Very well done app. The only negatives are that sometimes the words have spaces in between letters which isnt usually a big deal, and the rotate-screen feature is always on despite turning it off on my phone settings so I cant lay in bed and avoid responsibilities and read the news without the screen going sideways.
I like having the actual paper to review instead of article links. This works great and feels like reading a paper. I do wish that it wouldn't lose my place when the lock screen comes on my mobile phone (on pc it's fine). If I pause I have to figure out where I was and on Sundays that can take a while.
Very poor functioning app. Takes 30 second or longer to download. Navigation within the app is very buggy and non functional at times. It gets confused and displays no content when trying to navigate. Left side arrow scroll does not want to work. Often have to kill app and start over. The apple version is 1000 times more superior and does not have the same issues.
Maybe it is just Android, but it the App creates strange formatting on a lot of the articles in either the text showing up weird (esp. when clicking on the News of the Weird), spacing or word-wrapping in the paragraphs, the inset photos& their titles, or the continuation, so it makes it awkward to read. The newspaper needs to be set up as an Online Edition, and not just stringing together screenshots of the print newspaper, which is awkward and seems like more work.
The May 5th update is very buggy. Pictures do not align with text. It is very jumpy and crashes frequently. The 7/2020 update is so improved! No longer crashes 3 times per issue, and the graphics and page presentations work perfectly. Only reason it does not get 5 stars is the one finger positioning and two finger magnification is a bit twitchy. Still very useable.
I have been using SJMN e-edition for years and for the most part it's been satisfactory. Today I deleted it and downloaded the newer app. What a mistake! Now I can't open it. I keep getting a message saying that is not able to open, check my Internet connection and try again. Well, after trying dozens of times and Uninstalling the app and downloading it again several times, no luck. Also, my Internet is fine
Update 7/18/20: Latest update is MUCH better. Elements on page are now correctly positioned with no overlapping. Only problem is that zooming in/out on the pages seems like they "snap" to an unseen grid. Okay, I see what happened: Got signed out of the app. When I signed back in, "new" layout was in effect. If you go More/Settings, there's a button to Return to Classic eEdition. If you do return and want the new layout back, use Android Settings/Apps and Storage/Clear data to sign out.
How can it take NINETY MINUTES to pull up today's edition of a newspaper in Silicon Valley? All it took was multiple phone calls, multiple clearing my cache, repeatedly rebooting my phone, repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the app, changing my password that worked fine when I set up the account 4 days ago. PATHETIC! And now that it "works", it's near impossible to get thru an edition without it vanishing and having to hit random buttons, close app, restart phone to maybe retrieve it.
See the full newspaper page, and zoom in on the articles you want to read more of. Best approach to a news app I've found. Also not personalized "news", so you avoid the echo chamber. The app has small flaws, like snapping to grid that's annoying and sometimes tapping the links is hard.
Sometimes the interface format on the page for the Mercury is slow when you're trying to read an article it takes some time for it to update and move the article up so you can read it. The other thing is I'm a subscriber to the digital service and when I try to read mercury news on my phone from time to time it'll put an ad on saying subscribe for 99 cents per month or whatever it is I'm already a subscriber I don't want to see that ad.
This app is super buggy--pages take forever to load and sometimes when they finally do the text is jumbled in areas, the app will regularly stop, and I'll often be midway through the paper when it will suddenly reload to the first page and I'll have to scroll through a bunch of slow-loading pages to get back to where I was.
Great Way to get daily paper I live in San Jose so I pay for the e-edition of my local newspaper. The paper downloads very quickly and has a very intuitive interface to search, scroll, increase or decrease font, etc. I won't ever go back to a paper newspaper, especially when the days of Sunday ads are long gone.
Enjoy reading the Merc on the app! Just wish the sports page on the e-editon would be updated with final scores and box scores...
Crashes all the time, if it even loads the newspaper. Most of the time it just sits on a white screen. I was able to get it to work for a short time by clearing the app's cache and re-signing in. But by the second article it refused to load again.
The May 5 release of the app does not work on my Android device (Samsung Galaxy S9+)! It doesn't load half of the pages, and doesn't load in full resolution many of the pages it does load. Please take down the May 5 version and bring back the old version immediately! The new version is unusable!
What happened to the Editions button? After downloading and installing v3.3.14 update, matrix of past recent front pages no longer appears. Instead, just get list of all the MN local publications. Clicking Editions from the Menu icon just returns to the local publications list. Unable to read anything but current edition of the day. Uninstalled and reinstalled twice without change on ASUS 10.1 Android tablet.
The navigation arrows disappear from the displayed page after a few seconds and don't reappear until you scroll to the next page. This is inconvenient when I want to use the double arrows to scroll to the next section. The arrows did not disappear in the previous version of the app.
I got a trial subscription to be able to read Hariette Cole articles. It didn't work for most of the time. I didn't get any emails for the entire trial, but when I went to cancel the service I was told no refunds were given even though it wasn't charged to my account yet. The next day after I cancelled, my account was charged and miraculously the day after I started being able to read the news, and it arrived in my email. I feel cheated and they did nothing to rectify the issue.
Latest version is screwed up - when I tap on a story, it opens to a font so huge that only one or two words fit on a line! Had to uninstall & go to an alternate source to download a prior version. Please fix! (Then I will update # of stars)
I'm not being allowed to read my paid subscrption! I followed all of the instructions and the app keeps sending me back to the beginning. Where I have to repeat everything all over again. I've uninstalled the app and will be looking into canceling my subscrption to the Mercury News.
Doesn't work more often than it does. Comics are unviewable. Worst app on my phone. The updated app, 7/20, is worse. It just shuts off every 30 seconds. Have to keep reloading it. SJMN is the newspaper of Silicon valley, but the app acts like Trump designed it.
Navigation is not perfect, nor is the formatting, but I really enjoy having the Merc available wherever I am. I actually miss the insert ads, but I can get hold of that info other places!
I am incredibly impressed with this app. I read the Mercury News on my Galaxy Tab S7+ and it's a great experience. It's great to be able to zoom into articles and it still retains quality.
Use this daily and since the latest May 5, 2020 update the pages are blurry. I have to reload several times to view. If this keeps up they'll lose another customer. For the price of Sunday paper and daily e-paper, it's not worth it. Update Jan.2021 Still the same, half the time. Still getting through but you must be patient.
Like most of it - except wish could do the puzzles with my phone pen.
12/1 update. App no longer works with my login. I get an error about it not accepting login from Facebook. Such a bummer, it used to be great. Great! I love getting the newspaper on my phone.
mostly a good app. navigation is easy, adjustable fonts.picture and text view. sometimes it crashes and gets stuck switching to the new edition the following day.
It's a great mimic of the paper. Much improved since the last time I used it. Still freezes occasionally, but just stop it and it restarts in the right place.
Bottom of full page display covered with banner ad. I paid a subscription and didn't sign up for digital advertising. The page and section selections is gone. Difficult to navigate return from article to full page. I miss the previous App.
