GENERAL UNION OF WORKERS - UGT is a civil association with undetermined duration period, with jurisdiction throughout the Brazilian territory and representation in all states. It is the highest degree of organization of union representation and aims to coordinate, represent and defend the rights and interests of workers.
It is a trade union formed from the unification of the General Workers Confederation union confederations - CGT, Social Democratic Union - SDS, Autonomous Workers Central - CAT and a large group of independent unions. The UGT was founded on July 19, 2007, during the National Workers' Congress held on 19, 20 and 21/07/07 in São Paulo, capital, and brought together more than 3,400 delegates representing 623 unions from around the country and more than 4 million workers, when he was elected the 1st national executive for a 4-year term with a national President, the union leader Ricardo Patah, president of the Commerce Union of São Paulo.
Established to defend the Brazilian workers across a broad trade union movement, national, ethical, supportive, independent, democratic and innovative. UGT defends unity in unionism and the right to free association and organization, aiming to build a peaceful social project, fair and democratic, human-centered, capable of offering answers and proposals to national problems.
