Viaero CMAS Application

The Viaero Wireless Commercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS) Application enables Viaero Wireless subscribers with an android handset and data plan to receive emergency alerts broadcast by local or national authorities.
The application receives the following alerts:
- Presidential Alerts
- Extreme Imminent Threat Alerts
- Severe Imminent Threat Alerts
- Amber Alerts
- Required Monthly Test Alerts

Subscribers can opt in (default)or out of any or all alerts except for Presidential Alerts. Subscribers can also change the alert ringtone for each type of alert with the exception of Presidential Alerts.

Besides a Viaero Wireless data plan required with all android handset purchases, no additional fees are required to receive these alerts on the Viaero network. Depending on your data plan, messages received while roaming may incur roaming data charges. Visit your Viaero Wireless store or call 611 from your Viaero phone (1-877-484-2376 from any other phone) for more information.

I installed this app on my Sprint EVO 4G/HTC Supersonic about 3 weeks ago. It sat quietly in the background, not appreciably extending my battery life, until this afternoon, when a Required Monthly Test went off and knocked me out of my socks. :-) The FEMA Alert Noise, as it turns out, is the 5 tone burst of EAS data tones you hear when an EAS broadcast comes on the radio or TV, which I suppose is sensible. You can select whatever noise you want, except for the Presidential Alert, which you also cannot disable. I think CMAS/iPAWS is a great idea, and I recommend that every single Android owner find a way to receive these alerts from their carrier; my thanks to Viaero for putting this app in the store *and not locking it to specific hardware*. RFE: when I select an alert, the app should, like all others, *play the alert tone when I select it*; I had no way to know what the noise was going to be. Also, you should document whether it overrides all mutes; I will assume it does, which is good for all usage except tactical--if it will get you shot, you don't care about the tornado warning. Also, a "Wait 60 seconds, then simulate a [selectable alert" function would be handy.

I got this app to work on Page Plus, a Verizon MVNO. However, it seems to require a data connection to function, which is ridiculous for a supposed text only alert. Uninstalling in search of a better solution. Oh, and scanning for signs of Airpush yield nothing, so I think that reviewer is mistaken.
