VDOT 511 Virginia Traffic
The Virginia 511 mobile application is the official source for traffic information from the Virginia Department of Transportation. A map based interface provides access to current and future road work, current incidents and traffic speeds, winter road conditions, scheduled bridge openings, and other events across the state. In addition, over 800 live video feeds are available to view in real-time from the state's roadside traffic cameras, with the ability to swipe to quickly move between cameras along a roadway.
The information, which is regularly and automatically updated from VDOT sources, is provided to the user both visually on the map, as well as through available voice alerts. The user can select basic mode, which limits visual feedback, and automatically provides voice alerts for upcoming events (in the next 5-15 miles) as the user travels down the road without interfacing with the device.
Current travel times are available for many pre-defined routes throughout the state, including all interstates and select primary routes. The user can select favorites from the list to view frequently traveled routes quickly and easily. A searchable list of road conditions is also available to view winter conditions, flooding impacts and other weather-related events for all interstate, primary and secondary routes maintained by VDOT throughout the state.
A “Reach The Beach” feature helps beach-goers by providing the latest travel times for multiple routes to and from Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks. As the user approaches a key decision point, the voice feature of the application will tell the user what the current travel times are from that point to the chosen destination via various options. When leaving the beach, the user can chose from one of four “Home “ destinations of Richmond, Fredericksburg, Skippers or Chesapeake.
Real-time commuting information is available for commuters along the I-95/395 corridor in Northern Virginia through the application. This feature includes a map with real-time traffic speeds along the I-95/395 HOV lanes, as well as real-time status of VRE trains. Detailed information is also provided on the map for PRTC commuter bus routes and schedules as well as available park and ride lots along the corridor. A trip planner is provided for travel time and speed comparisons between the regular and HOV lanes for user-selected origins and destinations along the corridor. The trip planner also provides the real-time VRE schedules and the scheduled options along the PRTC bus routes.
Finally, access to VDOT's 511 Twitter feeds is also provided, with tweets on traffic incidents available statewide or for specific regions or corridors.

fast & LEAN - for the better! Best suited to those using Interstate. Traffic cams load at different speeds and resolutions on different phones/tablets but overall pretty fast. iPad shows full screen and very good res while got to fight with it on my Droid. pretty good interactive and great to scan thru one cam right after another, up & down roadway. makes my commute decisions MUCH easier.
By far, the best traffic app in the nation. Too bad it's gone downhill. Often, alerts reporting disabled vehicles or crashes are way outdated or just flat wrong, and often do not show actual incidents that DO exist. Expect little to no support through their app... they're more responsive on Twitter.
New update excludes cameras! What good is the app now!
The introduction page cautions me "To be safe, do not use a hand-held cell phone while driving. Instead, use a hands-free accessory ", which is a pretty good argument FOR keeping the 1680 AM radio channel on the air, I'm only downloading this app because the radio station is going away, and am not very happy about it. What happened to this app? You took a really good working app and made it totally useless. The traffic cameras can't be viewed except in micro thumbnail. I can't even use it for a map because it's not accurate. For us that use the app when we travel through VA it's now useless if we can't see the traffic ahead of us on the cameras.
A push notification popped up on my notification bar and won't clear or go away. The only solution is to uninstall and reinstall. Really annoying with limited screen space.
"hands free" mode never works, and the app's map features are only useful for trip planning, if that. Otherwise, use Waze or call 511 from the PHONE app for a far better experience.
Great, but icons from incidents that happened days ago are still on the map. Very misleading, especially since people may not read the date. Will be 5 stats again once fixed.
Very well-built app. Reliable and very detailed info about road work and/or delays. Cameras load quickly and are very helpful when checking for backups on I81 or I64. Well done VDOT!!!
Thank you Iteris Inc for the fixes. I detected some added features I've not learned before. It appears to be working fine. I will find out more by next week. I will update my review accordingly.
I love your app it is awesome. I love being able to see and read how traffic is when i travel and when i go to work. Keep up the great work.
Doesn't give real time traffic info. Never correct on bridge life schedules and you stand a better chance of hitting the lottery than having the traffic cam feature working.
Used to be great! Had to reinstall and now it crashes every time i open it..... Cant use at all....
This app will not load anymore. I've uninstalled and reinstalled and it still does the same thing. Fix the problem.

Where's the legend? I see pretty colors on the roads, but no legend. That makes it useless.
These cams stream fast and give me quick info on the roads.
Kinda seems counterintuitive to shut down the radio station and force everyone to download an app on our phones and remind us we can't use our phones while driving, driving conditions can change in an instant and without any "hands free" capabilities u can't safely whip out ur phone and check to see if those driving conditions may have changed over the course of ur trip. If anything I feel like this will just add to the vast list of idiots playing on there phones while driving.
