I have used this app multiple times while visiting national forests in CO and UT. The new offline map and locate me features are great when lacking a data connection. When my cell signal is weak, I just put my phone into airplane mode. The app updates to disconnected mode quickly creating an almost seamless experience. In addition, most capabilities continue to work while offline including search and identify which is really helpful especially given the detail in the data set.
Keep improving! USFS created a very intuitive, user-friendly app, and solicits feedback! I love: - Speedy, smooth displays of map, while zooming/panning. - Forest Road descriptions with a tap on/near the road!! See what vehicles are allowed, whether high clearance is required, rough or paved, etc. Can't get that on USFS Motor Vehicle Use maps. - Touch & Hold "zoom circle" lets me read fine print, like road names, on maps. REQUEST: Make map Legend available at all times via button tap.
I had high hopes for this app but it has not been updated since May. It does a great job of showing you specifics about the national forest territories but with no offline maps, slow load times and quite a few crashes you are better off going with something else for now.
the map I believe is very excellant. shows places where to camp at, among other items that are very useful. maybe a nice feature would be able to download a portion of a map to your phone to use when no internet connection (maybe it's there have not came across it at this time). other wise I would give it 5 plus stars. thank you for those who did such nice work. Loving the GEO PDF feature that let's me save customized map sections & email them to my camping companions. Very detailed maps. Just slow & a little clunky with delayed responses. It'd be great to include BML. App has so many possibilities with further integration of data and community engagement. With smarter mobile development and integration of the outdoor recreation community, this app will fulfill so much of its potential.
A bit slow but that's because it's loading full detailed topo maps!!! Awesome! Can't wait for the capability to use off-line. In the meantime, it's great for planning ahead and saving GEO PDFs.
Hugely improved. Offline maps fail to update, update button does nothing (it seems). Navigation is smoother but it doesn't remember my overlay selection (wildfires). I have no idea what the Trail Heads marker does. Improving! Reviewed 9/10/2020
This app is garbage. Doesn't show where anything is just an outline of the whole forest with one campsite symbol in an area where 100 sites surround a lake. Doesnt show trail heads doesnt show trails doesnt show amenities. Doesnt show park buildings or facilities.
Looks like it would have a ton of content but because of that, it takes too long to load the content. Why try to load content for the whole US at once? Why not break it up into different forests and say "40 points of interest in Cherokee" "30 points of interest in Pisgah" etc etc, THEN when you zoom in load the content...
UPDATE: Appears to be working like it should again. Thank you! I've used this app for several years now and loved it. Since the last update i keep receiving an error saying Cannot load Activity and cannot load details. Might be an android compatibility issue?
This app would be a lot better if there was a switch in the settings to lock it in to offline maps mode even when there is a network connection. It's super slow when loading otherwise.
Tried to use this app several times. All I would get when trying to load a map or check for lodging was an error message. Nothing in the app worked and my phone is only 3 months old.
EDIT: changed rating to 5*, not crashing anymore. Great amount of detail included in these maps, and I trust it'll be updated regularly by the USFS. Super useful.
Sems like it has potential, but it had serious stability issues. It's crashed several times and sometimes won't finish loading at startup.
Garbage! Why allow the capability to download "offline" maps, if your unable to even access them when you have no service?! Waste of phone space! 😒 a lot of features will not load even when connected also. Needs some serious updates!
Great resource if you download maps ahead of time. A bit slow, new airplane mode seems to help a lot when in the woods w/o connection.
This app is in it's infant stages. it doesn't work well and you have no clue where you are looking and the search is near useless. I will go buy a real map that knows the difference between private and public lands.
Excellent tool. I love that you can select what you are interested in and download a whole national forest to view with gps while you are outside of data connection.
Noooo. Don't say that this app is no longer? It doesn't load up all the POIs. I tried on the desktop version and it says to go to a regular map. I hope this is just a temporary blip 🥲
Figures. I'm based at a NWR near a National Forest. I'm actually not too surprised how crappy of an app the Forest Circus has put out. You seriously need to scrap it and start from scratch. There's far too many problems with the app to even point out. Forest Circus: If someone in your IT department coded this app, you need to fire them and hire a real programmer. Yes it IS that bad.
Great tool for finding National Forest lands. Works well on my Pixel 3. Offline mode will be helpful, but this is an encouraging start to the app!
Wow what a great tool. Tons of National Forest information that is just not available elsewhere. The app takes some time to learn all of the features and how to access them.
This app really needs ability to set Waypoints. It's a real hassle to find a road or other point of interest to click on for status
Very helpful when in the mountains. I love having different options you can choose from depending on what you are doing in the wilderness.
seems like a good app but it only has specific trails. I live in the Pennsylvania poconos and was hoping for some trail maps around here but found nothing.
This app use too work but now I get a "Map Service Error" when I start the app. I uninstalled it, did a power off restart and reinstall and get the same error. It will install the basemap but that is only good to get you to the state level. I cannot down load other forest maps. I get a dialog box but cannot type in any text to search. I gave it two stars because it use to work pretty good. It does not work at all now. Wort a try if it works for you.
