Velázquez Guide, Guides to the Museo del Prado Collection, PDF now available. Free download

The Guide to the Prado is the only official guide to the Museo Nacional del Prado. It is the essential publication for visiting, appreciating and learning about the Museum’s Permanent Collection.

Using the Guide is the best way to enjoy the experience of the Museo del Prado from anywhere in the world as it accompanies visitors around the Museum, explaining it to them and bringing the collection closer to students, art lovers and everyone interested in this subject.

It features 400 works that offer a precise idea of the nature of the Museum, illustrated in high quality and with short texts that aim to inform the reader on the subject of the work, the artist who created it, its importance within the collection as a whole and other aspects of interest.

The works are organised by school and chronologically within each school. This guide is extremely easy to use.

Features of this application:

• 400 high-quality images, optimised for viewing on high-resolution digital devices, and the inclusion of the images of the backs of triptychs and diptychs that are not visible in the gallery.
• 50 enlarged works that allow the user to move across them and appreciate their details in remarkable close-up.
• 50 related works that enhance knowledge of the work and explain the connections between different artists and the Museum’s collections.
• 5 thematic routes plus suggestions for preparing a visit and for discovering themes with young children.
• The option to select the articles that most interest you through the Favourites function.
• Search by index of the collections or by index of artists.

I have no idea why this doesn't get better reviews. It's basically the same content as the €20 book the gallery sells (so, text and pics, not an audio guide) but for less than a fiver and on your phone. Easy to navigate with hi-res pictures, plus really handy features like opening and closing triptychs to see the outer wings. There's also an index of artists so you can quickly find more info when viewing paintings. Two changes I'd make would be allowing landscape view and adding which room a painting is in.

Does nothing except offer to download paid app. Waste of time

Sure, you can download it for free, but the only option once you open the app is to purchase a guide! That's deceptive.

The app is basically the book guide of Prado Museum to be read on the mobile phone, but it has very small letters and does not allow to use the phone in the landscape mode. Therefore, you may have to use the zoom and scroll to the sides and up/down constantly. From my view, it's better to purchase the book in the museum.

This is not a free guide. It is an interface to purchase the Prado guide in your preferred language.
