paying subscriber, many articles are unavailable in app. "Unable to load content, retry". Complete garbage, very frustrating! Great way to treat customers!!!
Overall Usefull. Some days the auto download is not available. Some times the title highlight for expanding the item is not there. If expanded some time the end of article is not present. My table was out of memory and I found 3 GB of old downloads. I requested 7 days only. Sharing articles - always possible by receiver. But I like the general paper presentation.
I have a subscription but the app doesn't detect it for some reason so premium content is not available to me within the app. I need to go to a browser. Annoying but I'm too lazy to calm customer service.
Horrible user experience. You can't find new stories or the stories you want to read without searching specific titles. If you were to write an article about God and bad media apps globe and mail would be the bad one and The Athletic would be the good one.
As a long time reader I appreciate the quality and the reliability of the news reporting and the variety of opinions. The sports pages have improved immeasurably.
The app reports current and interesting news stories. I check updated items several times a day.
Unlike the mobile web version one can not search for stock details. Please add that as its one of the main selling points to subscribe.
No comments section on articles, I'm going back to reading on the website instead. Also, if you want to encourage use, TGAM links should open in the app. Most articles I read are curated through Google News it other aggregators, which will always land me on the website. Struggling to find a case for using this app...
Great app, great news service. Easy to navigate. Only problem is the audio player. I find it's often somewhat buggy.
Usefulness of the app is greatly diminished by having no way for me to sign in to my account. On the site I use the Google Single Sign on (sign in with Google) but this option isn't available on the app. I can't just sign on with a username and password, because the whole point of single sign on is that I don't have a Globe password. The only single sign on option in the app is for Facebook which doesn't do me my good.
I still can't find the daily kenken or sudoku puzzles, even though I used the search icon.
Been a reader of the Globe since the 80s, so the no complaints about the reporting. Regarding functionality, it's good, and would be even better with a dark-mode option and, FOR GOD'S SAKE, just list articles on the app from most recent to oldest!! It's almost like they're arranged to be difficult to navigate through, with titles repeated on the same page more often than not. There have been days when I've considered unsubscribing just for that. Free sites normally don't offer that frustration.
The lists of articles presented when you make a section selection often contains articles from a month ago or more. And the lists usually have the same articles listed multiple times. When i used to get the print edition i would read from first to last page. Now i never feel like i fully "read the newspaper" in the same way. I don't like it. But i keep my subscription because the columnists i like to read are inaccessible otherwise.
The offline reading feature doesn't work. I've enabled offline reading and based on the instructions, it should cache the content so I can access them offline, but everytime I try to access the articles offline, they don't show up. Please fix this feature or add a feature so we know if the articles have been cached. The current experience is very frustrating.
Each daily edition is cluttered with numerous articles that are days, weeks and even months old. One must wade through this outdated clutter to find "news". At the very least, the stale articles, if they must be inserted to pad out the daily edition, should be confined to an "in case you missed it" section at the very bottom of the daily edition.
Great app, very readable, customizable sections and offline downloading. Would be helpful to have icons that show which articles have been successfully downloaded and are available, and also which articles are just video, rather than opening them up individually and finding out. Also helpful would be the option to customize notifications, differentiating between breaking news and the more in-depth articles that get announced
Absolutely enjoy the integration of Google News and the Globe and Mail app. Allows to scan current news items then look for related Globe and Mail articles. The "read the article" feature is a huge p!us. Unfortunate that I can't reorder the sections to my preference. The loss of one Star is because I still have to print out the Daily Puzzles and Alert options are so limited.
An excellent source of very accessible news. Notifications are well managed, and text formatting is perfect for cell phone reading. Story presentation makes it easy to get as much or as little as you want from each notification, and the audio option is probably a very helpful option for some users.
Excellent news app and service. Definitely worth subscribing to.
the app crashes frequently. there is no opportunity to customize displayed content. management of content of the app isnt so great either: repeats of the same article; old content. today is the 23rd of February and I have articles popping up from the 7th of January, sometimes even December. summary: there is a lot to sift through before I finally come across something current and fresh.
I understand that apps need revenue either through adds or subscription. But in looking through the articles on the app I found that half are locked, and prompt you to pay for a subscription. Honestly I prefer adds, personal preference, that is all. The rest of the app was great, relevant articles and a good layout.
Lots of interesting and informing reads at my fingertips.
I am reading the Globe & Mail on an android cellphone. Two comments: (i) I see the same adverts over and over and over again. Even within the same article, if I scroll past an advert it appears later in the same article, sometimes two or three times more. If I read the advert, it will still appear later while reading another article. (ii) Where are the political cartoons and even more importantly where are the comics? I like to read the Dilbert comic especially. Thank you.
I think the app developers and the people who manage the app should start improving the app by making small changes that will make it more user friendly. E.g. For most articles on the main page wuth headlines there is a thumbnail picture. However when one clicks on the article link and reads the article the larger image is not provided. Sometimes the thumbnail pucture is so small ine really needs to see the larger picture in the article and one cannot find it. Very frustrating. Hence 3 stars.
