Living abroad, I'd used this app daily for the last 18 months and it's genuinely the best app going for English-French translations. However, they recently introduced 3/4 screen adverts without a close button which forces you to close and reopen the app in order to use it. I love your app, just please keep it functional, go back to the banner at the bottom
Been using the WordReference website for many years—it's been my favorite translation resource. When I found the app, I knew I would find the same functionality & quality in it. One of my favorite features is the ability to click on any word within a definition & immediately view a translation of that word—it makes an understanding of what you're reading instantaneous. If only I'd had access to such an app in college, when I was grappling with those tedious passages of Proust!
Great references to understand how the same word can have a different meaning within context. The examples are usually clear. I would love to find a reference specific to one language only though and WR only works between the 2 different languages selected. I haven't tried the forum yet, but may upgrade to it if I go premium.
1. User can search the wordreference site, but cannot "find in page," as he could with the website version via browser. 2. Has a "back" button, but not a "forward" button. 3. English-only forum topics are mixed in with the Spanish, making it hard to find what you need. Same problem on website. 4. NICE DARK THEME
Edit May 5, 2022 still not working on only my Chromebook Pixel 2 after many months. I just updated app but sadly no change; loads ok but gives no results, blank page, no message. Works ok on Pixelbook and Android phone. I sure wish it would work. Can I open app and have it link directly to the webpage so I have something? What do I need to do to make this happen?
I use this app since already few years: very useful and accurate for English. Although now I live in France and unfortunately French has a very limited language choice to translate to. Shame
I found out the most amazing of app when it comes to dictionaries. The only blackout is when you don't have any internet connection so you cannot use the app offline.
It has been extremely useful to be able to find the meaning and translation of practically every word, every single time. It has been also a great experience to find the experts opinions on the use of certain words within a certain context. I'm very grateful to being able to use this great App!!
I'm liking both the platform per se and the app a ton, though I would really appreciate the possibility to sort my favourite terms with regards to their respective translation language combination, as well as being able to assign them to customizable sub collections
It would be great if you add the ability to categorize words in your app. And could you fix "the see in context" part because there is something wrong with this. net::ERR_CLEARTEXT_NOT_PERMITTED
Great app! I use the pro version all the time. It would be even better if it was occasionally updated to provide added functionality eg ability to create vocab lists.
I use this app on a daily basis, the dictionary of french/English is expansive and very thorough. The app does seem like it would benefit from an upgrade to its ui, as I feel like some buttons in the options /sidebar are useless or unresponsive, I would also like to see some features added to the app such as an offline feature, I'd pay a subscription for this feature.
The most useful app for improving another non-native language
The website itself is great but the app is buggy. It will often randomly switch from the dictionary to the conjugator when a search is input. Just as often, it will stop recognising any searches you put in at all, so you have to restart the app. I've had this app on 4 devices so far and have had the same problems on all. nonetheless, it remains more convenient than loading up the website.
THE best translator for individual words, and even useful for finding new phrases and idioms. Every translation and it's use is listed. It makes it so much easier not just to find the translations, but to work out which translation to use in which situation. It's an essential for anyone learning a language, and is much much more reliable than just typing individual words into Google Translate.
It is one of the best dictionaries out there, however the app has several disturbing issues. The most annoying one is when you look up a word and it takes you to the conjugation page or the English definition page. And it happens quite often. If you correct this, I'll certainly give it more than 2 stars. Thank you!
This app is so awesome, it's much better than Google Translate 😃 However, there's a bug affecting the pronunciation change... For example, if I select US or any other dialect, well, it does always default to UK-RP... While this is just a minor annoyance, it's still bothersome having to change it every time... So, could you please add a default language selector (in the settings)?
Best dictionary app ever made. The best features are the audio with different pronunciation accents and the words in context, like in phrasal verbs, common expressions. As an ESL teacher I love it, because WR helps my students so much with that. It's easy to say or get something wrong if you don't know the other possible meanings a word can have, and WR solves that problem. The only thing I'd like to ask is, please add other languages too! I'm learning Catalan and the other apps are terrible🧡
The app generally speaking does a good job at translating words, but I have come across more than once with words that are not included in this dictionary. The app is also not very user friendly in the sense that if you are translating from one language to another and then you want to find a synonym, when you want to go back to translation, the app does not make it simple to go back, is not intuitive.
Good but not always easy to use. The dictionaries and the content is thorough and the examples are good however it is really easy to lose your place and not be able to find the dictionary you were in again without digging into the menu and clicking three or 4 times to get just back to the basic translation dictionary. That is just an unnecessary hassle and annoyance, also they don't respond to emails...
I love word reference and used to really appreciate this app but in recent months it has just got really buggy. I gave 3 stars, would have been 5, but for the fact it just keeps stopping working nowadays. You will type something in the search bar, press search ....and then nothing. No response from word reference, just the WR screen. Tried force stopping, nothing. Reinstalling seems to be the only thing to work. I hope they fix this. For now, I have to use the browser version.
As a Spanish teacher, I have found WR to be an invaluable resource for myself; consequently, it is the #1 go-to for my students. Not only do the dictionaries contain a wide variety of contextual nuances for words in different situations, but the forums allow clarification with native speakers throughout the Spanish-speaking world. For a language nerd, both enlightening and at times entertaining.
Brilliant app! Personally giving it 4 stars because it does not have verb conjugations for German, the language that I am learning. Also, you can expand your vocabulary range by including translations of phrases or idioms containing more than one word. It's not like they are not there, but it can be made more convenient for one to find them. Otherwise a really useful app.
I love the app and the ability to quickly translate words within another app is neat. However, I was wondering if there was an option to set a default language. I only use the app for french to english translations but when I highlight a french word in another app it opens up the english dictionary and I have to manually switch to the French-to-English translator. If there was an option to set a default language that would be great. But other than that the app is great :)))
I've been using this for years and wouldn't go anywhere without it. Also, it interacts very well with my phone and searching for unknown words couldn't be easier. Recommended
Essential app for language learners and anyone who communicates in a language that is not their native tongue. Multiple dictionaries, extensive definitions, conjugation tables, access to the forum, useful features like being able to save searches. The app is mostly reliable and fast compared to the website. Has been my go-to translation dictionary for years.
When you type, adverts pop up where the keyboard on your screen is. They only flash momentarily, but if you are typing fast, and who doesn't. You'll either end up clicking the ad or if the ad disappears but before your keyboard reappears, you'll end up clicking elsewhere on the page, either zooming in or going to another word. I am absolute sick of this. Just use the website instead of this awful app.
The word reference dictionary itself is 5 stars. It has no equal as far as I've seen. The app leaves some room for want. First of all, would love to be able to download a dictionary and have it available offline, this alone would probably bring it to 4.5 stars (currently have to use linguee for this). The only other problem is the occasional bugginess switching between the translator and the conjugator, not a huge deal, but annoying. Would also like to see a french definition dictionary.
Great except for the inexplicable position of the favourite button in the search field (only sometimes) meaning I for one constantly click it when I want to clear the field. Very annoying. Also the app seems to choose the wrong dictionary frequently. For example it chooses conjugation even though this isn't in my favourites and I have never used it.
