An excellent digital version of one of the best strategy board games in existence. If you don't like playing against online opponents, the single-player challenges are complex and interesting, and the AI is no slouch. Minor changes to the rules have a huge impact on the results and demonstrate just how carefully and masterfully balanced this game truly is. I've played for over a decade and haven't tired of this game. I can't say that's true of many other titles. Bravo CGE.
Great game! We have the board version as well as the expansion pack. The major problem is the severe lag in time when playing into the 4th age. It used to be simultaneous but now the AI takes some time to get through their turns. You should have the option to turn off AI play in settings and not have to 'wait for them to take their turn' you can always click on them to see what they did differently, but for players who aren't interested in the AI moves this would be a good feature.
fun so far, but sometimes when i click on certain cards it would shut down my game. i most recently noticed it with "breakthrough" even though it had worked before. every other card was fine and tried restarting, but no matter what, when i clicked "breakthrough" the game would close. hopefully it's not all this buggy. edit: they fixed it! plus they seem to do a good job of working on problems when they arise. 5/5
Fantastic adaptation of a great board game. The online options are great, and the tutorial does a great job teaching you how to play. The online mode does suffer from numerous technical problems: the servers aren't stable and I often have issues connecting, the push notifications for your turn only work about 10% of the time, and the on screen keyboard won't often render when i try to send someone a message unless i completely close the game and re-open it.
I couldn't imagine a better port of a dense board game to an app. The gameplay is spot on and I prefer this over the board game, especially considering the lack of management needed to keep up with all the moving parts. I would like to see the AI improved. It is like playing a bad chess engine. It either makes obvious mistakes, or it plays perfectly and feels unbeatable, even at the medium difficulty.
One of the best board games available on the Play Store, I would rate it up there with 7 Wonders & Twilight Struggle for sheer enjoyment. An in-depth Civ-like game that can be finished in about half an hour, though different enough to not feel like a Civ copy. The biggest difference is that upgrading every technology you ever see, like would in Civ, is not the path to victory. You have to pick and choose given the time constraints, which gives High replayability.
Civ without the hexes, herding units and waiting around for something interesting to happen. Buttery smooth UI and controls, competent and challenging AI, online and asynchronous multiplayer for up to four players and one of the best tutorials I've ever enjoyed. I love that the path to victory is never the same so it's very much about opportunism and keeping a close eye on your opponents. It's crazy how much they've managed to squeeze in here and how polished it all is. Highly recommended.
Great digital implementation of the board game with solid AI and fun challenges. The tutorial is great and there's lots of replayability to be had. I've got at least a hundred hours of play so far and likely more to come. Definitely well worth the purchase! Edit: just got the expansion and boy was it worth it. This game definitely has legs. Still playing it two years later and certainly more in the future. Shout out to CGE for a terrific digital implementation of a classic game!
As a single player game, this is terrific. The ai is challenging and the game itself is well implemented. The multiplayer experience is a mixed. For the most part, things are stable, the ui is good, there are plenty of players and games running, but there are still an unusually large number of server connection problems for a mobile game that's this expensive. Disappointing for a $10 app.
The UI is well done and everything runs smoothly. If you are new to the game itself I found the learning curve to be a bit steep in terms of using combos and only recently started winning some games. But the ability to play games at you own pace is very nice and creates nice distractions during the day :). It's worth getting this one, the depth and variety ensure for very good replayability.
I like this game when it works, but I've had several bugs that made the gameplay hard and now make online gameplay impossible. 1. The game will frequently freeze which does not allow me to click any buttons. This happened most often when I tried to load a game online. 2. I cannot use my keyboard in the game to type messages: the bottom of the screen opens up like there would be a keyboard, but it's just black. 3 (and definitely the worst). When I click "Online Game" I get stuck at a loading screen (it says "Connecting...") indefinitely. This happens 9/10 times I open the game, making it nearly unplayable. This game is $10, I would like my money back.
Through The Ages seems very involved but once you start playing it becomes very intuitive and the tutorial from the app is great to learn. The challenges makes the game have huge replayability since they offer very different experiences. The AI is greatly done. Hard AI is hard!!! The interface of the app makes it very smooth to play and it's easy to check both my statistics and the statistics of my opponents to make decisions on my turn. The game and the app are great. I also love the expansion.
This app is made so very well and does a great job capturing the feel of the board game on your phone. Almost my first 5 star review, but the are a few bugs: can't connect to online servers unless I'm on Wi-Fi, and clicking certain things while the CPU is playing can cause the screen to stay dark for some time. Highly recommend the app though!
The most complex game I've played. It took watching the tutorial a few times coupled with watching a five hour playthough of the tabletop version on YouTube for me to win against the AI on "Easy" mode, but was so worth it in the end. It's remarkable that it manages to be just as fun as Resident Evil 7 while having 1/100000000th of its graphics. In other words, highly recommended!
This app is perfect. A faithful translation of the board game with nothing missing. Handles the fiddly bits effortlessly. Gorgeous visuals and very well designed UI. Packed with content ensures hundreds of hours of replayability. And top notch AI that will beat the snot out of you (if you want it to...). I play a lot of board games, and I play a lot of board game apps. This is the best one.
For me, the best digital ver. of heavy weighted board game. The AI can be fun if you are a beginner, and there are some challanges too for advanced player. The only thing that lacking from this game is its matchmaking, your opponent may is more experienced than you in many ways, while you just got into this game, i find that really harsh. But overall, this is a success "board game into digital"
The boardgame itself is great, and the app is perhaps even greater. It handles all of the boring stuff (upkeep, income, etc...) And displays all information in an easy, intuitive way. You can play online versus your friends in either android or ios , in assynchronous mode, and it works really well. One of the best (if not the best) app for a boardgame.
Very impressive! The most perfect board game port to mobile! The humor of the tutorial keeps it from becoming tedious, since there is quite a bit of information to communicate to a new player. Possible actions are easy to identify, which makes it a bit easier for a new player to feel comfortable they are not missing an important play. Stats are easily accessible. Every detail seems very well thought out! An all-around great game! The expansion makes the game even better! Download now!
Great! Picked this up on sale for $5 but worth full price. This does everything the board game does but better. All the calculations and book keeping are done for you. Everything is streamlined and simple to understand and control. It makes an 3-4 hr board game version experience take about 1hr instead. I picked it up because I was having a hard time finding time to set up and get any games in with the board game. The AI is fun enough. Expansion here I come!
Excellently made, lads. I just wish it was more customizable. I'd love to play the longer eras or immortal leaders with multiple people, for instance. One issue is with resignations. You could be behind in culture, you then decide to throw everything into a War Over Culture for a Hail Mary attempt to win the game, or at least get second place. Then out of spite the player resigns, and you get a measly 7 culture. From a strategical point of view you played brilliantly for the last shot at victory, but it's punished all because you declared war on a player who isn't tenacious. I think it'd be fairer for it to take one full turn to resign. In this scenario, when a player resigns, the AI takes over. Then in the politics phase of the next turn the player is fully eliminated from the game. EDIT: newest update makes it nearly impossible to go online, and I get no notifications.
Fantastic game. The tutorial is a entertaining (if a little confusing) but there are plenty of video tutorials of the actual board game which can help as the app is a faithful rendition (with the bonus that all the maths is done for you and you have nice clear visuals of what you've built and where you're at in your progress). Loved it. Hooked. Best £9 I've spent on apps.
Excellent game and excellent adaptation to mobile gaming (as it is originally a tabletop game). The game itself a known and well-respected strategy tabletop game. As for the app, it is visually pleasing, highly intuitive, has good sounds and music, a tutorial and vs. AI modes that give you a very solid introduction, and online matches that can be played at various speeds, from a few minutes per turn, to taking as long as you like, such ad a turn a day. It has my full recommendation.
This game is so well executed, I wouldn't be able to tell this is a board game port from playing the game. The learning curve can feel steep (helped by the excellent tutorial), but the reward of learning all the mechanics is beyond any other game I've seen in the genre. This is the only game on mobile I keep coming back to. The only frustrating part is that I wish I was better at selling it so I could involve more people I know to play with.
Now fixed! == This famous popular boardgame has been implemented almost perfectly! 1) Multiplayer online suffers from network problems 10--20% of the time, from timing bugs to showstopping crashes. 2) Although a surprising amount of information has been squeezed onto handset, this game would be better suited for tablet with large screen. 3) Most negative reviewers complain that the AI opponent is too hard. Of course, this difficult strategy game has a steep learning curve but is quite rewarding!
This is without doubts *the best* digital adaptation of a boardgame. The UI is terrific and all the info you need are always clearly displayed. Tons of options between online and offline games with amazing AI and surprisingly funny and engaging tutorial. App is not *amazing* in terms of battery drain and it does stutter a bit during the end game phases but besides that, the game is a gem.
I love it. Probably one of the best applications for Android period, board game or otherwise. Runs smoothly. Tons of options. Really great game. One suggestion: the challenge mode has such interesting gameplay variations, I'd love to be able to make custom games with those sorts of modifiers.
