The Road to Canterbury

May the best story win! Enter the medieval world of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," where your journey, and the stories you tell, will change history.

"The Road to Canterbury" is a 175,000-word interactive medieval adventure novel, and 2018 Nebula Award for Game Writing Finalist, by Kate Heartfield, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based--without graphics or sound effects--and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

London, 1375. The Black Prince of England is dying, and peace with France hangs in the balance.

You are a young pauper on a secret mission. Join a pilgrimage to Canterbury with the powerful noblewoman Philippa de Roet, co-sister-in-law to the Black Prince, and Philippa's husband, Geoffrey Chaucer himself, the customs agent, spy, and occasional poet. Your mission is to persuade Philippa to change the course of history.

You'll fight raiders and knights, aid or foil an assassin, fire up a peasants' revolt, and change your luck for the better or worse. And of course, there's a storytelling contest with a big prize--one you intend to win.

• Play as male, female or non-binary, and as gay, straight, bi, asexual and/or aromantic
• Travel the ancient route of Watling Street from Southwark to Canterbury
• Win a prize in the storytelling contest
• A quest, a joust, a trial by combat? All in a week's work
• Persuade an influential noblewoman to change her politics
• Find love with a knight, a squire, or a traveler from distant lands
• Become a knight, or the head of an abbey, or a powerful player in London's merchant guilds
• Solve the mystery that haunts your family
• Declare your loyalty to England or to France and determine the outcome of the Hundred Years' War

The Hundred Years' war is heating up: will you stoke the flames on the Road to Canterbury?

Very enjoyable medieval "road trip" with plenty of intrigue and events to keep your attention hooked throughout. Clever use of Chaucer's story as a backdrop to the main plot, and full of rich characters as a result. Definitely recommend this, and hope a sequel in some form is on the cards

Really well written, high amount of replayability, constant choices throughout gameplay keeps you fully engaged. Easily one of the best choice games ever, great, great stuff.

Wish they have a game library that makes you purchase all games just like the one that Choice Library Games have their Premium Promo. Maybe able to read a fraction but who knows in the future still having the knowledge of such a great deal is a good incentive to purchase.

I really enjoyed the game choices, the story and the flavour of 14th century England. The history was woven in seamlessly, and I am now going back to Play It again and try a few different choices!

The way this story was written... Really put me off; It was definitely not my cup of tea. I couldn't finish the story. But I can see that this game was made with lots of care and effort so five stars!

It was a bit boring..i just couldn't keep interested in it. I loved magics and heros of myth and psy high as well. But this was drawn out and boring

why the four stars ? because the supposedly away Bailey suddenly appears to give me a meaningful look after Phillipe recounts her story, thats why.

In short, my opinion is that this story is very rushed. My choices hardly ever gave me an outcome I expected. When they did, it was always so short-lived and meaningless. The story is very unsatisfying since each atmosphere is broken so quickly. I had high hopes, but I regret paying for the full game.

It was a good game I was just a little bit disappointed that in the end you couldn't marry Perkin what can I say I am a sucker for a romantic happy ending

I liked it. Replayable because it felt consistent, trying to do everything felt out of character. I ended strong sense of my MC and a unique, though similar, story through each reiteration. As with other reviewers, I wanted more closure in the epilogue though. Edit: Got an amazing ending I didn't realize was possible and was really happy with it.

That was really fun. The characters I got to interact with were colourful and sympathetic, and my MC's hapless adventures frequently had me laughing my head off. (The only thing I really missed was a more personal epilogue with my developing career and love interest.)

Free content is truly great. Not sure reliving the Canterbury Tales is quite enough to get me to shell out even with the added espionage and skullduggery, but it certainly starts well
