Didn't play the original incarnation, so this review reflects the latest version. The game design, concept and graphics are all good, but the gameplay is quite deceiving. You are lured into a false sense of success with a slew of new cards, and easy opponents. However, once the gold runs dry, and your lock boxes are less plentiful, you begin to lose the ability to level your cards. On top of this, you begin to lose most of your matches, losing levels, because your opponents conveniently have much higher level cards than you (read: not real players, but A.I. designed to force you to spend). This is a money sink, and not really complex enough of a game to make it worth paying for.

What happened to the retro graphics and the old gameplay?! I loved it! It all changed in a single update and its now a card collecting game! It lost all its charm! Can this be a seperate game instead of getting rid of the old trench assault? I realize you put a lot of effort into the game and i appreciate the passion, but all of the charm is gone. All the strategy and simplicity of the old game. I miss it.

You had such a good game. When I saw that the game had been updated I was excited, what did they add more levels, new units, or a different game mode. Once I opened it I realized after jokingly playing that game that felt like the steryotipical interactive mobile ads that I was playing the game it's self, completely different from what I used to love playing. It doesn't even involve trenches anymore. The gameplay as previously eluded to has been changed drastically to unoriginal, boring, and redundant. Just having the previous game changed to require an online would've been annoying enough but at least it would've still been a good game.

I enjoyed putting a few hours into this game before bed each night, relaxing and using some sense of strategy. Fast forward a few months later when I'm able to get on my phone regularly again, and I don't know what happened, but some huge overhaul was made that nearly made this a different game altogether. Now I'm facing opponents that spam level 12-14 fast moving troops against my level 2 and 3s without any strategy. Can't win anymore, but I don't want to play anymore even if I could win.

I only played this update for 2 minutes. I really wanted to love this game. I played this when it was in its pixelated form and I loved every moment of it. The pixel-style combined with the very intense moments of trying to take control of the enemy line was so much fun! So when I saw, randomly through my games folder, that the game was updated, I was thrilled! I didn't care about the style overhaul, if anything I considered it a bonus; I assumed it would have been a total remake of the original Trench game. It's not. It's your typical game that involves two currencies, one more valuable than the other, it has crates that take time to unlock, and the animations are lackluster at best. Was the original primitive? Yes. But it worked. It was ORIGINAL. It was FUN. THIS is a total cash grab that I will no longer support. If the developers want to make an actually good game again, ditch the in-app purchase currencies and ditch the crates. Am I against in-app purchases? Absolutely not. But make them worthwhile. Make them expansions to the game that add unique features/settings to the game while keeping the meta. Am I against the style? Absolutely not. But if you're going to "update" the graphics, go all out. Make the animations actually impressive and immersive, not clearly noticeable gifs. It disappoints me that an (albeit pixelated and primitive) game that I had so much fun with turned into a total cash grab.

It's great don't get me wrong, I love the visual upgrade and game mechanics and the effort redesigning the game and gameplay but If only the release it as a separate app and I kinda don't like the "you have to be online to play this game." idea. I win and I lose rarely but If they re-release the classic version I would be happy! The challenge of what to deploy to suppress the garrisoned building or destroy the bunker was hella fun. So if the devs are really listening, re-release the old one.

Wow, this game sure changed. Used to be a nice little 90s 2d pixel arty game about trench warfare. Now its been completely overhauled into a card based strategy game. So far i think i like it, but I do miss the old 90s style that it left. I genuinely didnt expect it to change in its dev path, and i thought it would stick with the nice little retro style. Impressive amounts of work must've been done to completely overhaul the gameplay, graphics and add the card element and even it out. Im impressed, but i think it just isnt as good as it used to be.

Super game, but it's rather pay to win. Without gold you must wait many hours to open treasures. There is no way around it. Also I would like to play against my friends and there isn't option to invite someone to match. Edit: It doesn't automatically save your account, so after reinstalling I've lost all my progress. I've also lost all the money I invested in the game. Very disappointed, not playing again.

Ever since the update I have been surprised on how fast the game shifted from a retro WW1 battle game into a card game that requires internet. The older version had an interesting style that me and my friends enjoyed and it's sad to see it go away. I was hoping that there is some way the dev could have the old version and this new version as separate games if need be.

Wil. C. Nov 1, 2018

No campaign mode, no trenches or bunkers. WW2 is repetitive, it's been shoved down our throats enough. Why not keep the WW1 feel. And besides, why cards. Why. Just why? The game just needed better pixel art, keeping the same style. A progressive unit unlocking system. And ranked multiplayer. This? This is the absolute opposite of what I hoped for.

Game often disconnects, cifing poor network even when that's not the case. And whenever the game disconnects, you lose medals, that's annoying. Ads are also much, way much. I have played Evony, top game with lots of interesting features. unfortunately, this game competes in data consumption I top in most active, and if this is not resolved, i might uninstall.

Pat. M. Nov 6, 2018

I think you play bots. Maybe not every match but the way it plays has me skeptical. Ive lost literally every other match since the update. Ive also noticed you cant play lan matches anymore. The way you unlock new items also seems like a money grab. You need gold to open more than one box. So there isnt really a point in having slots for more than one box at a time. And the wait to open these boxes are pretty donk. And the victory box refresh is also lengthy. So you can wait a really long time to make minimal progress, or you can pay to win. The way it was before the update was just fine.

Gonna keep this short. The new update has trashed this game and forced it into a box, or at least the players into one as while it expands gameplay in a certain way it the change also kneecapped a lot of other players. Currently you either have an army that can pump out troops and tanks at an expeditious rate, or end up struggling to put anything out at all. It seems you are forced into those places, and it's not really easy to just keep playing either due to having to pay in game cash to match

Love the game, only one problem. It keeps saying "No internet connection" randomly at a rate of once every 2 minutes average... I've tried restarting my phone, using mobile data and then using wifi and no matter what I do it keeps acting the same way. I have 4G LTE and mid/top of the line internet service. None of my other games do this. The internet connection issue seems to be more so apart of this game's ability to detect my internet connection. Please look into this. Like I said, love the game. Just wish Icould actually play it. For the record I'm playing on a Galaxy Note 8. 5 stars once this issue is fixed. thanks

The latest update, which took place on Octobter 25th, absolutely ruined the game. Before, it was a beautiful, simple, charming 8-bit game set during WWI in which you had to cross no man's land to the enemy's base trench or hold the last trench for a set amount of time. Now, it's a disgusting Clash Royale knock off set during WWII. I used to love this game, but the last update turned it into a completely different and abysmal game. There aren't even any trenches, as the name suggests! I uninstalled it after I realized how awful this update was.

Edit: Spend money, or suffer in despair. You might be able to win at first, but the more you win, the more screwed you are unless you spend money to try and keep up—the Ad rewards are negligible; strategy be damned. Also, if you've got a limited high-speed data plan and have run out of the speed juice, don't bother watching the Ad if you get one that needs to buffer because you won't be getting your reward after you finally do finish watching it. It skips the selection and restarts the app.

I like the concept. But after getting past 800+ it seems I'm only paired up with users who somehow manage to mod the game. Gameplay is pretty unfair, and losing just one battle costs you way too many points. There is no incentive in this game. Great concept and if the game was better managed it would be great.

kjf. 3. Nov 1, 2018

I like it but... I miss the original style of the game. When I saw it got "upgraded" I was hoping it actually got upgraded; not became an entirely new game. The whole strategy of moving from trench to trench was pretty great, despite its simplicity. It was also offline which I was looking for in the first place.

For fear of sounding like the "Old Man who hates change," I really hate the new version of this game. The game use to be a 2D pixel art style game about breaking your enemies defensive line in a World War 1 setting, and had ads after levels. That game was thrown out the window it seems, as now it's a game about putting troopers, represented by cards, into one of three lanes to try entering the enemies base, now depicted in a generic modern military setting, and is loaded with microtransactions.

Nat. B. Nov 21, 2018

Just to be clear. You don't have to pay to win. It's strategy. I've topped the leader board without paying. It's actually quite addictive. I do want to upgrade my lower end cards more however. The better the cards you play with the harder the opposition which is AI not real. The opposition strategy is always the same. Stick with the easier cards and work out a strategy. I would appreciate rewards for being top 3 of the leader board each week for example. Gold/cash. (Bel3021)

I really like this game. Great gameplay and graphics and tactical thinking. I'm progressing well without having to pay (I refuse to pay). The only and biggest annoyance is the constant ads after every battle! Which is really boring - if anything's going to make me delete this game it's the constant ads. Reduce the ads and I'll give full stars.

Ron. J. Dec 6, 2018

This latest update makes the game unplayable.. I get as far as the main screen Trench Assault, but then an error pops up that says The game resources cannot be downloaded. Hope ya fix it soon, the update sounds cool. To add to my review I think this game is pretty fun and trying different tactics on opponents with different troops is a big part of it. I have a card idea also: *Trench Foot - when this card is played the opponent can only use vehicle cards for a certain amount of time.

Kim. May 19, 2019

I have been playing this game since November 2018 and it had always been 5 stars for me. But ever since the latest update, I rarely go on anymore. I really didn't mind watching an ad to do an upgraded box after every battle but now they are all 3 hour boxes. I'm a high rank in this game and it's already hard enough as it is to upgrade my cards/troops. Now it will take absolutely forever to even upgrade a lower star card rating by only 3 hour boxes. I'm considering uninstalling.

The game is phenomenal. However, there's certain units that are far too overpowered. For example, the rocket launcher unit. It claims itself as a legendary (very rare) card but I see everyone have it. I'll deploy literally 2 tanks, snipers and basic info try and that ONE UNIT (of my same rank, mind you) kills ALL of them. It's disgusting. Besides that, the gameplay is amazing and straightforward yet addictive. I'd recommend it. However, there should be a better system of matchmaking besides those medals, it's not very accurate
