Twinkly

It has room for improvement, BUT at the moment this is still the BEST smart lighting app. No weird issues while trying to connect the lights, my device was found immediately and the effects in the app are just stunning, no delay to turn on/off. Although this app is really good some features aren't, like the mapping feature, which never works properly + the music feature is lacking. Furthermore it would be cool for you to make a lightbulb.

Get rid of the music moods, go back to the drivers... Especially the diamond swirl driver and the VUmeter. The moods are terrible compared to the original... Worst thing I ever did was update my firmware. Hasn't been the same since. I've tried reaching out to twinkly customer support but never received a response. Disappointing.

Way more options needed and ability to customise with Android devices and other platforms. The technology is there, undeniably the best, but much more focus needs to go to customisable graphic and video conversion. Think of the endless possibilities being able to use Twinkly lights as a photo frame or video show...ahh? 🤔 Still, incredible to other competitors.

I noted that many people are reviewing the product not the app, and that's not right. I love the product but this review is just for the app. In general the latest version (today is apr 2, 2022) does a lot of things right. There are a few oddities, especially when using the music dongle where the settings page randomly switches to gen 2 mode and back to gen 1, and a few other annoyances where it wouldn't detect new available effects until i force-closed the app. I also had that happen a couple of times when detecting devices. But as i said in general, it works pretty well. Effects, unless special, can in general be edited. Colors can be changed, layers can be made. I'm not sure what the purpose of area vs one group is as you get the same result. I would also love to be able to put different effects on each half of a split string. Finally, the ios app allows you to add text, but the android one is missing this obvious feature and it's actually driving people to write custom software to replace the feature. Possibly a bigger annoyance is the wifi strings are nerfed on purpose to make the wired pro strings more desirable. If you own a pro controller, you don't even have to use it. The app will unlock new features for the home edition lights.

I hope I'm missing something and will gladly bump the rating if this feature exists. Why can I not save my patterns within the app as opposed to the device. I had to recreate all of my patterns on the new device.

PRO Version won't work on Android 12. I was very excited to get these leds... and even more excited to see that there is an Android app. Previously I was told this only works on Apple devices. I am trying to get a 4s iPhone to work but that is another story. Why won't PRO work with external wifi, PRO device wifi, or bluetooth?

Terrible. Frustrating to no end. Constantly disconnects from wifi. Have to factory reset whenever you want to change the pattern. Of course, I contacted Customer Service before leaving a review. It was a multi-day conversation confirming that everything was up-to-date, used correctly, and a video of the problem was sent. I gave up on Twinkly helping when they wanted "a video where we can also see what happens on the app when you apply the effects?" It seemed I was their support at that point and they had no idea how to help with their product. Nice looking tree, fun effects when they work, but I've never been so frustrated with something not working before in my life.

I've never been able to give this app more than 1 star. Of the past three years, this year is the worst. Extremely difficult to get light strings connected to a network, and I can't get all strings connected. They always say it's something you're doing wrong or it's your network. Every other wifi device in the house works just fine. Twinkly is the only thing not working well. If the app worked properly you wouldn't have the huge number of bad ratings that you have this year. It's you Twinkly.

Ok, there seems to be some improvement with certain functions with each update, but there are still many issues to be fixed. Saving custom creations with any duration longer than 5 seconds is problematic at best and the fact that attempting to create custom patterns or playlists often results in crashes or errors is a no-go at this point. At this point, I'd rather buy addressable pixels with necessary software and bypass all of this nonsense with the Twinkly app. There really is no excuse now.

Update: I contacted Twinkly support regarding this issue. They took all the various information about the issue, and then informed me that it can't be fixed because it's a hardware defect. The only change between last year and this year is the app version, so it being a hardware issue makes no sense. Because my device is "out of warranty" (despite being defective by their admission), their only proposed solution so far has been to offer a 25% discount on a new device. Impossible to get gen 1 tree to connect to WiFi network. An error occurs, then the tree stops broadcasting its network, but never connects to the home network. A hard reset of the tree is required to try again, but this step never completes. I tried leaving the tree in Direct mode, but the SSID seems to have disappeared regardless. This wasn't the case last year, but now the device is completely unusable.

We've had these lights for 3 years now. The previous versions of the app have worked in group modes fine. This latest version of the app remembered the group and in preview of colors works great, but when you apply, it forgets the larger strand and reverts to white. One strand the color you want and the other white. I feel as though the app gets worse while features we want are not added. Help function isn't working either, so having to rate here. I have contacted support. No resolution.

This year I had a lot of problems with the application and the installation, first of all the installation broke down, as far as I understood or burned some components inside. The application does not work properly, it moves by itself from closed to open and vice versa, if I want to set the brightness it bothers me a lot until I succeed because it moves continuously on on off. In principle, very disappointed with the product and the application.

Works great when it works at all, but communication issues within virtual groups are way too often now. Sometimes when you apply a pattern some light sets will have it applied successfully, some won't - depends on the pattern itself and.. random luck, I suppose. Same with scheduling - 2 of 3 sets will turn on at set hour, but at the "off" hour they will turn off with the other one turning on. I shouldn't have to maintain my lights every single day. My WiFi is strong and super stable.

App just doesn't work. I have set up my lights numerous times and each time I get to a point where the app just sits there 'compiling' and never finishes. Nothing I do can then get out of it and I end up having to completely wipe everything and start again. Not fun nor worth all the money I have spent on multiple sets of lights!! Edit - the issue seems to be caused by a few of the downloaded effects, the problem being, once you have downloaded the problematic one it's game over.

I can only give it one star, lost of the time there are connection issues. The GUI is often out of sync, for example when I select the Christmas tree and go to the settings to change the brightness, the whole page is out of sync, it seems offline while it is actually online. The GUI is also unlogical . For example there is the main app settings where there is nothing except for a carrousel. In devices you can see for each device also a settings button, but only for the name and wifi...

Latest version of app won't connect my new lights. Nokia 5.4 with latest Android. I love my twinkly lights, and the app had been getting better. The thing for making your own effects is getting better. But when editing the new ambience effects it's too easy to mess it up and not be able to get back to the original. When I got them last year it was impossible to set them up using my Motorola phone but once I got them on the router using another device it was ok.

Loved this light for the past 4 years but not sure what has happened this year! I've reset the lights twice and re-downloaded the app twice but still having issues. App is showing lights are off when on and vice versa. Won't let me set a custom light arrangement and when it does set, it flickers every few seconds. Lights won't join to the WiFi....... what's going on? Other reviews are saying the same. Sort it out twinkly!!

I love twinkly, I've used them basically since they launched and I have multiple sets. HOWEVER there is a significant glitch that happens when trying to connect the lights on to your own wifi network that has been present for years. At the moment the app is switching from the twinkly network to my own home network it will alert me to change to the new network, which my phone will automatically do. At that moment it can glitch and cause an error and not register the new wifi. Please fix

Google home integration has inexplicably stopped working. It can still see the status of the lights, but turning them on or off does not work. Also, during setup, the app does not take into account that the same wifi can have BOTH 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels, the app stubbornly locks up setup, unless your phone is on the 2.4Ghz channel too, even though both are the same LAN and would, SHOULD, work perfectly fine.

Lights are awesome. App is a bit pants. Seems more stable on IOS. Crashes a lot when saving custom lighting fx. You spend time creating the effect, click save and the app just closes down, losing what you have created. Can get frustrating and I have now given up. Could do with more pre built effects to download, perhaps a way to share custom fx with others (assuming you can save it!).

Amazing. Gorgeous. So much potential. I love the app's light-mapping and how bright and dim it gets. It has some neat Effects but the limited tool to create them frustrates me. Works with Google Home / Assistant, but not for Effects. I'd thought there was a Twinkly online community where we could share the Effects we create, but not yet; the only option to find more is their currently-free TWINKLY EFFECTS STORE. There aren't that many to download and many have limited or no ability to customize.

Keeping twinkly linked to my Google Assistant has been troublesome. It was only just two days ago when I relinked my account for the 10th time and now today it isn't working at all and I try to sign in and it says it cannot reach twinkly. Plus, I have now just discovered that the bubbly effect freezes my app to where I have to clear all data in order for it to work again. So something is wrong with the download for that effect.

Fired up the tree, lights up beautifully. But the app is stuck in a perpetual loop in "compiling effects for the tree " utter garbage coding. Can only select patterns via the power box and cycle thru the patterns there. What a huge waste of money. Should have bought a regular pre-lite tree if I knew that this is what is would have amounted to. Stay clear. [Galaxy Z Fold 3 is where the app is installed on]

Terrible. This app is forever compiling every time I try to change the look of the lights. The lights themselves are brilliant if only the app worked. I have also tried downloading different styles of light colours from twinkly, I have given up because it takes up to 45 minutes before it compiles to my phone, so in the end I give up uninstall the app re install and can only use what comes with the app re different light shows.

led lighting is great but the application is very immature. the 20 seconds hardcoded limit to save effects on board is gamebreaking. i tried to workaround this limitation using playlists but seamless transitions are almost impossible since there are no time references in app. for example, setting a slow gradient at full zoom from red to white, it does not start at full red but yellowish, and fine tuning shift is impossible. i would not advise to buy twinkly at the present state.

While it can be tedious to map out a large 3D installation, the results are astonishing. By far my most beloved decoration of all time. This stuff rocks!

the app is ridiculous to connect to. the first time we connected last year it was great but since the update it's terrible and I can't imagine getting any other twinkly devices. it's constantly disconnecting from the tree and I've given up, I'm spending so much time trying to fix it.

In November we had a string of lights stop working after a firmware update. A hard reset does not work. The sting is dead. No lights working at all. Twinkly said it could not be from the firmware update, it is a hardware defect. Twinkly is offering 25% off another set of lights. At the price of these lights they should last more than 2 Christmases. I love what the Twinkly lights do when the app isn't glitching. Extremely expensive lights if they have a short life span!

It would be cool if you could move individual lights. I've mapped my tree a number of times, but there always seems to be one light that thinks it's higher up than it is. Rather than remapping, being able to choose a single light and move it on the light map would be great.
