the "back" function is somewhat annoying as one goes to the last article read rather than the selection of headlines one started from when (re)opening the app from the widget. probably that's due to the app running in the background (multitasking) but to me always comes unexpected...
Some news outlets are still trustworthy, this is one of them; that's the most important thing to state right there. New is up to date, features are targeted and the live feed helps to keep bang up to date. The app itself is pretty slick for a news app too. Some nice UX and features. High quality graphics and presentation throughout.
The basic functionality of the app is good, but it signs me out occasionally. Bookmarks don't sync across devices. Unlike the Editions app, or the website, it has dark mode, which I use due to sight problems. The new First Edition content annoyingly ignores dark mode. Feedback or fault reports within the app rely on having an email client in use on your device: a lazy assumption on the part of the developers. Customer service is patronising and unhelpful. Issues have been reported and ignored.
Mostly good, but recent updates have made it quite flaky. Very erratic in how it handles saving pages for later now - screen doesn't always update to show pinning / unpinning and saved articles now appear in a random order instead of latest first. Also has started misbehaving when there's low / no signal. Front page sections are all greyed out while it continually tries to refresh. It previously allowed you to see and read already downloaded articles while offline with no issues.
Reader for a number of years as they have a good recipe & sports section. Didn't mind the adverts as it was well designed into the UI & not intrusive or poorly implemented like many other platforms. Hard paywall has now been introduced asking for £9.99 a month! £9.99 a month is insane, for that there needs to be a massive improvement in the quality of content & functionality of the app. Uninstalled & account closed.
The Guardian app is reliably fast and includes many useful tools which help the user expedite searching and reading. The formatting for the mobile device screen size has worked flawlessly on my iPhone and Android screens. The app, thankfully, is not a battery drain and won't make your phone heat up while in use. As to the quality of content, I can't say enough about the thorough, unbiased and accurate reporting presented by The Guardian. One of my top 3 go-to sources of trustworthy news.
Your news coverage is awesome, broad, comprehensive and thorough and the app refreshingly functions properly and reliably in the "free" version. I live on a fixed income and unfortunately cannot afford the "premium" version which seems to unlock many great options. I've tried many news services and The Guardian is by far the absolute best!! Thanks.
I haven't been using this app for a long time to be able to review exactly the pros and cons of this app, but what struck me is the layout, which I personally like, very familair to the website of the Guardian. The annoying part are the ads popping up while you are reading an article — but it's also quite understandable, as the app is free. Having said that, the app is good — and so are the articles. ⭐
Loads so fast compared to the browser. We don't have great internet, so it's a nice improvement. You can see what you've already read as well. Edit: a recent update takes you to the top of the front page every single time you return from reading an article, it's infuriating to have to scroll back down to find your place again. Please, please fix this!
The Guardian is the only news outlet in the UK that provides objective information, good background info, and great opinion pieces. The online version is easy to peruse and the app easy to use. The article search function has greatly improved, but can still be better by linking headlines found in the print version to the respective articles.
Until this week I was a beta tester for the app. But a recent update has left a Guardian icon permantly showing in the status bar of my home screen. Nothing I do will get rid of it including uninstalling the app, leaving the beta programme and reinstalling the latest stable version. Bugs! Please help.
I don't like the way the front page keeps updating, and you can't save articles for future viewing. All links in the articles look the same. They should have a different colour if they are external, as these can be troublesome. I don't like the slide left and right in the articles. This can't be disabled, I don't need it, and can lead to an article being marked as read.
Was a good place to get accurate news reporting. One of the very few reliable free news apps. But no more. They've put the contents behind a paywall. In these current times can't afford it so deleted. Shame.
Very good news app. Pleasant, vibrant graphics, nice UI, easy to navigate. Also, really easy to read fonts - which is extremely important for someone with not so young eyes any more. And what's most important after all - highest quality reporting.
A fairly good section of Guardian news stories that are kept updated throughout each day. Lots of nags to upgrade and some modest advertising. However, the Guardian website presents more extended news coverage and maintains a very similar layout to the app. Furthermore, with the web version, an Ad-Block app can be used to cut out all the adverts, unwanted sections and intrusive scripts / trackers..
Great app, with all the latest news. You can remove ads by paying for a subscription, which is totally fair for quality journalism. Still, the app works fine even in a free version, you just need to accept the ads. Overall, easy to navigate and great content
Uses dark mode, easy to read and on the eyes, good balance of images and articles, not too many ad's, or ad's that steal control of the app. Works smoothly and not overly busy like some news apps. Among my favorite news apps for content and customization.
Great app for news reading. Especially while improving my proficiency in English language as a foreign language, it helped me a lot in expanding my vocabulary to a great extent, and also helped me furnishing my grammatical knowledge by reading news and obtaining knowledge simultaneously.
I consider The Guardian one of the most reliable news sources in our age of manipulation and disinformation. It's news stories are articulate, well researched and thought provoking. Time has always been precious but even more so when we have countless informative applications on internet. This one counts among those which add worth to time invested to read it.
As a English student I must begin by pointing out that this newspaper is extremely handy when you are learning this amazing language. Apart from that, what I particularly like is the overwhelming of topics that you can read in this awesome and informative newspaper. Last but definitely not least,I highly recommend reading the articles with an eye to be totally keep up to date with the latest news.
Great app for my favourite newspaper. Really easy to use and looks great on screen! Love the way you can bookmark and rearrange what appears on your homepage and how it's easy to go back and re-read articles you might want to keep for another day.
The Guardian is not only the best UK news app for the user, but also has the most comprehensive, properly researched and well written journalism. It is a liberal progressive site but provides great news coverage and often includes articles from other political viewpoints. On top of that it has the widest range of cultural and living features that are all available in its archive if you support this historic and excellent source of proper journalism. Just try .... and then support it.☺️
Other than the subscription service, which seems set up to let you pay for the service but, but doesn't actually give you the perks from the subscription. I would personally love to support the guardian financially, but I don't make enough to money to give it away. Disappointing.
Great journalists. I subscribe to several daily online news apps. I tend to read more articles in the Guardian. The bookmark feature is perfect. I like to go back and re-read articles or finish articles at another time.
I love the blue colour while the app is opening. Its easy on the eyes. Don't is good for reading. As for the content, news are covered in points and elaborately too. It's a good app to have on your phone.
The app is disappointing. It crashes often - twice in the last ten minutes - on my Android tablet. The formatting is poor unless I rotate my tablet by 90 degrees, with inexplicable gaps between headline and image. I'm paying to support the Guardian and quality journalism and would have expected better of the app.
Great features for an online version of the newspaper. Search functions for old articles or by author. Bookmark. For foreigners The Guardian is a middle left journal. The fact or not too much twisted and is helpful to get info with a quiet good accuracy. I think I'll keep on my subscription.
My favourite app, very nice and intuitive to use. One minor point: with the articles (on the home page, as well as related stories at the bottom of an article) I am missing the indication how old they are! This has been removed, regrettably. Evidently, this is particularly important for the related articles. I hardly ever look at the date on the article itself, all the more important to indicate its "age" where I decide whether I want to read it or not... For the rest, nothing negative to say!
