One star is still too many. This new version is as bad as the previous ones. None of the problems have been addressed. Like others, I find the app frequently locks up, and has endless formatting problems most days. I've taken up the matter with their technical team, sending detailed info and screenshots. Their 'cure' was to stop replying. When my subscription ends, MY cure is to not renew. I do wonder how the Times' award-winning journalists would report on it if this were another paper's app.
Unless you have an iPad, don't bother. I have had a Samsung Tab since November and have to suffer text superimposed on top of each other, random freezes and crashes. The Times completely ignore feedback and show no interest in updating the app. Works fine on an Android phone, so surely it's not beyond the wit of man to fix - if you can be bothered
Terrible app. It's a rare day when I can get all the way through the editions without it freezing. Uninstalled and reinstalled several times but to no great avail. Now after several more days of frustration at being unable to read the edition uninterrupted I have decided to cancel my subscription. Technical support from the Times has been minimal and useless. I would advise anyone planning to subscribe to the digital edition and read via the app to avoid like the plague.
Terrible app, it doesn't work properly on my Lenovo tablet. Some text is lost from the end of articles, it doesn't seem to adapt to different screen sizes. It doesn't remember where you last used it, always goes back to the front cover when the app is reopened. Auto-download doesn't work properly. And the puzzles section doesn't work at all. Far better to access via a browser, even on a tablet.
Unreliable. If not for Lockdown, I would have cancelled. App crashes or pages don't load. When I have my tablet in landscape mode, text gets lost at the bottom of the page or repeated at the top of the next column. I still like the content, when I can get to it. Articles are clearly more in-depth than other media apps such as BBC or Sky News. However, I find myself increasingly using these apps because they are so much better to use.
I would prefer the app acted more like a real newspaper, rather than jumping around to different areas. Surely that's the point of using the app over the website? Also, something that annoys me that weirdly nobody else seems to have mentioned, is that the screen doesn't stay on while you're reading. It's annoying having to keep tapping the screen all the time.
Frustrating. It's quite late in the day before sections download, and need several attempts. Reading the issue on the website is an option but that has the very irritating habit of jumping up and down the screen for 10 seconds or so while the sections line themselves up. Once loaded it works well and can be read offline without any problems.
I've been using this app for years and it continues to frustrate. It crashes almost every time I use it: typically it will freeze on a particular page and the only way to 'recover' it is to shut it down and restart it. It's also very annoying that (assuming you've missed the elusive auto download trigger - a mysterious event that happens haphazardly) you have to download every section of the an edition separately and consecutively. On Sundays this is a lengthy exercise. Out of words so: poor.
Barely usable on my standard Lenovo tablet (which you'd think would be the best sort of device to read the Times on). No improvements in years. You start reading articles and they finish half way through with no means of finishing the article regardless of where you swipe. Surely it can't be that hard to fix this. Mobile phone app seems ok but that's not an ideal way to read a weighty newspaper.
Its absolute RUBBISH!! It doesn't properly fit the pages to the screen of my Galaxy tab S2 8 inch. The pages stick, and the next pages won't load. I have to close the app and try again , but it usually sticks on the same page. So there are articles that I cannot read at all. I've already complained, but no action has been taken. I will be terminating my subscription.
I have just downloaded the app and I am highly disappointed. Regardless of what position I read at , landscape or portrait mode I miss some of the article. Can you please fix this as otherwise there is no point in having the subscription. Also, the newspaper sometimes does not download until 10 am I read it in the morning before heading out. Extremely disappointed does not Express it.
I have subscribed to The Times for 35 years. It has always been progressive. This app is an example of the way The Times continues to deliver. I enjoy both the news by hard copy and electronically every day. The app works smoothly and delivers the news in an exciting, stimulating manner. The clarity of the print electronically and the photos is stunning. Paper in hand or tablet, I get up to the minute news, sport and the best commentary you desire.
App keeps freezing and crashing. Have tried to raise it with the Times tech team but they can offer no solutions. Very frustrating on a samsung tablet. Times tech team have been unresponsive. Their responses suggest that they know they have a problem but cannot resolve it. They tend to guide you to the web version. Having been invited to edit my review I thought I should. Nothing has changed. I have tried reinstalling it but it continues to frustrate. Time to move to the Guardian.
I have been using this app for a number of years on a Samsung Galaxy Tab. it has all the benefits of what is a quality newspaper without the political bias of many others. The app does have some minor formatting issues, but not that it comprises it's use. The one improvement that is required is for the comments section to be included, as is the case with both IOS and online versions. To not have this feature on the Android version is disappointing.
This used to work on my Galaxy Tab more more or less fine. There were some bugs - overwritten articles - but it was OK. Since mid-June it had stopped working altogether. I've reinstalled if and even done a factory reset on the tablet but it still doesn't work. Given that I pay for the pleasure of reading the Times this is really not good enough. I can read it on the Web but that doesn't work when there's no access to WiFi. Please fix this or I'll start reading another paper.
A few weeks into using the Times app on my tablet, I'm fed up with having to look at the app on my phone to get the last few words of articles. Oddly, fewer words missing in portrait than landscape. Then there are the pages that comprise mostly banners, a picture of the journalist and white space. I estimate less than 20% actual text in landscape mode. I read The Times for the words, not the fancy layout. How I long for The Times facsimile on PressReader to return! And where's the crossword?
Has serious faults that need correcting. Pages not opening; text running over bottom page; text bleeding over from inset boxes into surrounding text; crossword entries appearing in multiple editions; etc.,. All these points and others have been raised with The Times customer care department over the past 9 months and despite their promises to do something to correct matters, nothing changes. I used the iPad version for 10 years and that worked perfectly.
Not a great news app. Lacks logic and some elements don't work. Auto download does not work reliably especially for large multi-part editions. Have to load individual parts one by one.. Tedious. Reading through is difficult as there's no option to read 'like a paper', page by page. Too many scroll-downs and click to open areas which take you to another part but rarely back to where you were. No way to see what you've read already - lacks 'progress bar' & page numbers. Cannot fill the crosswords.
Average. Some pages scroll horizontally (but column control is poor), others vertically (much better). In today's ST Travel section, several columns are overwritten. Same with TT. I have had links missing as well. When it works, it is excellent. I have signed up for a contract. How long will depend on the necessary improvements! 1/6 - Why does the format change frequently? It takes me a time to work out how to read the paper. This morning the format seems STlike not TTlike. Some articles are mis
There are clear problems with text presentation on my new damsung tablet. Sentences overlap, some end on one column and then do not restart on the next rendering the article unreadable. I am a subscriber and have always found the app on my iPhone great. Why is the android app on my tablet so different and so much worse. It often crashes between pages too. Overall the app must be improved.
Generally a more than adequate app. However the tablet version is let down by a strange typographic layout bug and poor font rendering, nor does it allow text selection and thus copying and search. Any chance of upgrading the text display library? Unfortunately the latest update hasn't addressed these issues. The layout bug persists as below, and you still can't select.
Works well on Android tablets but there are problems with the app on Chromebook (Google Pixel Slate). Much better experience with The Telegraph app. 1. In portrait mode the text uses less than half the screen. 2. Articles that scroll vertically don't always respond. 3. With keyboard attached the app doesn't respond to keypad navigation if it was loaded in tablet mode. 4. Update 10/1/21: Still doesn't format correctly on large tablet in portrait mode. Works on Android tablet but not on ChromeOS.
Doesn't deserve 1 star. Have to keep coming out of the app and then going back in to turn the page . Even then some articles are not there so just get a blank page or constant buffering. End of articles missing and overall very poor indeed. Not worthy of a paper with the reputation of the Times. Have seen many similar reviews and completely agree.
Have just uninstalled and reinstalled this app after experiencing similar problems to those described below (font overlarge, many pages not loading properly etc.). Despite contacting the Times on about three occasions the problems persist, and it would seem that really dont care, but continue to receive my monthly subscription. Ive had enough and intend to try an alternatve newspaper' s app which works perfectly on my tablet. The one star is only because it is not possible to score less!
As a subscriber to the Times on line for many years it has become apparent that insufficient support is given to readers using Tablets. I am regularly having to close the app when articles become stuck, or only the first page can be read. Using the menu to move to the next article results in an endlessly revolving circle! Many articles have repeated text and sections overlaid with other text. Latest version has not improved any of the above and it appears they do care.
There are still many hangs reading any and every edition, sometimes the problem can be reduced by switching between landscape and portrait, but sometimes not. When it hangs, the app has to be closed and you have to find the article again; these problems have been reported on for years now.
I go to bed at night, turn off my desktop, awake after some hours, turn on tablet, guess what? A completely different set of apps! Can't do follow-up work (which is VERY important to me) and I'll be begarred if I can get my originals back. Now it tell me that it is incompatible with my newspaper! Change has been a a TOTAL disaster.
Nice app, text size was a problem till I went down a size on my android tablet, rather than the Times settings, now see whole screen. I can now set large text within the app so can read the articles comfortably. Suggest playing with both settings till you get the whole article on the visible page, and a text size that is comfortable. It took minutes to sort out. On the whole happy.
Why oh why has this app been discontinued! It is very easy to navigate and works extremely well on my chromebook. The support provided following an occasional hiccup has been excellent. I shall continue to use it for as long as possible and will only very reluctantly move to the new version!
