The War for the West

As the ruler of a province in the Western Peninsula, it will be expected of you to hold court and make yourself available to petitioners, settling disputes and delivering justice to the land and its inhabitants.

The War for the West is a grimdark 485,000 word interactive medieval fantasy novel by Lucas Zaper.

Among your duties will be to administer the money collected from taxes and see that it is well spent, be it in improvements to the local infrastructure or in purchasing personal objects and services. You will also need to manage your relationship with other powers and arrange a proper suitor for marriage, which will serve both to ensure the continuation of your lineage and consolidate your alliances.

But even if diplomacy fails, the military will always be at your command, ready to suppress rebellions and defend your fief against foreign invaders. To guarantee their supremacy in the field of battle, you must keep a steady flow of recruitment and enforce constant training.

Alas, not all problems can be dealt with by soft words and sharp blades. In such circumstances, one may find that there is little a few drops of poison or a well-placed agent cannot solve.

This all may appear overwhelming at first, but you will count with the assistance of your counselors, each with their own specialties. Their advice will prove invaluable as you navigate through the dangerous dynamics of the realm’s politics.

If you can keep their treachery in check, that is.

* Play as a Lord or a Lady, and find pleasure wherever you see fit.
* Fight in the open field, withstand a siege, join your enemy or avoid conflict entirely.
* Marry for love, power, or convenience, and use lovers to settle your lust if necessary.
* Bow to the church or defy it by joining the northern heresy or making your own religion.
* Uncover the secrets of your lineage and the ancient mysteries of the world, as well as many hidden endings.
* Make allies and enemies as you visit neighboring provinces and interact with other nobles.
* Decide over a vast number of random events that might happen as you hold court.
* Build your army and test it in battle against your enemies.

This game is almost so good but I keep getting into it and the it completely deletes everything. Even without opening the stats menu. Hope this get fixed soon because I really like this!

One of my absolute favorite choice games. It has a massive degree of replayability and quite a few endings. It also has a very well developed management system which actually shows results. How you build your character and nation can alter things, including choosing a wife. Alliances can be made, battles fought, etc. Very good. Fully worth the money and I can't wait until the next one.

An absolute WONDER of a book. Never have I seen games like this to be so expounded and full of lore. It has a wide variety of decisions and outcomes. It's also one of those games where it adapts a lot of things from the old times(Medieval specifically), but still makes it look so simple that the majority of readers are aware of and understands what is happening. Definitely a five star game😉😉😉😉😉

Really good, probably within the top 3 choice game I've ever played. Even small decisions impact the whole story. Best of all is the replayability, you can play this at it's best at least 3 times (one for each stat) and even more if you factor in the factions, personality, history, etc. Highly suggest it. Can't wait for the sequel.

What's the point in having multiple save slots if you can't actually load different playthroughs that you saved?

It's a good game with many choices to make. It even gives you the option to cheat or manipulate your stats (money, morale, even your people's disposition) if you want. It just requires you pay for the full game after two months pass in the game. This is why I give it four stars. If I could play the full game definitely five stars. EDIT / I bought full version awhile back now so its 5 stars and a whole lots of fun. Advice to players don't give in to terrorists, cultists, or crazy people.

So far I love the game! Many great ways to go about it. Only one complaint and one bug: I find that although you can attend court, their is not much extracurricular activities to do after you finish the first few options, which was a little disappointing. The bug which I just ran into not to long ago is during the religion creation it gives you the option to go back and pick your choices again. Bad part about it is that some of the previous choices disappear. A bug fix for that would be awesome

The only critique I have of the game is that it is a little buggy. Two cases in point: One if choose an option, such as go to the library, but you have already read all books and scrolls, the time advances, even if your character accomplished nothing. Second, with randomized events, such as the number of troops you train, or the hand you are dealt in cardeed, you can reset them by checking your stats and returning to the game. Other than that simply awesome. Play it and immerse yourself.

The game was pretty good, if a bit short (about two-three hours for my latest playthrough). Writing is pretty good, I look forward to a sequel. Character designs could use some refinement, mostly art wise. Shading and color would help, maybe a bit more stylized art in general. But that's aside from the story. Still occasionally find random new bits, like a certain romance at the end. Overall a good buy.

I'll preface this by saying this is a fantastic story with a great deal of player freedom (for a text game) and wildly varying end game states to carry over to the next game. Another review likened it to a text version of Crusader Kings, and that hits pretty close to home. That being said, it isn't without it's flaws (mostly of a technical nature) and the game becomes somewhat increasingly frustrating to play the more subsequent playthroughs you put into it (at least if you're like me and like chasing that "perfect" end game state to carry over to a sequel). ***Potential spoilers past this point*** So, at it's core, the final objective of the game is either to survive until the end in one form or another, or if you die, to leave behind an heir that will carry on in your stead. There are a great deal of ways to achieve either of these objectives which can lead to a boatload of different endgame states depending on your choices. Where the experience becomes marginally more frustrating is in the chasing of certain endgame states, for two reasons: the random nature of the "Hold Court" events, and the lack of a save system that lets you keep multiple files (or at least one that is visible to the player). For folks who just want to play the game and enjoy the randomness of it these things work fantastically as is, but players who enjoy building specific endgame states to carry over (and to a lesser extent achievement hunters) will find these two points frustrating to some degree. This is particularly true in the endgame section; there are multiple "bad ends" that allow you to reload a save, however there are also a few "bad ends" that don't count as such when completing the game, and reaching these endings will force you to play the entire game over from the start if you got a result you didn't like, since the game seemingly deletes your save once you reach an ending (which circles back to the issue of not being able to keep multiple saves as well). As said, the inability to keep saves for multiple characters is certainly a significant demerit for a game that was designed with a sequel already in mind, and the inability to manipulate when certain events proc will be something of an annoyance for save chasers and achievement hunters, but all in all I feel this is one of the best Choice games out there and despite my gripes I still think it is most certainly a must play.

Great game with an interesting story. I would recommend this to others. Only problem is a couple of bugs and logic errors. SPOILERS AHEAD For example near the end of the game we were voting who would become the new ruler of a new western kingdom. I got two votes and the others only for one vote each but it said it was a tie??? Another example is when characters who have been killed come back to life. Other than that it's a great game. Worth the money.

Excellent story, and has wide variety of choices and paths. It kept me wanting more, never failing to stop surprising me; honestly, it had me frustrated when I continued to get ends that weren't in my favor, but that's what kept me coming back as well. It has a "Long Live The Queen" feel to it, but much more vast and incredibly immersive. I HIGHLY recommend this, and can't wait for the next game!

I really love it! I myself love games that have sword fighting, epic battles internal and external conflicts Allies to have and enemies to make, but I only want one thing to extend it, instead of 2 months, make it 3 or maybe 4 I just hate when there are huge events that must have a lot of time to complete, and it comes late too, here is an example, the purple falling star, why in the end? So please, please, make it at least 3 months.

The game has great potential and in my experience was really fun. The only thing that is keeping me from rating this higher is because of one single horrendous bug. Anytime I feel the need to check my stats when I'm not on the main menu, I run the risk of having my entire run completely wiped with the saying "The game has updated. Restarting chapter." All my stats are still there, but I'm forever stuck on the stats menu and the only way for me to play again is to restart everything from zero.

A. G. u. Dec 9, 2019

Great game, Just buggy. The screen freeze and then 'update' bug sucks, but figured out that to avoid the game from restarting, you need to stop tapping the screen whenever it froze and just wait for the next page to load eventually, and when the game's starting to load pages wierd, exit the game and play again. Still annoying as hell, especially at the start when I didn't know this and lost multiple playthroughs. Otherwise really fun and engaging game.

A. G. u. Feb 9, 2020

The game itself is amazing! But the reason for the lower score is a game-breaking bug, that I have encountered, wherein you are stuck in the stats page (both the gameplay page and stats are exactly the same) and when you try to get out of it, it says "The game has updated. Restarting chapter." And you are doomed to restart

A. G. u. Jan 4, 2020

I really enjoy the game and like different possibilities that can arise during any playthrough. However, I can never manage to play the game all the way through because of the big that puts you in the stats menu and keeps you there away from the actual game. Until that gets fixed I don't think the game is really as satisfying as I think it can be.

A. G. u. Mar 8, 2020

Honestly I liked the game quite a bit, but I think it could have used a lot of work towards the end, and it feels like it all builds up to nothing. The ending being abrupt and no storyline after becoming king was quite disappointing. Also I feel that there should be different outcomes for certain events like the tournament, there should be different outcomes, and different winners instead of everytime it ending early. I did still enjoy the game I just think there could be many improvements.

A. G. u. Feb 25, 2020

Love the concept, good balance between detail and meaningful choices, in contrast to other games of this sort filled with droning dialogues and decisions that more or less lead to the same outcome. All that said, of you decided to purchase the game, AVOID THE STATS SCREEN IF YOU CAN, as there is a glitch where you will be trapped and unable to continue the game.

A. G. u. Dec 2, 2019

It was a fun game and their was a lot to do in it i spent a lot of time on this and yet even with the cheats i couldnt find an actual really good ending. Also the fact that you can save the game but once you get to the end you have to restart all of it makes it even harder. Especially when it takes a few hours just to reach most endings. Overall its a nice game that needs some development and fixes.

Tri. M. May 29, 2020

I saved a game not long after a bug made me stuck in the show stats screen and forced me to restart and not only that my save was deleted. Trash. I did the demo and that worked better. This shouldn't even be a problem for how long it was being worked on and then the amount of time since release. BS is what this is and I payed almost 8 dollars. Thanks for that.

A. G. u. Mar 31, 2020

Originally had a post about gameplay and such, but I feel as though I must address the other reviews. 1) It warns you several times you have to pay for it. 2) It's not short, it takes about two hours to finish the game. It'a not overpriced: ~485,000 words. 3) People complaining about there being one ending and you can't change that. Completely wrong. They probably changed one choice near the end. There are easily ten endings. 4) For the stuck on stats glitch, just close the app or wait a second.

A. G. u. Jan 26, 2020

I loved it, I ended up more invested in it than I at first thought. I don't regret at all spending money on it, I love the cheat system they have if you just wanna explore different endings. The only negative to this was that it didn't really do a good job at explaining thing properly, didn't really tell you when you were done upgrading stuff or when you had the option of entering a special conversation with someone.

A. G. u. Dec 29, 2019

The first two thirds were pretty good, but the last chapter was really bad. One thing I don't like that much is that there are some options where you just die without really knowing it beforehand. But what is worst is the big summit at the end. A.) it is not logically structured. For example I killed a person, two minutes later he still fights me. B.) It seems like there is exactly one way that works out good for you. I had to load four times to get it, playing through that siege as well.

Honestly this is a fun game but there is a bug that ruins my experience. After about an hour or two the game "updates" and I'm stuck on the stats screen. Even in airplane mode where that is impossible. Not only that but this has happened 3 times. Sadly this not worth the money right now. (Edit I am happy that they have accknowleged the problem and are currently working on it.)

This is a good choice game. It is great (essential) to have save/load option, which this game has! But endings are so bad, that I replayed it many times and I don't find any of them satisfying. It just ruins everything else: the interesting story, fine plot, cool characters... Without the proper ending, it is not worth it.

A. G. u. Mar 26, 2020

The game, so far, is good, with a lot of unespected surprises. Yet, it feels kind of lineal since the starting skills formula seems settled. And, most of all, the game, sometimes, shows a box saying that it's updated and therefore restarted… when i'm in the middle of a run… I'm willing to change my rating if posterior runs shows i'm wrong and if the reboot bug is fixed. Salud.

Very nicely written! So easy to spend hours going through this and trying to get all the different outcomes. Worth the $6 for the hard work of the writers. My only complaint is that some of the outcomes don't seem to match my previous decisions in the same playthrough. Like in one, someone helped me escape a scenario, but then ended up betraying me? When that wasn't a storyline at all in that playthrough? Idk, just seemed like a broken pathway. Overall though, great story! Sequel???

This game is fine. It was fun to read and follow the story and choose the way I wanted up to the purchase point. Of course I did, I wanted to continue and I've downloaded many of your other games. Loved them too. What I absolutely despise about this one is pretty far into the story once you defeat the enemy house you are forced to follow a narrative that if you hadn't prepared for far earlier you will die basically no matter what and it sends you back before the war even begins. At least 30 min

"Sarding" beautiful! If you don't know what "sard" means, then I'd reccomend to read this interactive novel because it's one of the most ambitious and well developed I've ever read/played. I had a really great time reading it and every playthrough feels different thanks to so many possible outcomes. Thanks to the writer and the devs, for half the cost of a movie ticket I had more fun than in many of the movies I've seen in recent years
